===Structure===
|}
The best example articles for structure are {{p|Bulbasaur}}, {{p|Charmander}} and {{p|Squirtle}}.
{| style="width: 100%" |

{{ProjectBox|width=50%|Goals|
The Pokémon species articles are increasingly complex.  However, to keep articles organized, the names, order and content of the sections should be according to the model below.

'''Refer to this model frequently when adding sections to a Pokémon species article, as the names, order and content of sections are all being standardized in all species articles.  If you would like to update the model, please do so with regard to both the flow of the article and the standards set forth in Bulbapedia's {{bp|manual of style}}.  Please consult other participants of the project on the talk page before making major changes to the model, particularly any regrouping or reorganizing of categories.'''

====Article model====

=====Full=====
The article should start off with the [[Template:PokémonPrevNext]] bar, followed by the Pokémon Infobox, followed by a general description of the Pokémon, including any special points (such as if it's a starter Pokémon in any games), a brief description of its abilities, and levels or ways in which the Pokémon evolves.

After this, it can be broken into three sections: general information, game statistics, and other information.  Note that it is not broken down into these three sections within the articles themselves.  Also note that the text for sections should not be indented within the text editor - it is merely indented here to aid in showing the heirarchy of sections.

'''General information'''
----

'''<nowiki>==Biology==</nowiki>'''
<br>Information in these subsections '''must''' be derived from a canon source, such as the Pokédex entries or the Pokémon anime.  '''All speculative information will be removed.'''<br>
:'''<nowiki>===Physiology===</nowiki>'''
:A description of the Pokémon's physical structure, possible related Pokémon based on similarities, and any physical adaptations the Pokémon has made to its surroundings.  Physical variations among members or groups of the species can also be noted here.
::'''<nowiki>====Gender differences====</nowiki>'''
::Any notable difference between males and females in the species, as one would note by comparing the Diamond and Pearl sprites.  Alternate gender counterparts, such as with the two genders of Nidoran, are also linked to in this section.
::'''<nowiki>====Special abilities====</nowiki>'''
::A description of any unusual or elemental abilities the Pokémon often displays, such as those related to its elemental type.  This is not a place for listing its [[ability]], despite the name; the ability should only be mentioned if it is relevant to this topic.
:'''<nowiki>===Behavior===</nowiki>'''
:A description of the Pokémon's behavior, both in the wild and after being captured.
:'''<nowiki>===Habitat===</nowiki>'''
:A description of regions where the Pokémon is commonly found.
:'''<nowiki>===Diet===</nowiki>'''
:'''<nowiki>''Main article: [[Pokémon food]]''</nowiki>'''
:All articles should link to the Pokémon food article rather than detail diet characteristics considered universal among Pokémon.  Instead, this section should contain a description of any notable or unusual points about the Pokémon's diet.
'''<nowiki>==In the anime==</nowiki>'''
<br>Only added if the Pokémon appears in the anime.  Please link to the Pokémon anime article at the start of this section.
<br>First, any details about the Pokémon species exclusive to the anime.  Then, any episodes, movies, and specials from the Pokémon anime where the Pokémon has made an appearance, and a detailed description of their importance and role.  For recurring Pokémon, only their first appearance, last appearance, and any particularly important appearances should be listed, with links to the specific Pokémon's article where further details can be found.  Appearances should be listed chronologically, regardless of importance.<br>
'''<nowiki>==In the manga==</nowiki>'''
<br>Only added if the Pokémon appears in a manga series.
<br>This section should be broken down by manga series, divided and listed in the order of Pokémon Special, Electric Tale of Pikachu, Pokémon PiPiPi Adventure, Pokémon Chamo-Chamo ☆ Pretty ♪, and then any other Pokémon manga.
<br>For each series: Please link to the series in the subsection header.  First, any details about the Pokémon species exclusive to that manga series.  Then, volumes of Pokémon manga in which the Pokémon has made an appearance, and a detailed description of their importance and role.  For recurring Pokémon, only their first appearance, last appearance, and any particularly important appearances should be listed, with links to the specific Pokémon's article where further details can be found.  Appearances should be listed chronologically, regardless of importance.<br>
'''<nowiki>==In the TCG==</nowiki>'''
<br>Only added if the Pokémon appears in the TCG.  Please link to the Pokémon Trading Card Game article at the start of this section.
<br>All cards in the TCG featuring members of the Pokémon species.  Details universal to all of the Pokémon's cards may be added, but essentially, this section should be more or less a list with links to the cards' articles themselves.  (To expand said card articles, please see the {{bp|Project TCGDex}}.)<br>
'''<nowiki>==In the TFG==</nowiki>'''
<br>Only added if the Pokémon appears in the TFG.  Please link to the Pokémon Trading Figure Game article at the start of this section.
<br>All figures in the TFG featuring members of the Pokémon species.  Details universal to all of the Pokémon's figures may be added, but essentially, this section should be more or less a list with links to the figures' articles themselves.  (To expand said figure articles, please see the {{bp|Project TFGDex}}.)<br>
'''<nowiki>==Other appearances==</nowiki>'''
<br>Places where the Pokémon has been featured in non-Pokémon canon, such as the Super Smash Bros. series.  Only added if the Pokémon appears outside of canon.  If there is an article on the series in Bulbapedia, please link to it in the subsection header.  Otherwise, please link to the appropriate article on Wikipedia in the subsection header.

'''Game statistics'''
----
'''<nowiki>==Game data==</nowiki>'''
:'''<nowiki>===NPC appearances===</nowiki>'''
:Details of Pokémon in all games (sans Smash Bros. series) which are seen but cannot be caught.  Only add as necessary.
:'''<nowiki>===Pokédex entries===</nowiki>'''
:A list of the Pokédex entries for the Pokémon in every game which it appears.  Please link to the different games' articles, coupling the paired games when the information for them is the same, as well as the Pokédex article itself.<br>
:'''<nowiki>===Game locations===</nowiki>'''
:Details on the location and rarity of Pokémon in the primary games.  Please link to the different games' articles, coupling the paired games when the information for them is the same, as well as the Rarity article.  Please link to all locations named in the table, since articles will have the specific rates of appearance for the area.  Named locations are listed first in order of appearance in the game, followed by Routes in numerical order with each number linking to the appropriate route.  Different methods of capturing, such as in the wild versus fishing, have a break between them.
::'''<nowiki>====In side games====</nowiki>'''
::Details on the location in non-standard games like Pokémon Snap, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, and Pokémon Ranger.  Please have the games in a bulleted list with details.  For the Stadium games, assume regular rental Pokémon are common knowledge; do not add it to the list unless it has more information about its appearance, such as prizes, special Pokémon, ones in minigames, or if the moveset information for rentals within the individual Cups is provided as well.
:'''<nowiki>===Base statistics===</nowiki>'''
:The Pokémon's base statistics, presented in a bar graph form.<br>
:''Note: This section may be undergoing changes soon, due to complaints about the bar graph format.''<br>
:'''<nowiki>===Type effectiveness===</nowiki>'''
:How well types affect the Pokémon, based on its own type and base stats.  Currently, all articles should follow the DP Type Effectiveness format.
:'''<nowiki>===Learnset===</nowiki>'''
:Moves the Pokémon can learn.  ''Sections should not be added if the Pokémon learns no moves in such a manner.  In particular, this applies to the Special moves subsection - do not add this section to an article if there are currently no moves the Pokémon can learn through a special method.''
::'''<nowiki>====By leveling up====</nowiki>'''
::Table format.
::'''<nowiki>====By TM/HM====</nowiki>'''
::Table format.
::'''<nowiki>====By breeding====</nowiki>'''
::Table format.  For each, please list all potential fathers which the Pokémon can inherit the move from.  Do not, however, clutter the article with descriptions of how the fathers can learn the move.  Instead, link to the father's article - details on how the father can learn the move should be listed on that article.
::'''<nowiki>====By tutoring====</nowiki>'''
::Bulleted list format.
::'''<nowiki>====Special moves====</nowiki>'''
::Any techniques which a Pokémon can learn in a special way, like Pikachu's Surf or a move learned after purification in Pokémon XD.
:'''<nowiki>===Side game data===</nowiki>'''
:Table format. Note any factors that differ between species as well as any equivalent to Pokédex entries that the game may have.
:'''<nowiki>===Evolution===</nowiki>'''
:The Pokémon's detailed evolution chain, shown as different sprites in boxes.
:'''<nowiki>===Sprites===</nowiki>'''
:Sprites of the Pokémon from all [[main series]] games, using the {{template|Sprite}} template.

'''Other information'''
----

'''<nowiki>==Trivia==</nowiki>'''
<br>Any facts which do not fit well into any other section.  This includes beta names and relations to any glitch Pokémon, such as if a glitch uses pieces of its sprite or will evolve into it. Leave out the section if there is no trivia.<br>
:'''<nowiki>===Origin===</nowiki>'''
:Plants, animals, myths, and anything else which may have served as inspiration for the Pokémon's design.
::'''<nowiki>====Name origin====</nowiki>'''
::Possible base words and inspirations for the Pokémon's name in English and Japanese.
'''<nowiki>==In other languages==</nowiki>'''
:The Pokémon's name in languages besides English and Japanese.  Possible base words and inspirations for these names may also be added.
'''<nowiki>==Related articles==</nowiki>'''
<br>A bulleted list of any relevant articles, such as specific characters of the Pokémon in the anime or manga.  TCG and TFG link lists should remain in their own sections and not be inlcuded in this subsection.<br>
'''<nowiki>==Notes==</nowiki>'''
<br>A bulleted list of &lt;ref&gt; citations from the article.  This list is automatically created by simply inserting the <tt>&lt;references/&gt;</tt> tag.<br>
'''<nowiki>==External links==</nowiki>'''
<br>A bulleted list of links to other pages, such as the Pokémon's entry on Wikipedia, or fan shrines for the Pokémon.  Links to the Pokémon's entry in a Pokédex section of another website should be included in the infobox, not the external links section.<br>

After this, there should be another [[Template:PokémonPrevNext]] bar, followed by a [[Template:Project Pokédex notice]] box to finish the article.

====Tables within the articles====
Basic formatting for a Pokémon species article table is as follows:

<nowiki>{| border="1" style="border: 1px solid #999; border-collapse: collapse; background: white; margin: auto;" cellspacing="1" cellpadding="2"</nowiki>
<br>|- style="background: #COLOR;"
<br>! Heading
<br>! Heading
<br>|-
<br>| Content
<br>| Content
<br>|}

Replace the "COLOR" with the template for the color code of the Pokémon's primary type - or, if their primary type is Normal and they have a secondary type, the color code of the Pokémon's secondary type.  The template's name is the type name and "color".  For example, <nowiki>{{grass color}}</nowiki> is the template for a Grass-type Pokémon.

Rarity and Area refer to how common or uncommon a Pokémon is. What precedes them are the initials of the versions that the specific instance applies to, [[Pokémon Red and Blue Versions|RB]], [[Pokémon Yellow Version|Y]], [[Pokémon Gold and Silver Versions|GS]], [[Pokémon Crystal Version|C]], [[Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire Versions|RS]], [[Pokémon Emerald Version|E]], [[Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Versions|FRLG]], [[Pokémon Colosseum|Colo]], [[Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness|XD]], and [[Pokémon Diamond and Pearl|DP]]. For example, whatever is entered into the frlgarea should be where the Pokémon can be found in FireRed and LeafGreen. Likewise, frlgrarity should be how rare the Pokémon is in FireRed and LeafGreen. If only one is found, such as is the case with {{p|Mewtwo}}, put "One". If it can only be found through evolution, put "None" and for the area prompt put "[[Evolve]] (pre-evolution)", replacing (pre-evolution) with the name of the Pokémon it evolves from. Likewise, if it is only available through breeding, put "None" and in the area prompt put "[[Breed]] (evolutions)", replacing (evolutions) with the Pokémon that must produce the egg.

Rarity defaults to "None", Area defaults to "[[Trade]]". Therefore, if it can only be found through [[Pal Park]] in Diamond and Pearl, this must be entered in the dparea prompt. If a Pokémon is only available in one of a pair of versions, put the version it is available in in parentheses after the area. If it is a [[Shadow Pokémon]] found in Colosseum or XD, put <nowiki>[[Shadow Pokémon|Shadow]]</nowiki> in parentheses after the area.

If an entry is unknown, delete the tag for it (that's the stuff between the | and the =, as well as the | and =). This will put the page into a category so that someone who knows what the entry is can put it in.

Type should be the Pokémon's primary type (or Flying if the Pokémon is {{t|Normal}}/{{t|Flying}}). Gen should be the Pokémon's introduction generation (1 for Pokémon #001-151, 2 for Pokémon #152-251, 3 for Pokémon #252-386, 4 for Pokémon #387-493). If the Pokémon have a gender difference, put 'both', otherwise put 'none'. Ndex should be the Pokémon's [[National Dex]] number, and name should be the name of the Pokémon.

Note: We have relatively few of the sprites uploaded to the Bulbagarden Archives. Please, if you can, try to upload some before adding the template to the page. Make sure, of course, to upload them to the correct, standardized filename.

Scope and aims

Project Pokédex covers all articles about Pokémon species, individual Pokémon, and particular groups of Pokémon. Its goal is to produce the most comprehensive database on all Pokémon, ranging from basic information to the most technical aspects possible. It will also encompass any Pokémon Trading Card Game information, appearances in various animated and written works, and any other relevant canon information.

Goals
  1. Expand Pokémon pages to have at least a paragraph of information about a Pokémon, preferably background information on that Pokémon. The Bulbasaur page is a good example of a simple introduction paragraph.
  2. Add all locations in all games, including the side games (Pokémon Snap, Pokémon Pinball, Pokémon Pinball: Ruby/Sapphire, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Pokémon Trozei!, and Pokémon Ranger, to name some of the more important ones).
  3. Add all movelists.
  4. Add Pokédex text info from games, where applicable.
  5. Add Biology information to each Pokémon species article.
  6. Add information on any appearances in the anime, including the specific episodes.
  7. Add information on any appearances in all manga, including the series and volume.
  8. List all released cards of the Pokémon.
