In a field by the bottom of some cliffs, Hazel and her friends play hide-and-seek. The group plays a quick game of rock-paper-scissors to decide who is hiding versus seeking, and Peanut loses, meaning it is his turn to find everyone. He starts counting while the others run to their hiding places.

Peanut begins searching and easily finds Pikachu and Clefairy hiding behind some rocks by the cliff. When he walks up to them, the ground crumbles beneath them, and the three plunge into a cave below. Unsure how to get back up, Pikachu and Clefairy nervously look to him for a plan, but Peanut decides the best thing to do is rest. Suddenly, several Dugtrio erupt from the cave floor under their feet. Peanut attempts to ask them for directions back to the surface, but the Dugtrio tell him that it is too late, as they will soon be eaten by "the monster" that lives in the caves. The Dugtrio abruptly abandon them, leaving Peanut and the others to search for an exit by themselves.

As the three climb through an opening in the cave walls, a colony of Golbat charges at them. The Golbat demand their blood, saying they will leave their flesh for the monster. Pikachu tries to shock the Golbat, but one of them flies down to sink its teeth into its head.

The group manages to escape into another area of the cave. Right as they each stop to catch their breath, they realize that they are sitting in a pile of bones. As Peanut anxiously wonders if the bones are from people who had become lost in the caves, a voice behind him corrects him, saying that the bones have been "left after the monster had finished boiling his victims into soup." Peanut, Pikachu, and Clefairy turn to find themselves surrounded by a group of Marowak called the Marowak Clan. Saying that their job is to guide souls to the afterlife, they trap the three in a cage.

The Marowak Clan leaves, and the three try to escape, but to no avail. When Pikachu is able to slip through the bars, Peanut asks it to try to free them with its electric attacks, but it only succeeds in shocking them. Peanut and Clefairy then try to encourage Pikachu to flee, but it stays and hugs the others. As a massive silhouette looms nearby, the three hold each other and say their goodbyes to everyone they love. The monster emerges from the shadows and lifts away the cage as the three stay huddled together.

They wait to be eaten, but nothing happens. Looking up, the group sees that the monster is actually Onix. Onix reveals that this has all been a prank orchestrated by the Dugtrio, Golbat, and Marowak, who then apologize for scaring them. Peanut is finally able to relax, but Pikachu and Clefairy remain shaken.

Onix gives the three a ride back to the exit, and explains that this cave system is where the Stone of Adventure was. Later, when Peanut, Pikachu, and Clefairy arrive back outside, they are unsure how to find their way home. Meanwhile, Charmander, Jigglypuff, and Hazel wonder where the three have hidden.
