Whoa! Wh-wh-whoa...!

Are... Are you OK?!

No! Don't let go!

Just a little longer... Come on! Hang on!

N-n-no! I can't... hold on...!

Waaaaaaaaaaah!

Those are the opening words of Explorers of Sky, followed by a short scene of a thunderstorm over an ocean. The lightning strikes and a craggy cliff in the shape of a Sharpedo is briefly visible.

Beach

...Where am I?

...I can't... Drifting off...

Your character wakes up briefly before passing out again.

Meeting

The scene cuts to your partner Pokémon in front of a Wigglytuff tent as they pace back and forth and talk to themself in an attempt to work up the courage to enter, but they are startled when a voice below the grate they step onto identifies them and they quickly hop away, lamenting their lack of courage. They sit down their personal treasure, a stone with a strange pattern on it, and wish they could have been braver before leaving for the beach. A Koffing and Zubat come into the scene as they leave and decide to chase down your partner for their treasure.

At the beach Krabby are blowing bubbles along the shoreline and your partner watches in awe, stating that they always come here when they're feeling down. This is when they turn and notice you collapsed on the sand. You wake, dazed and confused with only the memory of your name and the notion that you used to be human. Your partner thinks you're tricking them at first and tells you about all the bad Pokémon that have been appearing recently. Koffing and Zubat come down the beach and knock down your partner, shaking their precious treasure loose before taking it for themselves. They verbally harass your partner and call them scared before leaving with the treasure.

Your partner decides to be brave and go after them, but not before asking for your help, so the two of you follow them into the Beach Cave.

Beach Cave

To retrieve your partners precious treasure you must clear this 5-floored dungeon. Pokémon in this dungeon are not recruitable and the party can only carry one item at a time for now. Items can be picked up by walking over them. To attack, press A to use a weak attack with infinite PP or open Moves in the menu and select an attack. Progressing to the next floor requires you to walk on the stairs and choose to proceed. Stairs are shown on the map as an outline of a blue square. Your partner can employ different stratgies to help you by selecting different IQ skills under the "Team" option in the menu. More skills can be unlocked by increasing your partners IQ with consumable items called Gummi.

On the 5th floor you will find Koffing and Zubat staring out across the water. Your partner demands their treasure back but upon calling it a treasure, Koffing and Zubat and discuss selling it for a good price before challenging your partner to try to take it, which starts the battle. Upon being defeated, Koffing and Zubat drop the treasure and fly off. Your partner calls the treasure a Relic Fragment and thanks you for helping them get it back.

Back at the beach

When you return to the beach your partner thanks you again before bringing out the Relic Fragment and telling you about their interest in lore and undiscovered lands with a sparkle in their eye. They think the strange pattern on their treasure must be significant and say they want to join an exploration team to find out what it leads to. They recounter their earlier failure to join before asking you to go with them and form a team. Should you agree, the true story begins and the Logo is shown.
