Splash (Japanese: はねる Hop) is a non-damaging Normal move introduced in Generation I. Prior to Generation II, it was the signature move of Magikarp.

Effect
Effect
Splash has no effect whatsoever. It simply displays a dipping animation and a text message informing the player that nothing happened.
Splash cannot be used when Gravity is in effect. If the user has no other usable moves besides Splash when Gravity is in effect, it will use Struggle.
If powered up by a Normalium Z into Z-Splash, the user's Attack stat rises by three stages.
Generation I
Generation I
The message "No effect!" will appear on the screen following the move's animation.  The move has no effect whatsoever.
Splash's message is "No effect!".

Generation II
Splash's message was changed to "But nothing happened."

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon
Generation III onwards
The user will move to a different tile one ratio away. The user will inflict damage if the move comes in contact with another Pokémon.
Splash's message was changed to "But nothing happened!"

Generation II and on
Generation VIII
Same as above, except the message now reads "But nothing happened!"

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series
In the Rescue Team, Explorers, and Adventure Squad series, Splash causes the user move to a random adjacent tile, possibly cutting a corner. If the user comes into contact with another Pokémon, both Pokémon receive 5 HP damage and the user returns to the tile it used the move from.

Generation II
In Gates to Infinity, the move has no effect whatsoever.

Trivia
Trivia
* Splash is the only move that has been introduced that does nothing to either the opponent or the user. In Mystery Dungeon, however, Splash will deal 5 damage to both any foe in the way of the attack and the user.
* While its English name (coupled with its Generation IV and Generation V animation) suggests an association with water, its Japanese name, はねる haneru, can mean both splash and hop, but usually the latter. This explains why the move can be learned by Pokémon such as Spoink and Hoppip—species who have no association with water but are known for hopping or jumping—and why it is disabled by Gravity. Nob Ogasawara, the translator for Red and Blue, was aware of the mistranslation and suggested the name "Flop" instead, but was overruled by higher-ups.
* Splash was originally the signature move of Magikarp, but since Generation II, other Pokémon have been able to learn it.
* In the anime, Splash is the most common result of Metronome.
* Every Pokémon that can learn Splash by leveling up learns it as a starting move.
* Splash and the event-exclusive moves Celebrate and Hold Hands are the only moves in the core series Pokémon games that have no effect whatsoever.
* While the English name suggests an association with water, the Japanese name, はねる (haneru), can mean both "splash" and "hop" (although usually the latter). This explains why the move can be learned naturally by Pokémon such as Spoink and Hoppip, species who have no association with water but are known for hopping or jumping and why Gravity disables it. The translation as "Splash" was likely due to the fact that it was only available to Magikarp when it was introduced.
* Splash is the only obtainable move in Pokémon GO to have a different type than in the core series games.
**This could also explain why Splash is not Water, as well.

Splash (Japanese: はねる Hop) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation I. Prior to Generation II, it was the signature move of Magikarp.

Splash's message is "No effect!".

Generation II

Splash's message was changed to "But nothing happened."

Generation III onwards

Splash's message was changed to "But nothing happened!"

Generation VIII

Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

In the Rescue Team, Explorers, and Adventure Squad series, Splash causes the user move to a random adjacent tile, possibly cutting a corner. If the user comes into contact with another Pokémon, both Pokémon receive 5 HP damage and the user returns to the tile it used the move from.

In Gates to Infinity, the move has no effect whatsoever.

In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, the users jumps over Pokémon or group of Pokémon directly in front of it (jumping over three tiles at maximum), moving to the tile on the other side of the Pokémon. When used by a Gigantic Pokémon, the move has no effect whatsoever.

Trivia

 • While its English name (coupled with its Generation IV and Generation V animation) suggests an association with water, its Japanese name, はねる haneru, can mean both splash and hop, but usually the latter. This explains why the move can be learned by Pokémon such as Spoink and Hoppip—species who have no association with water but are known for hopping or jumping—and why it is disabled by Gravity. Nob Ogasawara, the translator for Pokémon Red and Blue, was aware of the mistranslation and suggested the name "Flop" instead, but was overruled by higher-ups.[1]
 • In the anime, Splash is the most common result of Metronome.
 • Splash and the event-exclusive moves Celebrate and Hold Hands are the only moves in the core series Pokémon games that have no effect whatsoever.
 • Splash is the only obtainable move in Pokémon GO to have a different type than in the core series games.
