Ash's Fearow (Japanese: サトシのオニドリル Satoshi's Onidrill) is a Pokémon that Ash caught in The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga.

In the manga

The Electric Tale of Pikachu

Ash's Fearow is one of the major alterations from the anime in The Electric Tale of Pikachu. It is the first wild Pokémon Ash caught in this canon. It stayed as Ash's major Flying type throughout the manga, as his Pidgeotto abandons him early on.

Fearow was a leader of a group of Spearow, which attacked and exhausted Ash's Pikachu. However, Pikachu defeated Fearow with a Thunder Shock, so Ash was able to catch it, turning Fearow into one of his most used Pokémon in this manga, staying with him the entire way. In Play Misty For Me, Ash attempted to have it battle against Misty at the Cerulean Gym (during which he had to get his hat back from her), but it came out with a sign around its neck saying, "Sleeping. Do not disturb." Only when Ash threw its favorite food, a soy sauce-covered dumpling, at Misty, did it actually do anything.

Later, Ash uses Fearow against the Black Fog, a giant Haunter that was terrorizing Lavender Town.

Fearow was also used to rescue Mahri and her Dewgong in You Bet Your Wife, though neither it nor Ash got credit for the act.

History

In the first episode of the anime, Ash and Pikachu were attacked by a flock of wild Spearow. The leader of the flock evolved into Fearow at some point during Ash's journey through Kanto.

When Ash returned to Pallet Town in Pallet Party Panic, this Fearow was again causing trouble, this time for a flock of Pidgey and Pidgeotto. After his own Pidgeotto evolved into a Pidgeot, Ash attempted to capture the Fearow while riding on Pidgeot's back. Despite its weakened state, he was still unable to capture it, and left Pidgeot behind to guard against any future attacks.

Fearow briefly reappeared in flashbacks in Fighting Flyer with Fire, Betrayed, Bothered, and Beleaguered!, and The Same Moon, Now and Forever!.

Personality and characteristics

Fearow is depicted as quite aggressive and serves as the leader of a flock of Spearow. Their aggressive nature is evident in their ability to intimidate even the flock of Pidgey and Pidgeotto, prompting the latter to seek safety in the dense leaves of trees. Fearow's formidable power is demonstrated when it easily defeats Ash's Pidgeotto with a single strike and attempts to attack the flock of Pidgey and Pidgeotto. Upon the evolution of Ash's Pidgeotto into Pidgeot, Fearow displays resilience by enduring multiple attacks and even withstanding an electric attack from Pikachu. Despite being weakened, Fearow remains determined to fight and swats away the Poké Ball, signaling its refusal to give up. However, when faced with a united front as the flock of Pidgeotto and Pidgey join forces to retaliate, Fearow chooses to retreat, showcasing a sense of self-preservation.
