Kanto Route 22
22番道路 Route 22
Map description
A path to Victory Road that eventually becomes impassable.HGSS A paved road that leads straight to the Pokémon League.PE
After departing Viridian City, Route 22 turns south at a line of trees before circling around the bottom of the treeline and passing north through a grassy patch of wild Pokémon. North of the patch, the route turns west, passing over a small hill as well as a small pond. Route 22 then turns south, hopping over a ledge into another patch of grass. Six paces to the south, Route 22 returns west, then north, passing through a hole in the fence outside the checkpoint building. To the northeast, the road goes through a break in a ledge before entering the building, emerging as Route 23 on the north side.
The ledge over the western grass patch causes the route path from Viridian to the Pokémon League building to become a westbound-only path. To return east, a ledge lines the bottom of the route, providing a pathway for Trainers to return to Viridian. The pathway, two paces wide, rejoins the route southwest of Viridian.
The first battle is optional and takes place near the start of the game after Oak's parcel is delivered. In Pokémon Yellow, it affects what Pokémon become part of Blue's team later in the game.

Only minor changes exist between these Generations. In Generation III, the Pokémon League HQ Front Gate leading to Route 23 is remodeled, the small pond is made slightly bigger, and trees are added in the eastern portion of the road. Finally, rock formations have also changed.
Generation II
The route was shortened slightly, and the gate now looks like a normal gate in size. Also, the signpost in the west is moved a few tiles north.
Generation IV
The route is redesigned in most ways. The rocky outcropping in the center of the route is replaced by several trees, and the ledges just north of the eastern tall grass are removed. The roads are redesigned and now are the same as the ones of Viridian City. More rock formations are added in the southwest of the route; due to this, a set of stairs replaces the fences present in previous games and the west road has two sets of stairs before leading to the Reception Gate, which now is placed horizontally instead of being vertically at the entrance. Fences are added above the northwest road, where the signpost now is. The design of the gate is similar to that of FireRed and LeafGreen, but without trees and plants.
