'''The Subspace Emissary''' (Japanese: '''亜空の使者''' ''The Subspace Emissary'') is a single-player game that is contained within [[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]].  It is a side-scrolling action game with a storyline that is said to emphasize character development. Most of the playable characters are protagonists, including {{p|Pikachu}}, [[Red (game)|Pokémon Trainer]] and {{p|Lucario}}. {{p|Jigglypuff}} is also playable, but only after beating the Subspace Emissary.

The characters form teams based on the developments of the story. [[Masahiro Sakurai]] has stated that most hidden characters are unlocked by simply playing through The Subspace Emissary and, indeed, Lucario is unlocked in this fashion. A second player can join at any time, though the camera will focus on player one.

In order to obtain trophies of the enemies in this game, the player must throw a Trophy Stand at them. This acts just like a [[Poké Ball]] as it 'captures' the opponent when they are at low health. It also works against bosses, such as {{p|Rayquaza}}.

==Plot==

Led by a being known as the {{sbw|Ancient Minister}}, the {{sbw|Subspace Army}}'s plan is to cut apart the world and carry it into {{sbw|Subspace}}. This is achieved by two {{sbw|Robotic Operating Buddy|R.O.B}}s detonating a {{sbw|Subspace Bomb}} and the minions known as {{sbw|Primids}}, which are created from {{sbw|Shadow Bugs}} from {{sbw|Mr. Game & Watch}}, attacking anyone who resists. Now everyone must team up to stop this threat. After finding the Ancient Minister, who turns out to be a {{sbw|R.O.B. (SSBB)|R.O.B.}} in disguise, all the Subspace Bombs in the factory detonate, creating a portal into Subspace from which {{zw|Ganondorf}} and {{smw|Bowser}} emerge on a giant battleship. The characters of Super Smash Bros. Brawl team up and enter Subspace, where they see {{sbw|Master Hand}} chained by what appear to be chains made of light. Master Hand crashes to the ground just as a mysterious being known as {{sbw|Tabuu}} emerges. Tabuu attacks with his wings, turning all the characters into {{sbw|Trophy|trophies}}. {{wk|Kirby}} awakens due to the effects of the badge he earlier spotted lying on the ground, dropped by {{wk|King Dedede}}. He then proceeds to pick up the trophies of other characters. The player then goes through {{sbw|the Great Maze}}, a mashed up version of the real world that Tabuu has made in Subspace. When the player finds all the characters and fight their Subspace versions, the door to Tabuu is unlocked. Once again, the characters confront Tabuu. He is about to turn them into trophies with his wings again, when {{sbw|Sonic the Hedgehog|Sonic}} shows up, tearing through Tabuu's wings, rendering them useless. He is also unlocked for use against Tabuu. Once the player defeats Tabuu, the credits roll and afterwards {{sbw|All-Star Mode}} can be unlocked; provided that {{sbw|Classic Mode|Classic mode}} has been beaten as well. 

==={{p|Rayquaza}}===
Separated from {{dk|Donkey Kong}}, {{dk|Diddy Kong}} sees an {{lw|Arwing}} get shot down by a blast from a nearby lake. Upon reaching the lake, {{sbw|Rayquaza}} emerges from the water and captures Diddy Kong, but {{lw|Fox McCloud|Fox}} jumps out of the ship and makes a dramatic rescue. Rayquaza then attacks Fox with a ball of energy, but Fox reflects it back at Rayquaza. Fox and Diddy Kong then fight Rayquaza.

Along with the other bosses in the game, Rayquaza is fought again in the final stage, The Great Maze.
Upon completing The Subspace Emissary, Rayquaza can then be challenged in the Boss Battle mode, alongside the other bosses.

==={{p|Pikachu}}===
While searching for her stolen {{met|power suit}} in {{sbw|The Research Facility|the research facility}}, {{met|Zero Suit Samus}} discovers {{sbw|Pikachu}}, whose electricity is being harnessed for the facility's power in a capsule-like machine. Seeing the pain it causes to Pikachu, Samus uses her Paralyzer Whip to free it, sounding an alarm. Pikachu and Samus travel together throughout the facility and {{sbw|The Subspace Bomb Factory|the Bomb Factory}}.

===[[Red (game)|Pokémon Trainer]]===
{{wb|Lucas}} bumps into the {{sbw|Pokémon Trainer}} at {{sbw|The Ruined Zoo}}. They decide to team up to help rescue {{wb|Ness}} from {{smw|Wario}} and help Pokémon Trainer capture {{p|Ivysaur}} and {{p|Charizard}}. The two travel together throughout most of the game.

He starts out with only {{sbw|Squirtle}}, and later captures {{sbw|Ivysaur}} and {{sbw|Charizard}} at {{sbw|The Ruins}}.

==={{p|Lucario}}===
At the top of a snowy mountain, {{wk|Meta Knight}} and the {{sbw|Ice Climbers}} encounter a meditating {{sbw|Lucario}}. After a fight that unlocks Lucario, it helps Meta Knight in his mission to recover his stolen battleship {{wk|Halberd}} from a hoard of Mr. Game & Watches. 

It later uses its [[aura]] to detect {{sbw|Solid Snake|Snake}} hiding in a box and an approaching enemy threat. Lucario then assists the characters in fighting {{sbw|Duon}}.

==={{p|Jigglypuff}}===
After beating the Subspace Emissary, the player can return to {{sbw|the swamp}} and locate a door that did not exist before. Upon entering the door, a cinematic shows Jigglypuff {{m|sing}}ing at {{OBP|Pokémon Stadium|stage}}. The player then fights Jigglypuff. If the player succeeds, Jigglypuff joins the team. Other than this, Jigglypuff doesn't have a significant role in the story.
