Natural of its species, Electivire was aggressive, brutish, and nasty from its debut as an Elekid, reflecting Paul's own attitude. In Tag! We're It...!; when Pikachu approached and greeted it, Elekid falsely appeared to greet him back, only to hit Pikachu once he turned away, an example of Elekid being nasty for the sake of being nasty. Like Paul, it hates to appear weak and if ever helped, it would clean the slate with the other side but still be annoyed that it was helped at all. Despite the harsh training it undergoes with Paul, Electivire always seems to be happy battling, and unlike some of its comrades, it never shows any form of resentment or resistance to Paul; Paul, for instance, would independently help others against Paul's wishes, and Paul would take Paul's harsh words to heart.
| |||
From the moment they met, Electivire and Infernape had an intense rivalry, even from their days as a Chimchar and an Elekid. When both were under Paul's command, Elekid always looked down on Chimchar, thinking of it as inferior to itself and feeling pleasure whenever it belittled him. Over time, however, Electivire grew to respect Infernape's increasing power; as an Electabuzz, it was surprised yet amused and glad to see that Chimchar had evolved into Monferno during their battle at Lake Acuity, with Ash's Pokémon also returning the respect towards Paul's. Infernape and Electivire's growing mutual respect for the other's strength reached its peak during their final battle at the Lily of the Valley Conference; when the referee was about to declare Infernape unable to continue, Electivire angrily stopped him from ending the fight and taunted Infernape to get back up, despite the fact that Infernape's loss would mean Paul winning the battle. It seemed extremely delighted to see Infernape getting back to its feet, wanting to prolong their battle for as long as possible. After Infernape bested Electivire, it was visibly smirking at seeing Infernape on top, and finally viewed Infernape as its equal.
| |||
Despite Electivire's harsh training and the general atmosphere around Paul—and despite its Trainer's constant scolding and tough treatment—Electivire never really showcased any signs of fear around Paul, and in fact seemed quite content and comfortable in his company. Instead, Electivire actually appeared to be slightly afraid of Paul's brother Reggie despite the latter's much nicer demeanor, seen as when Electabuzz pulled a prank on Pikachu during the latter's visit to Veilstone City. Electabuzz attempted to sneak away upon Reggie's arrival, only to be caught and reprimanded, with Electabuzz laughing sheepishly to excuse its actions.
During Electivire's debut as an Elekid, it had the ability to absorb Electric-type moves while suffering minimal damage and then use the electricity for power. This was shown during Ash's first battle with Paul when Paul wanted Ash to go first. This wasn't substantially showcased again beyond its use of Motor Drive as an Electivire. As an Electivire, it gained the ability to use its tails to grab the opponent and hold them still, shown multiple times during its full battle against Ash.
Like Paul, it was shown to have gained a softer side in Friends, Rivals, Lend Me Your Spirit!, happily playing with Pikachu and Goh's Grookey.

Paul's Electivire (Japanese: シンジのエレキブル Shinji's Elekible) is Paul's first revealed Pokémon.
History
Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl
Electivire first appeared as an Elekid during Paul's first appearance in Two Degrees of Separation!. He used it in a battle against Ash and his Pikachu in the following episode. After a fierce battle, both Pokémon fainted and the battle ended up in a draw. In Paul's flashback in Glory Blaze!, it was seen with Paul catching his Ninjask, shortly before he caught Chimchar.
Paul used it in his battle against Roark in Shapes of Things to Come!, first using it against his Geodude. Paul had Elekid start with a super-effective Brick Break, which ended up being powerful enough to defeat Geodude in one hit. Elekid next went up against his Onix. Onix proved to be a tougher fight for Elekid, dodging its attacks and overwhelming Protect. Paul eventually decided to recall Elekid to conserve its strength, but not before Onix Slammed it into the ground and triggered its Static Ability, paralyzing Onix.
Paul later sent Elekid out against Roark's last Pokémon Cranidos, with Elekid being damaged by the Stealth Rock laid down by Onix before. Roark told Cranidos to use Flamethrower, which Elekid dodged before smashing its fist right into Cranidos' knee and causing it to reel back in pain as Static activates. Cranidos shook off the effect, however, with its own Ability, Mold Breaker. However, just as Cranidos was about to attack, the knee injury that Elekid had given it kicked in, making it an easy target for Elekid's Thunder Punch attack which smashed right into Cranidos' head. Cranidos used Zen Headbutt and Elekid used Brick Break, causing an explosion to happen. After the smoke cleared, Elekid was the one standing, winning the battle for Paul.
In Smells Like Team Spirit!, Elekid evolved into Electabuzz during a Tag Battle where it was fighting alongside Chimchar (now under Ash's command) against Dawn's Buizel and Conway's Heracross. Following the evolution, it defeated Buizel while Chimchar defeated Heracross, winning their Trainers the battle.
It was revealed in Lost Leader Strategy! that Paul had left Electabuzz with his brother, Reggie, for training. It was here, three episodes later that both Electabuzz and Pikachu settled their differences and became friendlier towards one another while battling Team Galactic together.
Electabuzz rejoined Paul after the events of Enter Galactic!, to have the upper hand in the battle against the Pastoria Gym Leader. In Chim - Charred! it was seen helping Paul battle a wild Drapion, which escaped when a crash landing by Ash's Gligar interrupted them. It still seemed to have friendly feelings towards Pikachu, greeting him without issue.
It appeared again in A Pyramiding Rage!, where it took part in Paul's battle against Pyramid King Brandon. Despite landing an early super-effective Brick Break against Brandon's Regirock, the barrier that Electabuzz made with Protect was shattered by Stone Edge and it was subsequently defeated by Hyper Beam, the quick defeat shocking Ash.
It reappeared during the Full Battle that Paul had with Ash in Pedal to the Mettle! and Evolving Strategies!. It mainly used Light Screen in the battle which provided a Special Defense increase for his other Pokémon; mainly Paul's Honchkrow and Torterra against Ash's Grotle and Chimchar, respectively. It usually was recalled after doing so. Its only true opponent was Ash's Monferno. It was a close battle, but after a final clash of Mach Punch and Thunder Punch, Monferno fell and Electabuzz won the match for Paul.
It also made an appearance in Fighting Ire with Fire!, where Paul unsuccessfully used it to try to save Ash's Pikachu, Dawn's Piplup, and Barry's Empoleon from one of Team Rocket's machines. It and the other Pokémon were subsequently saved by Monferno, who evolved into an Infernape in the process.
In Casting a Paul on Barry!, during Paul's battle against Barry in the Lily of the Valley Conference, Electabuzz was revealed to have evolved into Electivire. It fought against Barry's Empoleon and, despite taking some damage from Spikes and Empoleon activating Torrent, won with ease.
Paul used it as his last Pokémon in his quarterfinal battle against Ash in Battling a Thaw in Relations!. Whilst battling Ash's Gliscor, Electivire was shown to have adapted Ash's unpredictability under the hands of Paul to quickly defeat Gliscor despite the type disadvantage. It was then up against Pikachu, which both Pokémon seemed evenly matched until Ash purposefully activated its Motor Drive Ability to lure Electivire in for a close-range attack. However, this plan backfired as Electivire was able to overpower and defeat Pikachu. Finally, it battled Infernape for the victor. After a heated battle, Electivire used Thunder against Infernape, seemingly defeating him. However, after being scolded by Paul for the final time, Infernape stood back up and activated his Blaze Ability. After a fierce exchange of blows, Infernape managed to barely defeat Electivire, losing Paul the battle.
Pokémon Journeys: The Series
Electivire reappeared in a flashback of Paul's Sinnoh League battle against Ash in Advice to Goh!.
In Friends, Rivals, Lend Me Your Spirit!, Electivire joined Paul during his trip to Professor Oak's Laboratory in order to learn more about Pokémon from Professor Oak. During the visit, they reunited with Ash, Pikachu, and Infernape. It later watched the battle between Paul and Ash.
Personality and characteristics
Natural of its species, Electivire was aggressive, brutish, and nasty from its debut as an Elekid, reflecting Paul's own attitude. In Tag! We're It...!; when Pikachu approached and greeted it, Elekid falsely appeared to greet him back, only to hit Pikachu once he turned away, an example of Elekid being nasty for the sake of being nasty. Like Paul, it hates to appear weak and if ever helped, it would clean the slate with the other side but still be annoyed that it was helped at all. Despite the harsh training it undergoes with Paul, Electivire always seems to be happy battling, and unlike some of its comrades, it never shows any form of resentment or resistance to Paul; Torterra, for instance, would independently help others against Paul's wishes, and Honchkrow would take Paul's harsh words to heart.

- Electivire is the only Pokémon Paul used in his battle against Ash in the Lily of the Valley Conference that only has one type.
- It is also the only one used by Paul that Ash had previously battled; all of Paul's other Pokémon were never before faced by Ash.
- Electivire is Paul's only Pokémon to appear in more than one series while under his ownership.
- Electivire is the first and so far only Pokémon in the anime to demonstrate two separate Abilities in different evolutionary stages.
- Aside from Pokémon belonging to Ash, Electivire has participated in more on-screen Full Battles than any other Pokémon, with three.
