Growl (Japanese: なきごえ Cry) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation I.

Effect

Growl decreases the Attack stat of all adjacent opponents by one stage.

Growl is a sound-based move.

Pokémon are immune to having their Attack decreased if they have any of the following Abilities: Hyper Cutter, Clear Body, White Smoke, or Full Metal Body. Additionally, Pokémon with Soundproof are immune to Growl due to it being a sound-based move.

If powered up by a Normalium Z into Z-Growl, the user's Defense stat rises by one stage, and the user can use this move regardless of whether it was affected by Throat Chop or not.

Growl can be used as the second move of a Pokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 2 bonus appeal points if Charm was used in the previous turn.

Generations I-II

Growl cannot affect a Pokémon behind a substitute.

In the Generation I and II core series games, when an in-game opponent outside of the Battle Tower uses Growl, the move has a 25% chance to fail.

Generations III-V

Growl no longer has an additional chance to fail when used by an in-game opponent.

Generation VI onwards

Growl can now hit Pokémon even if they are behind a substitute.
