Bastiodon (Japanese: トリデプス Torideps) is a dual-type Rock/Steel Fossil Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It evolves from Shieldon starting at level 30, after it is revived from an Armor Fossil.

Biology

Bastiodon is a Pokémon which appears to be a cross between a ceratopsian such as Chasmosaurus and a bulldozer. Its dark gray, square head resembles a castle wall, complete with four cream-yellow, window-like spots with a black outline, three dark gray spikes on the top, and two larger gray spikes in the upper corners. Bastiodon's triangular nose extends from the middle of its shield-like head down over its lips and appears to be pierced by a gray, horizontal spike. Four spikes jut downward and four large, blunt tusks protrude upward from its dark gray lower jaw. Bastiodon's cream-yellow eyes are partially obscured by the nasal spike and spaced-out tusks. Its thick, cream-yellow body is further protected by a gray ridge and dark gray plates on its back, jagged growths on its legs, and a plated tail.

It is from roughly 100 million years ago. Despite its rough, intimidating appearance, Bastiodon is a docile, caring Pokémon that feeds on grass and Berries. Its shield-like face is as tough as diamond, and capable of repelling any attack. When multiple Bastiodon line up side by side, their faces form a wall that nothing can break through; this was how they protected their young. In stark contrast to its impenetrable frontal defense, it is helpless when attacked from behind. It seems to have lived in the same habitats as Rampardos, as evidenced by their fossils often being found together. Because its facial bones are so hard, they were initially mistaken for its spine by researchers who found its fossils.

Byron's Bastiodon

Bastiodon debuted in Ancient Family Matters!, under the ownership of Byron. It was used to battle Roark's Rampardos, but the battle was interrupted by Team Rocket before an outcome could be determined. In Dealing With Defensive Types!, it was used in a Gym battle against Ash. It battled Chimchar and managed to defeat it, but it then lost to Gliscor.

In High-tailing It from Haunter, Diamond's Shieldon, nicknamed "Don", evolved into a Bastiodon fighting several opponents at the Galactic Veilstone Building. Already a sturdy Pokémon before evolving, this solidified his strong defenses even more.

Like in the games, Bastiodon appears alongside Byron. He used it during his training sessions with Hareta in Challenge! The Fortress Of Steel!!.

Origin

Bastiodon is likely based on a ceratopsian dinosaur. Its protective growth resembles a castle wall or fortress. Its head resembles that of Chasmosaurus. The spike through its nose is reminiscent of the nose bones from various indigenous tribes. It also appears to be based on the ultimate shield/immovable object, as opposed to its counterpart, Rampardos, which appears to be based on the ultimate spear/unstoppable force.

Name origin

Bastiodon may be a combination of bastion and -don (common suffix in dinosaur names derived from the Ancient Greek word for tooth). It may also allude to the Bastille, a French fortress that was built in the 14th century.

Torideps may be a combination of 砦 toride (fortress) and Triceratops or -ops (common suffix in dinosaur names derived from the Ancient Greek word for face).
