Route 16

Route 16

There isn't much going on around Route 16, but a new Pokémon species prowls around here. The Fire-type Slugma are natives to the Johto region, but seem to prefer living in Kanto. The Cycling Road starts not far from here, and leads you right to Fuchsia City in the south.

Route 17

Route 17

Route 17 is the Cycling Road itself, connecting Route 16 in the north with Route 18 in the south. There are only a few Trainers around, but you can catch Slugma and Muk in the patch of grass on the north end.

Cruise your way down the hill, and head east to Route 18.

Defeat a few Trainers, and head east to reach Fuchsia City.

Fuchsia City

Fuchsia City

Fuchsia City, home of the former Safari Zone. Unfortunately, the Safari Zone Warden has left on vacation, forcing the safari to shut down. The zoo exhibits have fallen into disrepair, and the exotic Pokémon have wandered into the surrounding routes.

With the main attraction out of commission, set your sights on the city's other big venue — the Fuchsia Gym.

LEADER: JANINE
The Poisonous
Ninja Master

The Fuchsia Gym is the same ninja training ground that it always has been, complete with invisible walls. However, Koga's promotion to the Elite Four left a vacant Gym Leader position - a title now held by his daughter, Janine. Janine and her recruits are adept at disguise, dressing similarly to conceal the Gym Leader's true location. Like always, Poison-types rule the Fuchsia Gym, so Psychic- and Ground-type attacks are the best offense. Water- and Fire-type will also be useful against her Gym Trainers. As for Janine, blast her team with a few psychic attacks, and scorch her Ariados and Venomoth if needed.

The Soul Badge

After her defeat, Janine hands over the Soul Badge, which slightly raises your party's defenses. She also gives you TM06 (Toxic) as a prize.

The southern waterway to Cinnabar Island is blocked off by boulders, having been left here from Cinnabar's volcanic eruption. Turn east to Route 15.
