As revealed in Flying Pikachu, Rising Higher and Higher!, Friede was in the Paldea region with Ludlow when Lucca introduced him to a Flying Pikachu, reigniting his passion for research. Friede eventually managed to convince Pikachu to become partners with him and traveled to Hoenn, where he had Orla convert Ludlow's fishing boat into an airship, which Friede named the Brave Olivine. Once the job was done, Orla and Ludlow joined Friede as the founding members of the Rising Volt Tacklers, with Pikachu serving as the airship's figurehead captain.

In Fly! Wattrel!!, Friede dispersed a group of Magneton disturbing the connection around the Brave Olivine. Fending them off, he restored the connection and left to pursue one of the Magneton. However, this ended up being a lure into an ambush by Spinel, who remotely ordered his Pokémon to attack Friede's Charizard. Driven into a corner, Friede was forced to reveal his Tera Orb, Terastallizing his Charizard and turning the odds enough to force Spinel's Pokémon to retreat.

In Charge! Galar Mine!, Friede arrived with Liko and Roy to the Galar Mine to look for the Black Rayquaza, but got separated from them. While looking for Liko and Roy, Friede encountered the Explores and battled Amethio again. During the battle, a Galarian Moltres that had an Ancient Poké Ball appeared. However, when Captain Pikachu got injured during the battle, Friede stayed to battle the Explores while Liko and Roy left with his partner in order for him to recover. In the next episode, Friede met up with Captain Pikachu, Liko, and Roy at Motostoke's Pokémon Center. After his Charizard recovered from his injures, Friede and the group decided to go back to battle Moltres again in order to calm it down. They succeeded and Moltres returned to its Ancient Poké Ball.

In Reunion at the Ancient Castle!, Friede, Liko, and Roy arrived at Hammerlocke in order to find an ancient castle that Diana, Liko's grandmother, was at. Through her Squawkabilly, Friede and his friends were able to find her. They hung out at the castle until the Explorers, who have been following them, arrived at their location. In the next episode, as Diana stalled the enemy group, Friede took Liko and Roy through the castle's underground passage and instructed them to stay at a safe place while he climbed up the tower and tried estabilishing contact with the Brave Olivine. Soon, he was confronted by Amethio once more, and another battle of Charizard versus Ceruledge ensued. Despite initially attacking more carefully and from a distance this time, Amethio tricked them into activating Ceruledge's Weak Armor, which increased its speed again and allowed it to land a flurry of Night Slashes. Seemingly overwhelmed and about to be hit by a finishing Psycho Cut, Friede Terastallized Charizard into a Dark type, rendering the opposing attack useless, and finished off the battle by defeating Ceruledge with a supereffective Tera Blast. After Coral set off her Glalie's Self-Destruct, Friede and his Pokémon managed to barely escape the explosion and reunited with the Rising Volt Tacklers.

In Song Within the Mist, Friede and his teammates got a lead on Lapras, who happened to be one of Lucius's Pokémon, after they got a led through a ship crew that saw the Transport Pokémon. After failing to get Lapras to come out, Friede realized that something was wrong, as he devised a plan to get the Transport Pokémon back. Through his plan, Friede realized that Lapras was using Mist to distract the ship's members so Wailord and various other Pokémon could steal food from them then lead them out when they were done to avoid suspicious. In the next episode, Friede was able to help prevent the Pokémon from stealing their food, but failed to keep up with them when Lapras used Ice Beam on their ship. Friede, Liko, and Roy decided to follow the create trail to where Lapras and its friends were hiding out. They were able to convince it that they were friends too and the Transport Pokémon returned to its Ancient Poké Ball. However, before setting off, Friede and its friends witnessed the Black Rayquaza arrive at their location.

In Roar of the Black Rayquaza, Friede watched as Amethio and Terapagos, who transformed, battled the Black Rayquaza. After Terapagos collapsed and the Black Rayquaza went off, Friede talked with Diana, who revealed that she was planning to travel on her own again, which he understood. In the next episode, Friede attended a surprise party that Liko and Roy setup for Diana's departure. In The Wild Pair, Friede and Cap!, Friede took a job assignment from his friend Shine, in order to raise money for supplies, with Liko and Roy accompany him. Their task was to find his Bramblin, which blew away from him, and they were informed that a group of Pokémon hunters were operating near the area. Although they were able to find Bramblin a few times, Friede and his friends failed to keep at one place, which led the Tumbleweed Pokémon getting captured by the Pokémon Hunters. Fortunately, Friede and his friends efforts helped save Bramblin, as it evolved into Brambleghast, and defeated the Pokémon Hunters. After brining Brambleghast back to Shine and bringing in the Pokémon Hunters into the authorities, Friede was able to get paid, which will help the Rising Volt Tacklers get supplies for their return journey to Paldea.

In HZ044, Friede and the Rising Volt Tacklers received information regarding the Explorers in Paldea, so he went to check out a suspicious watchtower with Liko and Roy. Friede decided to go in first, only to realize it was a trap by Spinel who wanted to distract him to ensure he does not interfere with his plans. The space was too enclosed to use Charizard so Friede sent out his Pikachu againt his oppnent's Umbreon. Captain Pikachu struggled intially against Umbreon due to its Foul Play and Reflect working against him, so Friede craftily formed a plan to allow him to break out of the watchtower using Umbreon's Reflect, allowing the two to escape with Charizard. Friede then joined up with his friends to interfere with the Explorers' plans to capture the Black Rayquaza.

In From So Far Away, Friede and the Rising Volt Tacklers watched in shock as Coral's attack sent Rayquaza crashing into their airship. Thankfully, Murdock and the rest were able to land it safely nearby. After the Explorers retreated, Friede joined Liko, Roy, and Dot in battling Rayquaza, until the Legendary Pokémon unleashed a Draco Meteor. Liko was promptly saved by Amethio and his Ceruledge, who reluctantly joined forces with Friede to take on Rayquaza. Both Trainers Terastallized their Pokémon and landed powerful consecutive attacks which seemed to overwhelm Rayquaza, but it used a powerful Dragon Ascent to defeat them. After Liko's newly evolved Floragato and Roy's Fuecoco managed to hit Rayquaza, everyone's Pokémon were soon exhausted form the fight and the Legendary Pokémon flew back into the sky while Friede, Liko, Roy, and Dot reunited with the rest of the team. Friede soon suggested to the three to undergo Tera Training at Naranja Academy to become stronger Trainers.

In Welcome to Naranja Academy!, after a brief conversation with Orla about the Brave Olivine's fate, it was revealed that Friede went on a journey alone with Lucius' Pokémon and equipment. Some time later, this investigation took Friede back to Exceed where he found connections between Lucius' Pokémon and a project called Eternal Blessing. Upon meeting up with old acquaintances, Friede discovered that he was in a trap set by Spinel in the shadows and, before escaping, he discovered that the entire Eternal Blessing project was no longer in Exceed's possession.

In The Terapagos I Don't Know, Friede met up with Liko, Roy, and Dot. They showed him the Scarlet Book that had a picture of Terapagos. After asking for information about Terapagos from Clavell and Geeta, Friede and his friends met with Raifort, who provided a location and information about Laqua. Before continuing his own journey, Friede wished Liko, Roy, and Dot good luck in their second Gym Leader battles.

In HZ064, Friede was alerted by Roy and Dot that Liko was missing, so he decided to ask for Grusha's help. In the next episode, Friede and Captain Pikachu catched up with the kids and was relieved that the Gym Leader had found Liko. Later, Friede asked the girl what Spinel was doing and, after hearing his story about using the Eternal Blessing that sent the man's Umbreon into a rampage and how Terapagos destroyed the crystal, purifying its effects, Friede realized that it was the Laquium and decided to find out more information about it.

In HZ057, Friede met up with Liko, Roy, and Dot. They showed him the Scarlet Book that had a picture of Terapagos. After asking for information about Terapagos from Clavell and Geeta, Friede and his friends met with Raifort, who provided a location and information about Laqua. Before continuing his own journey, Friede wished Liko, Roy, and Dot good luck in thier second Gym Leader battles.
In HZ068, Friede reunited with Liko, Roy, and Dot on the new Brave Olivine. After the children took a tour of the ship, Friede returned Lucius' Pokémon to Liko's care. After watching the Six Heroes test Liko, Roy, and Dot's improvements, Friede congratulated them on their growth as Trainers and decided to head towards Kitakami, where they arrived shortly after thanks to the new improvements the ship had.

Already in Kitakami, in HZ069, Friede and the others went to look for information about Briar's whereabouts. While participating in the Countryside Harvest Festival, a Sinistcha caught his attention, but when Friede met her Trainer Carmine, he entered into a series of disputes with her. Eventually, overcoming all of the challenges proposed by her, Friede discovered that Briar was at the Crystal Pool, and that thanks to Mollie's deeds, the group gained safe passage to be able to go there without much difficulty.

In HZ073, Friede and his group encountered Lucius's Kleavor, but he and Perrin got separated from the others chasing after the latter's Growlithe. After reuniting with Liko's group once their battle with Kleavor ended, everybody assisted to a memory of Lucius encountering the Pokémon, as well as learning about his aquaintance named Rystal. Afterwards, Kleavor returned to its Ancient Poké Ball and joined the Rising Volt Tacklers.

In HZ078, Friede, alongside Liko, Roy, and Dot, battled an Entei on a volcanic island in Johto thinking it was the specimen of Lucius. Eventually, they discovered that it was a wild one. Shortly after, they received notification from Briar of a possible warning from Entei in Area Zero, so Friede and the Rising Volt Tacklers decided to return to Paldea.

In HZ081, Friede and the younger members battled against Lucius's Entei, which turned out to be a Lucius, after passing Gouging Fire's trial with an intense battle, Gouging Fire returned to its Ancient Poké Ball. Afterwards the remaining Six Heroes summoned the Black Rayquaza to Area Zero, much to Friede and the younger members shock. In the next episode, Friede and the younger members battled against Rayquaza once more. Despite putting up a tough fight with great strategies, Rayquaza defeated most of the group's Pokemon, leaving Roy's Crocalor and Pagogo to battle Rayquaza. After Pagogo dealt massive damage to Rayquaza and Roy's Crocalor Terastallize then used a final move on it, the Sky High Pokémon was weekend enough for Roy to recapture it into its Ancient Poké Ball, fulfilling his dream. Friede and the Rising Volt Tacklers then followed Rayquaza in search for Laqua.

Friede also has a more immature and silly side, like when he eats the donuts made by Murdock for his niece Dot together with Captain Pikachu, or when he is tricked by a merchant to buy his wares to remember two people who asked him about a Black Rayquaza, however without getting any useful information. He also does not appear to take Amethio seriously, often making snarky remarks before their routinely battles. Nonetheless, he is a formidable Trainer with access to Terastallization and has shown to be very wise, such as in Special Training with Cap!, when he offered advice and training for the younger members of the Rising Volt Tacklers in order to become great Pokémon Trainers.

Friede respects Lucca as she was his teacher and had done a lot for him, as he won't have met Captain Pikachu, regain his passion for researching and formed the Rising Volt Tacklers without her help and guidance. Friede also seems to be close with Orla, due to being friends with her since childhood. Although they were apart for many years, Friede's friendship with Orla remain strong, as he immediately went to her for help in making an airship and accepted her request in joining him on his adventures. In addition, Friede has a very good relationship with Ludlow and sees him as a mentor. Friede seems to be great friends with Murdock and enjoys hanging out with him. Friede even gets along really well with the rest of his teammates, especially Liko and Roy.

Friede doesn't like to talk about his past and his life before forming the Rising Volt Tacklers, as seen in Flying Pikachu, Rising Higher and Higher!, when he didn't give the younger members any answer as to how Captain Pikachu was flying during a battle. However, after Orla told everyone that he was going to share as to how he met Captain Pikachu and the formation of the Rising Volt Tacklers with everyone, Friede gave in and decided to open up to his teammates about his past.

History

Pre-series

Friede prior to forming the Rising Volt Tacklers

Friede grew up somewhere in the Kanto region with his childhood friend Orla and had Charizard as his first Pokémon. After Orla moved to Slateport City in the Hoenn region, Friede finished growing up in Kanto and was taught by Lucca. He came to know the elder on an island in Kanto as he looked after him. Also, Friede met Ludlow and came to see him as a mentor. Friede eventually became a Pokémon Professor, after quitting his job at Exceed because he didn't want to be cooped up in a lab and lost the passion for researching, and began to live the carefree life with Ludlow on his fishing boat.

Later, Friede met Mollie, Murdock, Sohdayo, as they joined the Rising Volt Tacklers. However, Friede and the group find out that Sohdayo left the team in order to become a journalist. Sometime after Sohdayo left, Friede met Murdock's niece, Dot, as he asksed her for help in making an app for the team, which she accepted and joined the team. One day, Friede was contacted by Lucca as she asked him to bring her daughter Liko, who was attending Indigo Academy in Kanto, to Paldea and protect her during the journey there.

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Friede's rivalry with Amethio

Friede debuted in The Pendant That Starts It All (Part One). He was first seen coming to Liko's rescue on his Charizard's back after she was confronted by Amethio. His Charizard went up against Amethio's Ceruledge, but the confrontation ended abruptly after they witnessed the power Liko's mysterious pendant held. After rescuing her and Sprigatito from falling in the next episode, Friede flew her back to the Brave Olivine and introduced them to the rest of the Rising Volt Tacklers. The Explorers soon attacked the ship, and Friede challenged Amethio to a battle, this time using Captain Pikachu against Amethio's Ceruledge, only for the battle to be cut short by Liko. After Liko's Sprigatito unleashed a Leafage strong enough to break the forcefield around the battlefield, Friede and Liko watched powerlessly as the Explorers fled, kidnapping Sprigatito in the process.

In For Sure! 'Cause Sprigatito's with Me!, Friede and some of the Rising Volt Tacklers got together to search for Liko's Sprigatito. When Murdock's Rockruff found Onia shopping, Friede and Liko chased her back to a warehouse. There, he clashed against Amethio once again; this time, however, as a distraction to allow for Liko and Rockruff to be able to rescue Sprigatito. After they succeeded, Friede and Liko made their escape. At the end of the day, Friede confirmed that Liko's mother asked the group to protect Liko—something he had briefly mentioned earlier—and they decide to team up to uncover the mysteries surrounding Liko's pendant.

In The Treasure After the Storm!, Friede spotted a familiar island off the coast of Kanto and docked the Brave Olivine for maintenance to be done on the airship. In order to gather materials, he sought the alder, but left empty-handed. In the next episodes, Friede confronted Amethio once again on the island's shore. He managed to stall the Explorers's admin with Charizard, but got distracted for a moment, allowing his opponent to launch an assault on Liko, whose pendant activated at the right time to protect her. As the battle went on, Liko's pendant and Roy's ancient Poké Ball reacted to each other's presence. Suddenly, a Black Rayquaza was released from the Poké Ball and quickly forced the Explorers to retreat with a Draco Meteor shower.

In Special Training with Cap!, Friede set up a special training session for Liko and Roy after being moved by their determination to get stronger. For the newly-recruited Rising Volt Tacklers to win, they only needed to land a single hit on his Pikachu, which proved to be much more difficult than it initially seemed due to his Double Team. After a break, he encouraged them both to battle against each other in order to see how much they've grown after the training.

Friede and Lucca

In The Future I Choose, after finding out there was a communication issue around their area, Friede went out with his Pikachu and Charizard and he soon found a Magneton using its magnetic field. Friede scared it away with his Pikachu, after that he was able to get a call from Liko, asking him if he could get water for the Berries that they planted, so he brought Ludlow with him to use his Quagsire's Rain Dance. Friede later went to the Artazon's library to find information about the Ancient Poké Ball. Coincidentally, he met his former teacher Lucca, whose Squawkabilly gave him a hint that Liko's grandmother Diana was currently in Galar.

Once they bid farewell to her, the Rising Volt Tacklers resumed their search for the remaining Six Heroes. However, Friede informed his teammates that they are heading to Paldea first in order to gain information on Terapagos.

Friede and Amethio joining forces to battle Black Rayquaza

In The Plan to Capture Rayquaza, Friede and the Rising Volt Tacklers received information regarding the Explorers in Paldea, so he went to check out a suspicious watchtower with Liko and Roy.

Friede investigating the Eternal Blessing with Yanga

Friede's rivalry with Carmine

In HZ064, Friede was alerted by Roy and Dot that Liko was missing, so he decided to ask for Grusha's help. In the next episode, Friede and Captain Pikachu catched up with the kids and was relieved that the Gym Leader had found Liko. Later, Friede asked the girl what Spinel was doing and, after hearing his story about using the Eternal Blessing that sent the man's Umbreon into a rampage and how Terapagos destroyed the crystal, purifying its effects, Friede realized that it was the Laquium and decided to find out more information about it.

In HZ081, Friede and the younger members battled against Lucius's Entei, which turned out to be a Gouging Fire, after passing Gouging Fire's trial with an intense battle, Gouging Fire returned to its Ancient Poké Ball.

Character

Friede and Captain Pikachu enjoying Murdock's donuts

Friede appears to be a young and competent Trainer, albeit rather distracted and forgetful, as he forgets to mention certain things to his friends sometimes. Despite this, Friede is quite protective of his team, whether putting himself in danger to protect the ship or protecting his teammates from opponents, especially the younger members. In The Treasure After the Storm!, Friede has stated that he doesn't like to be acknowledged as a Pokémon Professor. If someone were to say his name in any type of formality, he would rather change the subject. When he introduced Liko and Roy as official members of the Rising Volt Tacklers, they both said their thanks and both referred him as "Mister Friede", which Friede quickly corrects them, preferring to be called simply by his name.

Friede even gets along really well with Mollie and the younger members, especially Liko and Roy.
