Samuel

Samuel (Japanese: ソウタロウ Sōtarō), also known as Sam, is a recurring character who appeared in the Pokémon anime. He is the assistant of Pyramid King Brandon, and he also referees Brandon's matches.

History

Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire

Samuel debuted in Battling the Enemy Within were he refereed the match of Brandon and Ash, who was then possessed by the King of Pokélantis. At one point the king used Samuel as a human shield by forcing Sceptile to hide behind him as Brandon's Regirock was preparing to fire a Hyper Beam at it, but Brandon was able to stop Regirock in time.

Samuel later accompanied Brandon, who was searching for a rare Pokémon at the Fennel Valley ruins. Ash and his friends arrived at Fennel Valley, and Samuel refereed Ash's long-awaited rematch against Brandon in Overjoyed!. After Ash's loss, Brandon continued to search the ruins.

By Pinch Healing, Samuel confirmed that Brandon had finally located the rare Pokémon, allowing for Ash to have another chance at the Brave Symbol. In Gathering the Gang of Four and Pace - The Final Frontier!, Samuel refereed the battle between Brandon and Ash. Samuel almost awarded the victory to Brandon after Pikachu was frozen by one of Regice's attacks. However, Pikachu was able to break free and win the match, earning Ash his final Symbol and a place in the Battle Frontier Hall of Fame.

Character

Samuel is a reliable individual, often running errands on behalf of his boss Pyramid King Brandon. When refereeing, Samuel is particularly stern as he observes Brandon's matches, and he is quick to make his ruling judgments.
