Physiology
Vulpix is a small, fox-like Pokémon that has a red-brown pelt and six gorgeous orange tails. Vulpix also has what looks like orange bangs across its forehead as well as locks. At birth, Vulpix has only one white tail, which apparently splits as it grows older. Vulpix also has a flame inside its body that never goes out.
Vulpix is a small, quadrupedal, canidae Pokémon. It has a red-brown pelt with a cream-colored underbelly. It has brown eyes, large, pointed ears with dark brown insides, and a triangular dark brown nose. Its paws are slightly darker than the rest of its pelt and have light brown paw pads. On top of its head are three curled locks of orange fur with bangs, and it has orange tails with curled tips. It is most commonly seen with six tails. However, Vulpix is born with only a white tail that splits as Vulpix aging. The tails grow hot as Vulpix approaches evolution.
Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
Vulpix can manipulate fire to such precision as to create floating wisps of flame. These wisps are sometimes mistaken for ghosts by humans, but Vulpix uses them to assist in catching prey. Inside its body is a flame that never goes out. When the temperature outside increases, it will expel flames from its mouth to prevent its body from overheating. Vulpix performs this even when sleeping, as mentioned in the Sleep Style Dex. Vulpix is known to feign injury to escape from opponents too powerful for it to defeat. Vulpix is most commonly found in List of Pokémon by habitat.
Vulpix are able to wield Fire moves naturally, as well as learning a few Ghost moves such as Grudge and Confuse Ray. Their ability, Flash Fire, prevents them from being harmed by Fire moves as well. They are one of very few species that undergo evolution with a Fire Stone.

Behavior
Forms
Vulpix usually have a friendly, if not spoiled, temperament. Because of the flame in their bodies, when the temperature outside increases, they let flames out of their mouths to prevent their body temperature from getting too hot. In the wild, Vulpix will feign injury to escape from more powerful predators.

Vulpix has a regional form: Alolan Vulpix.

Habitat
In the Alola region, Vulpix has adapted to snowy mountain peaks and developed a snowy white pelt. It has pale blue paws, blue eyes, and dark blue inside its ears. Its snout is more pronounced and pointed than that of non-Alolan Vulpix. The locks of hair on its head and its six tails are curlier and have a wispy appearance.

Vulpix can be found in grassy plains, near active volcanoes, or in mountainous areas with lots of shade.

Diet
Alolan Vulpix is believed to have arrived in the region at the same time as humans but moved to the snow-capped mountain to avoid other Pokémon. It can be found in small packs, called skulks, that are led and protected by Ninetales. Alolan Vulpix can expel breath as cold as −58 °F (−50 °C), which is capable of freezing anything. While it is not suited to warmer environments, its tail can produce ice to lower the surrounding temperature if needed. An old, local name for this Pokémon is "Keokeo", referring to its white pelt. Weavile is a natural predator of Alolan Vulpix. They can also be found in the Polar Biome of Blueberry Academy's Terarium, where Alola's island life is simulated.

Evolution
Vulpix evolves into Ninetales.
Brock had a Brock that he obtained from Suzy in Kanto in Pokémon Fashion Flash. In Beauty and the Breeder, he returned it to her.

In Love, Pokémon Style a Vulpix has been owned by Macey.
Alolan Vulpix evolves into Alolan Ninetales.

In the manga
(For specifics on this Pokémon's Evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)

Trivia
Trivia
* Vulpix was originally going to be called "Foxfire".
* In English, the category "Fox Pokémon" is shared by Vulpix, Fennekin, Nickit, and their evolutions.
* The sprite of Vulpix seems to only have five tails, while all later sprites have six.
** In Japanese, the hiragana category "きつねポケモン" (Fox Pokémon) is shared by the evolutionary lines of Vulpix and Nickit, while the katakana version "キツネポケモン" (Fox Pokémon) is shared by Fennekin and its evolutions.
* Even though the Pokédex entry states that it is born with one tail that splits as it matures, when Vulpix is bred in the games it hatches with six tails.
* The beta Pokémon Red and Green beta in listed Vulpix as Foxfire.
*Vulpix can be seen as a parallel to Growlithe. Both of them are Generation I Pokémon whose only evolutionary event utilizes a Fire Stone into their evolved forms. Vulpix is exclusive to LeafGreen while Growlithe is to FireRed, Growlithe has a 75% chance of being male while Vulpix has a 75% of being female, and they are both in the Ground. Additionally, both can have Flash Fire as their ability, and both changed their alternate color to yellow in Generation III.
* Vulpix and Ninetales are the only Pokémon whose Alolan forms are obtainable in Legends: Arceus.
* Vulpix can be seen as a parallel to Growlithe. Both are Generation I Pokémon that evolve once via a Fire Stone. Vulpix is exclusive to Red and Green, international Blue, Gold and Silver, FireRed and LeafGreen, and HeartGold and SoulSilver while Growlithe is to Red, Blue Version (Japanese), Gold, FireRed, and HeartGold. Growlithe has a 75% chance of being male while Vulpix has a 75% of being female, they are both in the Field, can have Flash Fire as their Ability, and are yellow when Shiny from Generation III on. Furthermore, both are based primarily on canine-like creatures of Japanese folklore: Vulpix from the kitsune, Growlithe from the shisa. Additionally, both have received regional forms.
* Alolan Vulpix can be seen as a parallel to Alolan Sandshrew. Both were initially introduced in Generation I and got Alolan Forms in Sun and Moon. Both Pokémon are Ices, with Vulpix being exclusive to Sun and Sandshrew being exclusive to Moon. Furthermore, both Pokémon evolve when exposed to an Ice Stone.
* Vulpix is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 299.
* Vulpix has the lowest base HP of all Fire Pokémon.
* Alolan Vulpix is the only unevolved Pokémon to have a Pokémon VSTAR card.
* Vulpix's National Pokédex number and Kitakami Pokédex number are identical: 0037 for the former, and 37 for the latter.

Origin
Origin
Vulpix, like Ninetales, are based on foxes. However, in Japan there are certain legends concerning foxes, or kitsune, as they are known there. One such legend which relates to Vulpix the most is how many-tailed foxes can breathe fire, create illusions, and have extremely long lifespans. After living a long time, these creatures take on spirit forms, which may be the reason why these two related Pokémon can learn Ghost moves.
Vulpix may be based on a red fox and the 狐 kitsune of Japanese mythology, which are said to have many tails, extremely long lifespans, and supernatural powers such as the ability to breathe fire. After reaching an advanced age, kitsune take on spirit forms, which may explain why Vulpix can learn various Ghost and Psychic moves.

Alolan Vulpix may be based on an Arctic fox, which grows a white coat of fur in the winter to camouflage in the snow.

Name origin
Name origin
Vulpix's name is a combination of vulpes, Latin for fox, and six, referring to its six tails. The rok in Rokon may be derived from roku, six; the kon may be derived from 恨, grudge which refers to the curse that Vulpix and Ninetales may cast on their foes. This is also reflected in Vulpix, which learns Grudge. Kon may also refer to the Japanese onomatopoeia kon kon which is the sound that foxes make. Furthermore, a コンロ konro is a gas burner stove. Also, an alternate reading of the Japanese word for fox, 狐 kitsune, is ko.
Vulpix may be a combination of vulpes (Latin for fox) and six. It may also involve Vulcan (mythology), the Roman god of fire.

Its Alolan name, Keokeo, may be derived from keʻokeʻo (Hawaiian for white).

Rokon may be a combination of 六 roku (six), こん kon (onomatopoetic sound of a fox's cry), and 焜炉 konro (gas stove). It may also involve 恨 kon (grudge; from the curse its Ninetales may cast on its foes).

Vulpix (Japanese: ロコン Rokon) is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves into Ninetales when exposed to a Fire Stone.

In Alola, Vulpix has an Ice-type regional form. It evolves into Alolan Ninetales when exposed to an Ice Stone. These Vulpix can also be found in Blueberry Academy's Terarium.

Biology

A one-tailed Vulpix as seen in Pokémon Battle Frontier

Vulpix is a small, quadrupedal, canine Pokémon. However, Vulpix is born with only a white tail that splits as Vulpix grows. The tails grow hot as Vulpix approaches evolution.

Vulpix performs this even when sleeping, as mentioned in the Sleep Style Dex.[1] Vulpix is known to feign injury to escape from opponents too powerful for it to defeat. Vulpix is most commonly found in grassy plains.

Forms

In Alola, Keokeo are as white as snow

Vulpix has a regional form: Alolan Vulpix.

Trivia

Origin

Vulpix may be based on a red fox and the 狐 kitsune of Japanese legend, which are said to have many tails, extremely long lifespans, and supernatural powers such as the ability to breathe fire. After reaching an advanced age, kitsune take on spirit forms, which may explain why Vulpix can learn various Ghost-type and Psychic-type moves.

Alolan Vulpix may be based on an Arctic fox, which grows a white coat of fur in the winter to camouflage in the snow.

Name origin

Vulpix may be a combination of vulpes (Latin for fox) and six. It may also involve Vulcan, the Roman god of fire.

Its Alolan name, Keokeo, may be derived from keʻokeʻo (Hawaiian for white).

Rokon may be a combination of 六 roku (six), こん kon (onomatopoetic sound of a fox's cry), and 焜炉 konro (gas stove). It may also involve 恨 kon (grudge; from the curse its evolution may cast on its foes).
