Arcanine (Japanese: ウインディ Windie) is a Fire Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

Biology
It evolves from Growlithe when exposed to a Fire Stone.
Physiology
Arcanine is a canine-like Pokémon that resemble the mythical Chinese Shisa (a cross between a lion and a dog). Its head is covered in a cream colored hair, except for the region around its eyes and ears, which is orange. Its body is covered with a combination of orange fur with black stripes, and the aforementioned cream colored hair. The cream colored hair is on its chest and well as the back of its front legs, along with a portion around its hind legs, and on it's tail. It's paws each have three claws as well as a round pink paw underneath of them.
Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
In Hisui, Arcanine has a dual-type regional form. It evolves from Hisuian Growlithe when exposed to a Fire Stone.
Arcanine can spit large trails of flame, as well as run with ExtremeSpeed.

Behavior
Biology
Wise and loyal, Arcanine are prized Pokémon.
Arcanine is a quadrupedal, canidae Pokémon with an orange pelt marked by jagged black stripes. It has diamond-shaped ears with beige insides, black eyes, a round, black nose, and two pointed teeth protruding from its upper jaw. Its head, muzzle, and chest are covered in shaggy, beige fur, except for two oval sections around each eye and ear. Long tufts of fur grow behind its elbows and around its ankles. Its underside is black, and it has a billowing, beige tail that is bent in the middle. Each paw has three toes and a round, pink pad.
Habitat
Arcanine live in active volcanoes, grassy plains, and scorched fields heated by geothermal energy.

Diet
Arcanine is a fiercely brave and loyal Pokémon. It is capable of running 6,200 miles in 24 hours with a speed and grace reminiscent of flight. In Generation II, Extreme Speed was its signature move. Arcanine has long been admired for its beauty and speed, and anyone who hears its bark will grovel before it. The source of its power is a flame blazing wildly inside its body. Being the result of an evolution via Evolution stone, Arcanine is rarely found in the wild, but when found, it is usually seen living in List of Pokémon by habitat, and Pokémon Snap has also shown it living in active volcanoes. In the Pokémon the Series episode On Cloud Arcanine, it was shown that it stashes food in its mane and carries it to its nest for its young. As shown in Pokémon Sleep, Arcanine is known to sleep at supremely comfortable sleeping spot. Arcanine when it sleeps is said to be similar to how an innocent child sleeps.

In the anime
In some locations, such as China, Arcanine is seen as a Legendary Pokémon, where it's revered for its speed and power; it is also categorized as Legendary in An Illustrated Book of POCKET MONSTERS.

Gary Oak has an Arcanine. The first time it was seen was in The Battle of the Badge.

Arcanine and its pre-evolution, Growlithe, have often been seen being used as police dogs.
Forms
Arcanine has a regional form: Hisuian Arcanine.

Ash battled an Arcanine in Fire and Ice. This Arcanine was under the ownership of Pete Pebbleman and was his final Pokémon. Despite the type disadvantage, Pete's Arcanine easily defeated Ash's Kingler by dodging its Bubble attack and using Dragon Rage. Pikachu managed to defeat the Arcanine with a Thunderbolt attack after the Ice Field melted due to Arcanine's Fire Blast.
In Hisui, Arcanine has a different look due to the volcanic activity of the environment it lives in. Its body fur is red-orange while its muzzle, mane, tail, eyebrows, and tufts of fur behind its elbows and around its ankles are gray, and the insides of its ears are light gray. The gray fur is made out of igneous rock components. Its cheek mane, ankle fur, and tail form into curls. Its elbow fur resemble wings. It has a large horn in the center of its head and three small horns between its head and ears. Its mane form into curled clumps at the back of its neck and large rectangular clumps on the sides and bottom of its neck. The rectangular clumps have light red-orange markings on them.

In The Stolen Stones, two trainers named Ramona and Keagan each had an Arcanine.
Hisuian Arcanine uses its fangs while engulfed in flames to snap at foes. Despite how deceivingly bulky Hisuian Arcanine is, it moves around nimbly like a dancer. This allows it to lead opponents in a merry chase while avoiding them at the same time. It lives in coastal mountainsides.

In On Cloud Arcanine, Drew and May wanted to capture an Arcanine for a Pokémon Contest. When it was discovered that the Legendary Pokémon had a litter of Growlithe puppies to take of, the two rivals decided to leave Arcanine alone.

In Tactics Theatrics, Dome Ace Tucker used Arcanine and Swampert to battle against Ash's Swellow and Corphish.
;Noble Pokémon
A special Hisuian Arcanine is worshiped by the Hisui people due to him being descended from one of the 10 ancient Pokémon who received a blessing from Arceus. He is one of the noble Pokémon who resides in Cobalt Coastlands watched by a Warden.

In the manga
Evolution
In Pokémon Special, Blaine is seen to have an Arcanine from a flashback in 3, when he recalls a confrontation with Team Rocket.
Arcanine evolves from Growlithe.

Crystal has an Arcanine, whom she uses for transport at times. It is able to hit targets fast and hard using its ExtremeSpeed. As explained in a flashback in 11, Arcanine was a wild Pokémon from Mt. Mortar whose left eye was injured five years ago. The cause is revealed to be a Larvitar prankster, whom Crystal manages to capture.
Hisuian Arcanine evolves from Hisuian Growlithe.

Main series
Major appearances
Gary's Arcanine
Arcanine debuted in The Battle Of The Badge, under the ownership of Gary, who was first seen using it against Giovanni in a Gym battle. It defeated Giovanni's Kingler, despite the type disadvantage, but was then completely overwhelmed by Mewtwo. It has made multiple reappearances since then as one of Gary's most commonly used Pokémon.

Other
In Fire and Ice, Pete Pebbleman used an Arcanine during his battle against Ash at the Indigo Plateau Conference. Despite the type disadvantage, Arcanine easily defeated Kingler by dodging its Bubble attack and using Dragon Rage. Pikachu then managed to defeat the Arcanine with Thunderbolt after its Fire Blast melted the Ice Field.

In The Stolen Stones, Keegan owned an Arcanine, while Ramona owned two others. Keegan's Arcanine was nicknamed Arcky. The Fire Pokémon were used to deliver some Fire Stones that were meant to be used as prizes for a local Fire Pokémon tournament. Keegan and Ramona later used their Arcanine to save Ash, Misty, and Brock from falling off a cliff.

In On Cloud Arcanine, Drew and May wanted to catch a female Arcanine for use in a Pokémon Contest. When it was discovered that she had a litter of Growlithe puppies to take care of, the two decided to leave Arcanine alone.

In Tactics Theatrics!!, Tucker owns an Arcanine. Nicknamed the "Fiery Fleet-Footed" Arcanine, it was used along with a Swampert to battle Ash and his Swellow and Corphish at the Battle Dome. Both of Tucker's Pokémon were eventually defeated after a hard-fought battle.

In flashbacks in Keeping In Top Forme!, Marley used an Arcanine when she was first attacked by TRT, in order to send them blasting off. Later, she used Arcanine to escape when she was confronted by them again.

An Arcanine appeared during a flashback in For Sure! 'Cause Sprigatito's with Me!, under the ownership of Liko's grandmother Diana. It has since made further appearances in Pokémon Horizons: The Series.

Minor appearances
An Arcanine appeared in the Japanese credits of Pikachu's Rescue Adventure.

An Arcanine appeared in a fantasy in The Rivalry Revival.

In Beauty and the Breeder, an Arcanine participated in a Pokémon breeding competition.

An Arcanine appeared in TRT's fantasy in Imitation Confrontation.

* In Pokémon Legends: Arceus's internal code, Hisuian Arcanine's Hidden Ability is Justified instead of Rock Head.
Origin
Arcanine may be based on the Ryukuan people シーサー shisa, or 狛犬 komainu, mythical creatures that resemble a mix between lions and dogs. Given its earliest Pokédex entries state it's from China, however, it may more precisely derive from the 獅 Chinese guardian lion. Statues of komainu in pairs are used as guardians that invite good spirits and repel evil ones. Its stripes and coloration are reminiscent of tigers. It could also be based on the xiezhi, a mythical fire-eating dog with similarities to lions and tigers. It may also draw inspiration from dogs with brindle ("tiger-striped") coat patterns, such as the 甲斐犬 Kai Ken.

Trivia
In its Hisuian Form, its Rock typing and appearance may be based on the komainu statues. Its ankle fur and tail resemble Plume (fluid dynamics)s of smoke.
*Arcanine originally had the name "Blaze".
*Arcanine has the highest base stats of any Pokémon that only evolves once.
*Arcanine has the highest base stat average of any non-legendary and non-pseudo-legendary Pokémon.
*Because of its high stats, its species, and the fact that it was illustrated in an ancient slab along with the Legendary Birds in the second episode, it can be assumed that Arcanine was originally planned to be part of the legendary trio in first generation games, though later dropped for Moltres.

Origin
Name origin
Arcanine is based on Japanese シーサー shisa, or koma-inu. They are mythical creatures that take inspiration from lions, tigers, and dogs. Statues of them in pairs are used as guardians and to invite good luck.
Arcanine may be a combination of arcane and canine.

Name origin
Windie may refer to wind or windy, reflecting its defining nature of being fast like the wind, further emphasized by Extreme Speed being its signature move in Generation II.
Arcanine's name is a combination of arcane, meaning mysterious, and canine, meaning dog. Windi may refer to wind, because this Pokémon runs like a wind as if it was flying and at great speed.

Arcanine (Japanese: ウインディ Windie) is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves from Growlithe when exposed to a Fire Stone.

In Hisui, Arcanine has a dual-type Fire/Rock regional form. It evolves from Hisuian Growlithe when exposed to a Fire Stone.

Biology

Arcanine is a quadrupedal, canine Pokémon with an orange pelt marked by jagged black stripes.

Being the result of an evolution via Evolution stone, Arcanine is rarely found in the wild, but when found, it is usually seen living in prairies, and Pokémon Snap has also shown it living in active volcanoes. In the Pokémon the Series episode On Cloud Arcanine, it was shown that it stashes food in its mane and carries it to its nest for its young. As shown in Pokémon Sleep, Arcanine is known to sleep at supremely comfortable sleeping spot.[1] Arcanine when it sleeps is said to be similar to how an innocent child sleeps.

In some locations, such as China, Arcanine is seen as a Legendary Pokémon, where it's revered for its speed and power; it is also categorized as Legendary in An Illustrated Book of POCKET MONSTERS.

Forms

Arcanine has a regional form: Hisuian Arcanine.

Noble Pokémon

A special Hisuian Arcanine is worshiped by the Hisui people due to him being descended from one of the 10 ancient Pokémon who received a blessing from Arceus. He is one of the noble Pokémon who resides in Cobalt Coastlands watched by a Warden.

Evolution

Arcanine evolves from Growlithe.

Hisuian Arcanine evolves from Hisuian Growlithe.

Trivia

Engravings of "Legendary Pokémon" Moltres, Articuno, Zapdos, and Arcanine in Pokémon Emergency!

Origin

Arcanine may be based on the Ryukyuan シーサー shisa, or 狛犬 komainu, mythical creatures that resemble a mix between lions and dogs.

In its Hisuian Form, its Rock typing and appearance may be based on the komainu statues. Its ankle fur and tail resemble plumes of smoke.

Name origin

Arcanine may be a combination of arcane and canine.

Windie may refer to wind or windy, reflecting its defining nature of being fast like the wind, further emphasized by Extreme Speed being its signature move in Generation II.
