An object like a Poké Ball or an official battle can confirm that a certain Pokémon belongs to a certain trainer. Ash’s Pikachu doesn’t like to be in its Poké Ball too, but the Poké ball was at least seen in the anime. Ash’s Squirtle was caught off-screen too, but during battles, it’s Poké Ball was shown.
