Flint's Infernape (Japanese: オーバのゴウカザル Ōba's Goukazaru) is the only known Pokémon owned by Flint in the anime. It is also one of the Pokémon he uses in the games, being his main one in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

History

As a Chimchar

Flint first obtained this Infernape when it was a Chimchar during his childhood. It took on two Trainers who sent out Stunky and Jolteon, where it managed to defeat them. Before long, Flint and Chimchar were known as the strongest Trainers in all of Sunyshore, winning battle after battle on their way to the top. When Flint first met Volkner, Chimchar then battled his Pikachu and won. During the rematch, it lost, causing a friendly-rivalry between Flint and Volkner. The two Trainers encounter the proprietor and his Houndoom. Chimchar and Flint get knocked by the blast coming from Houndoom, leaving Volkner to continue on his own.

As a Monferno

After that, Chimchar had many battles with Volkner's Pikachu until Flint left the city. Flint trained with Chimchar on his way to becoming a member of the Sinnoh Elite Four, battling various opponents and it evolved into Monferno. Sometime after that, Flint registered his Monferno in the Pokémon League where it was sent out to battle a Trainer's Snorlax. Monferno began with Flamethrower and Snorlax used Whirlwind. Both moves canceled each other out. Monferno then used Mach Punch which Snorlax absorbed easily. Afterwards, Snorlax used Body Slam which successfully made contact with Monferno. However, the rest of the battle wasn't shown. Between the league and growing up, Monferno managed to evolve into an Infernape.

Flint and his Infernape

Infernape made its first non-flashback appearance where it saved Ash from Volkner's machines when it grabbed Ash as he refused to take the free Badge as Volkner was giving them out for free due to his loss in passion of battling. Later, it was sent out to battle Ash. It took on his Buizel as its first opponent. Buizel started with Aqua Jet in which Infernape dodged. Infernape used its fists to block Buizel's attack when he used Ice Punch, getting them frozen in the process. When Buizel used SonicBoom, Infernape negated the attack using the ice on its fist. Infernape won when it clashed with Buizel's Aqua Jet using Flare Blitz despite the type-disadvantage. Infernape next opponent was none other than Infernape. Ash's Infernape started things off with Flame Wheel which Flint's evades. Both Infernape fought extremely hard but in the end, Flint's emerged victorious. Infernape's last opponent was Pikachu. Unlike the last two, Pikachu was a hard to beat opponent. During the battle, it sparked a flashback of the time Volkner battled with his Pikachu. After a long battle, Infernape managed to defeat Pikachu, winning the battle for Flint.

In Four Roads Diverged in a Pokémon Port!, Infernape came to the rescue when Team Rocket robbed Kenny's Floatzel. Infernape stopped them by using Overheat and sent them blasting off. Afterwards, it had a battle with Jasmine's Steelix. Due to the type-advantage, Infernape managed to defeat Steelix.

Infernape also appeared alongside Flint during the credits of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

In Memories are Made of Bliss! Infernape was seen battling against Cynthia's Garchomp on TV. Despite a very harsh battle, Infernape could not beat Garchomp, and was knocked out by the Mach Pokémon's Dragon Rush.

Personality and characteristics

Infernape is considered to be quite a humdinger, as it is very well-trained and powerful. This strength was first shown when it was still a Chimchar where it took out a Stunky and Jolteon singlehandedly. The same also applies to Flint's battle with Ash when it easily took out all three of his Pokémon. Infernape is also highly persistent, fighting to the very end with Garchomp in Flint's battle with Cynthia even after having been previously weakened from defeating two of her other Pokémon.

Infernape is Flint's highest-leveled Pokémon in Diamond and Pearl, and though it isn't in Platinum (that position being given to his Magmortar instead), it is still used in his team when rebattling the Elite Four.

Trivia

• Out of all the Elite Four's Pokémon (excluding anime-considered Champions such as Lance and Cynthia), Infernape is the only one to make more than one physical appearance in the anime.
• Infernape is subject to a continuity error: in Flint Sparks the Fire!, it was shown to still be a Chimchar when Flint is an adult, but is a Monferno in Four Roads Diverged in a Pokémon Port!, where Flint is still a child. It's unknown if Monferno's appearance is a mistake or a retcon to their story.
