Rain Dance (Japanese: あまごい Rain Prayer) is a non-damaging Water move introduced in Generation II.

It is:
* TM18 from Generation II to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
* TM33 in Sword and Shield.
* TM050 in Generation IX.

Effect
Effect
Generation II-III
Generation II
When this move is used, a rainfall will start on the field which will last for five turns. This clears any other weather effect.
When this move is used, a rainfall will start on the field which will last for five turns. This clears any other weather and it's possible to use it even if it is already raining.

While Rain Dance is in effect, the base damage of Water moves will be increased by 50%, whereas the base damage of Solar Beam and Fire moves will be decreased by 50%. Additionally, Synthesis, Morning Sun, and Moonlight will recover only half as much HP as under clear conditions. Thunder ignores accuracy and evasion under the effect of Rain Dance.

Generation III to VIII
If a Damp Rock is held when Rain Dance is used, the duration of rainfall is lengthened from 5 to 8 turns. Rain Dance will fail if it's already raining. Hurricane ignores accuracy and evasion under the effect of Rain Dance. In Diamond and Pearl only, the move Thunder has a 30% chance of bypassing Protect and Detect under Rain Dance.

A Pokémon with Rain Dish will restore 1/16 its maximum HP to itself after every turn, with Swift Swim will be twice as Speed in the rain, with the Dry Skin Ability will regain ⅛ of their maximum HP at the end of each turn, and with Hydration will have their existing status conditions cured at the end of each turn. Moonlight, Synthesis and Morning Sun only restore ¼ of the user's maximum HP.

Additionally, Pokémon with Forecast transform into the Water type and Weather Ball becomes a Water-type move.

While Rain Dance is in effect, the base damage of using Water moves will be increased by 50% and the base damage of using SolarBeam and Fire moves will be decreased by 50%. Also, the moves Synthesis, Morning Sun, and Moonlight will recover only ¼ of the user's maximum HP. Thunder will be 100% accurate under Rain Dance's effect.
Rain Dance can be used as the first move of a Pokémon Contest combination, causing Bubble, Bubble Beam, Clamp, Crabhammer, Dive, Hydro Cannon, Hydro Pump, Muddy Water, Octazooka, Surf, Thunder, Water Gun, Water Pulse, Water Sport, Water Spout, Waterfall, Weather Ball, Whirlpool, and Withdraw to score double the normal appeal if used in the next turn. It is also part of a Contest Spectacular combination, causing certain moves (Hurricane, Soak, Thunder, Water Sport and Weather Ball) to give an extra three appeal points if used in the next turn.

Additionally, Castform and Weather Ball move become Water-type.
Rain called by Rain Dance does not allow Sliggoo to evolve into Goodra.

Generation IV
If heavy rain, extremely harsh sunlight, or strong winds are present, Rain Dance will fail.
If a In-battle effect item is held when Rain Dance is used, the duration of rainfall is lengthened from 5 to 8 turns. Pokémon with the Dry Skin ability will regain ⅛ of their maximum HP at the end of each turn.

In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, the move Thunder has a 30% chance of bypassing Protect and Detect under Rain Dance. This does not happen in any other version of the game.
If powered up by a Waterium Z into Z-Rain Dance, the user's Speed stat is raised by one stage.

Generation V
Generation IX
Hurricane is 100% accurate under Rain Dance.
Rain Dance can no longer override weather in the overworld.

Trivia
* This move was Blastoise's Pokémon Power (as  あまごい / Rain Prayer in Japanese and as Rain Dance in English) in the Base Set of the TCG prior to being introduced in Generation II of the games.
* In Generation II, Rain Dance was the only Water-type move that could be taught via TM.
* In Generation III, Rain Dance starts a Contest combination with 19 possible finishing moves, the most of any combination
* Prior to Generation VIII, Bronzong was the only Pokémon able to learn Rain Dance by leveling up that could not learn any moves or have any Abilities that benefited from rain. This may be related to its Pokédex entries, several of which mention Bronzong's natural power to summon rain clouds. With the addition of Weather Ball to its movepool in Generation VIII, this is no longer the case.
* The original Japanese name of this move is unrelated to dancing, therefore this is not a dance move. As such, Rain Dance is unaffected by Dancer, and Tierno does not request to see a Pokémon with this move in X and Y.
** Even if it were a dance move, it would fail if called via Dancer, as Rain Dance fails if it's already raining.
* Rain Dance is based on amagoi, Shinto prayer and rituals for rain. Its English name comes from the fact that some of its varieties include dance rituals.

Rain Dance (Japanese: あまごい Rain Prayer) is a non-damaging Water-type move introduced in Generation II.

It is:

Effect

Generation II

When this move is used, a rainfall will start on the field which will last for five turns. This clears any other weather and it's possible to use it even if it is already raining.

While Rain Dance is in effect, the base damage of Water-type moves will be increased by 50%, whereas the base damage of Solar Beam and Fire-type moves will be decreased by 50%.

A Pokémon with Rain Dish will restore 1/16 its maximum HP to itself after every turn, with Swift Swim will be twice as fast in the rain, with the Dry Skin Ability will regain ⅛ of their maximum HP at the end of each turn, and with Hydration will have their existing status conditions cured at the end of each turn. Moonlight, Synthesis and Morning Sun only restore ¼ of the user's maximum HP.

Additionally, Pokémon with Forecast transform into the Water type and Weather Ball becomes a Water-type move.

Rain Dance can be used as the first move of a Pokémon Contest combination, causing Bubble, BubbleBeam, Clamp, Crabhammer, Dive, Hydro Cannon, Hydro Pump, Muddy Water, Octazooka, Surf, Thunder, Water Gun, Water Pulse, Water Sport, Water Spout, Waterfall, Weather Ball, Whirlpool, and Withdraw to score double the normal appeal if used in the next turn. It is also part of a Contest Spectacular combination, causing certain moves (Hurricane, Soak, Thunder, Water Sport and Weather Ball) to give an extra three appeal points if used in the next turn.

Rain called by Rain Dance does not allow Sliggoo to evolve into Goodra.

If heavy rain, extremely harsh sunlight, or strong winds are present, Rain Dance will fail.

If powered up by a Waterium Z into Z-Rain Dance, the user's Speed stat is raised by one stage.

Generation IX

Rain Dance can no longer override weather in the overworld.

  • In Generation II, Rain Dance was the only Water-type move that could be taught via TM.
  • In Generation III, Rain Dance starts a Contest combination with 19 possible finishing moves, the most of any combination
  • Prior to Generation VIII, Bronzong was the only Pokémon able to learn Rain Dance by leveling up that could not learn any moves or have any Abilities that benefited from rain. This may be related to its Pokédex entries, several of which mention Bronzong's natural power to summon rain clouds. With the addition of Weather Ball to its movepool in Generation VIII, this is no longer the case.
  • The original Japanese name of this move is unrelated to dancing, therefore this is not a dance move. As such, Rain Dance is unaffected by Dancer, and Tierno does not request to see a Pokémon with this move in Pokémon X and Y.
    • Even if it were a dance move, it would fail if called via Dancer, as Rain Dance fails if it's already raining.
  • Rain Dance is based on amagoi, Shinto prayer and rituals for rain. Its English name comes from the fact that some of its varieties include dance rituals.
