Soft Soil
A soft soil patch can be found on the route's north side. On your first visit, two Berry trees can be found growing here. Collect the fruit and the trees disappear, allowing you to plant another Berry to continue the cycle. The amount of time needed for the new tree to fully mature and produce fruit varies based on the kind of Berry. After obtaining a watering can, you may water the young plants at certain times to increase the Berry yield. Petalburg Gym
Visit the Petalburg Gym and speak to your father, Norman. He is surprised that you have made it this far from home, but is excited for you to become a Pokémon Trainer like him.
A sickly boy named Wally soon enters, and explains that he will be staying with relatives in nearby Verdanturf Town in the hopes that the clean air will do him good. But he is afraid of becoming lonely there, and asks for help in catching a Pokémon to take along. Norman asks that you go with him, and loans the boy his Zigzagoon and a Poké Ball. Wally leads you back to Route 102, where he successfully catches a Ralts.
Back at the Gym, Wally returns Norman's Zigzagoon and thanks the two of you for helping him catch his very own Pokémon. He promises to take good care of it, then hurries off as his mother is waiting for him. Norman then gives you some advice: to become a strong Trainer, challenge Gym Leader Roxanne in Rustboro City before moving on to the other Gym Leaders. Though Norman is also a Gym Leader, he will not accept your challenge until you have earned four other Badges.

Ambush!
In the middle of the woods, you come across a researcher from Devon Corporation, a tech company based in Rustboro City. After explaining that he is looking for a Shroomish, he is suddenly confronted by a member of Team MagmaR/Team AquaS. The Grunt had planned to ambush the worker and steal important documents when he left the woods, but grew too impatient for that. Defeat him in battle and he flees the scene, but not before hinting that his friends are up to something in Rustboro. The grateful researcher gives you a Great Ball as thanks. He then rushes off to Rustboro after realizing what his attacker wanted.
Pretty Petal flower shop
The Pretty Petal flower shop is run by three sisters. The eldest sister, near the entrance, teaches visitors how to grow Berries. The middle sister, near the rear wall, hands out the Wailmer Pail when you first speak to her. The youngest sister, near the front wall, hands out one random Berry from a group of eight possible varieties every day.
