Ash's Heracross (Japanese: サトシのヘラクロス Satoshi's Heracros) was the first Pokémon Ash captured during his travels through Johto. Its voice actor in both Japanese and English is Katsuyuki Konishi.

It first appeared in A Sappy Ending. In that episode, several Heracross and Pinsir were having a territorial dispute. One of the Heracross followed Ash and his friends as they tried to figure out a solution to the problem. Eventually, Ash captured the Heracross.

Heracross was good in battle, once defeating a powerful Scizor, but it often got distracted by tree sap. It also would try licking the sap from Bulbasaur's bulb whenever the two were called out at the same time, much to the Pokémon's chagrin.

Heracross didn't stay on Ash's team for very long. It was sent to Professor Oak's lab in Tricks of the Trade in exchange for one of Ash's Tauros. Ash sent Tauros back in the following episode, but Professor Oak informed Ash that he wanted to study Heracross's behavior.

In the Johto League Silver Conference, Ash used it against Gary's Magmar and his Blastoise. Heracross defeated Magmar despite the type disadvantage, but lost to Blastoise after one quick launch of its Hydro Pump. After Ash returned from Johto, he left Heracross in Professor Oak's Lab, but he temporally brought it back to his team for his battle with Spenser during the Battle Frontier saga.

Trivia

  • The shape of its horn would suggest that Heracross is male, although prior to Generation IV all Heracross had horns shaped like this. A similar issue surrounds Ash's Pikachu.
  • Heracross is the 20th Pokémon species Ash has owned, counting Haunter and Raticate.
  • Heracross is Ash's second Template:Type2 Pokémon, the first being Primeape. However, Heracross is Bug/Fighting, not pure Fighting as Primeape was.
