I don't think how many cities you travel through really matters. I mean you have to travel a city over to get the Kalos starters to begin with. And after that, there is only one city and a badge between you and them. As for those examples you gave, those are well into post game, whereas these are received well before mid game. In fact if I remember that the game developers even stated you get the Kanto starters at the beginning of the game as well during some interview or another. That was one of the biggest hypes for the games, before Mega Charizard X or Y was revealed. Up until then only Lucario, Blaziken, Mewtwo, Aphrous and I think Mawile were known to Mega evolve. Receiving these guys in XY is different from past game where you had to beat the E4 before having a crack at getting other starters from other gens.
It use to be a starter was any Pokémon received from the region's prof...Sycamore is the Kalos region' prof, and he gives out one of three Pokémon before most of the game's story ever takes place. He sends you off with them, not to just fill your Pokédex but also research mega evolution which they all can achieve. Sycamore starts you off on your Mega Evolution quest with the Kanto starters. :They're still not the starting (i.e. first) Pokémon the player is capable of receiving, so they are quite literally not starter Pokémon in XY. I still think they should be treated as any other gift Pokémon (the ones I already mentioned, as well as, for example, Togepi in GSC/HGSS, Riolu in DPPt, Larvesta in BW, etc): not mentioned in the lede. To mention them gives them undue importance, since gift Pokémon are otherwise never mentioned in their ledes. Any chance it could be based on the [http://allaboutdragons.com/dragons/Evren Evren], a Turkish dragon with a flaming tail? That's a pretty iconic feature to have. Even though Charmander's probably not based on the Evren, it's at least similar. --[[User:IWannaBeTheVeryBest|The]]Very[[User talk:IWannaBeTheVeryBest|Best]] 23:30, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Metal Claw

The charmander in Fire red and Leaf green was capable of learning Metal Claw by level. It hasn't been able to do this in any other game. While I realise this was most likely done to make the battle against Brock a bit less hopeless. It also somewhat implies that that particular Charmander was bred by Prof. Oak from a female member of the Charmander family, and a male of the Aron one. XD As this is pretty much the only way they still can learn Metal Claw at all. --Flameblight 11:46, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
