Lyra (Japanese: コトネ Kotone) is the female player character in HeartGold and SoulSilver. Her male counterpart is Ethan. She replaces Kris from Crystal.

In the core series games
As the protagonist
Lyra's journey as a Trainer begins when Professor Elm asks her to run an errand for Mr. Pokémon, who lives north of Cherrygrove City. Because she may encounter dangerous wild Pokémon along the way, Elm gives her a choice between three Pokémon for protection: Cyndaquil, Totodile or Chikorita.

Lyra meets a strange boy the same age as her watching Elm's Lab from outside. When she tries to talk to him, the boy abruptly shoves her away. The boy, Silver, will become Lyra's rival, analogous to Blue in Generation I and III.

Lyra continues onward and finally meets Mr. Pokémon and completes the errand. While there she meets Professor Oak who, upon realizing Lyra's bond with her new Pokémon, gives her a Pokédex. On her way back home, Lyra again meets Silver, who has stolen one of Elm's remaining Pokémon. After defeating the boy in battle, she learns his name from his dropped Trainer Card and relays it to the police in New Bark Town. Professor Elm allows Lyra to keep the Pokémon she chose earlier, and encourages her to compete in the Johto League.

From there Lyra begins on a Pokémon journey in the Johto region, facing off against its eight Gym Leaders, defeating and disbanding the revived Team Rocket, and becoming the Pokémon League Champion by defeating the Elite Four and its previous Champion, Lance, at Indigo Plateau. Along the way, she also teaches Silver to respect Pokémon as living creatures, and not just as tools for battle.

After being declared the Pokémon League Champion, Lyra then takes a short trip on a ship, the S.S. Aqua, from Olivine City to Vermilion City in Kanto. Journeying across that region, she battles against its own set of eight Gym Leaders. Upon getting permission from Professor Oak in Pallet Town, Lyra heads for Mt. Silver via 28. Her journey comes to a close when she comes to the summit and faces the Champion from Pallet Town and Pokémon Trainer, Red, who had been training there since shortly after he became Pokémon League Champion three years prior.

As a non-playable character
If playing as Ethan, Lyra appears as an NPC in the game. When playing as Lyra, Ethan takes on this role instead.

Lyra meets the player in New Bark Town at the start of the game. In this particular scene, she is seen with a Lyra. She teaches the player how to catch Pokémon on 29 (replacing the Dude from ). Her grandparents run the Pokémon Day Care on 34. She also gives the player the Fashion Case in Goldenrod Tunnel and the Vs. Recorder on 31.

When called from certain locations, Lyra will mention that something will happen if the player takes a certain Pokémon there.

Lyra (Masters)
Lyra, who is based on the NPC character, forms a sync pair with Chikorita and its evolved forms Bayleef and Meganium, along with Jigglypuff, Celebi, Vaporeon, and Phanpy in Pokémon Masters EX. Lyra became a playable sync pair on September 17, 2019.

Lyra has also made notable appearances in one of the game's Main Stories, the Villain Arc. Unlike in the core series, both Lyra and Kris coexist in the same game.

In the anime
Main series
Lyra (anime)
Shortly after the release of HeartGold and SoulSilver, an anime counterpart of Lyra appeared in the episodes from An Egg Scramble! to Bagged Then Tagged!. Much as with May, Dawn, and Serena, she shares both her English and Japanese names with the player character she is based on. Along with her friend Khoury, she traveled with Ash and ashfr for a short time, before ultimately returning to Johto.

GOTCHA!
Lyra briefly appeared in GOTCHA!.

Pokémon Adventures
Crystal (Adventures)
Although Lyra doesn't appear separately in Pokémon Adventures, Crystal essentially serves as her counterpart by wearing her HeartGold and SoulSilver outfit during the HeartGold & SoulSilver due to her mother forcing her to wear it against her will.

Pocket Monsters HeartGold & SoulSilver Go! Go! Pokéathlon
Lyra appeared in Pocket Monsters HeartGold & SoulSilver Go! Go! Pokéathlon. None of her Pokémon are known.

Kotone can be seen talking with Gold in New Bark Town at the start of the game. In this particular scene, she is seen with a Marill. It is unknown if she will always have Marill or if the Pokémon will change if another starter Pokémon is selected. Her role in the storyline of HeartGold and SoulSilver will be similar to that of Lucas/Dawn in Diamond if they are not chosen as the player character, while Gold will presumably take this place if she is selected as the player.

Trivia
* Lyra is 4'11" (1.52 m) tall and weighs 90.4 lbs (41 kg). This was confirmed by checking the heights and weights of certain Pokémon in the Pokédex. <!--Gen I to Gen IV examples needed.-->The height was eventually confirmed by the Pokémon Scale World series of 1/20 scaled figures.
* Lyra shares many of her Japanese default names with Leaf and Dawn. She also shares all of Kris's default Japanese names.
* Occasionally, Lyra will call and claim that her Marill evolved into Azumarill. Upon meeting her again, however, she will still have a Marill. This mix-up is due to a translation error: in the Japanese version, she talks of how she would be surprised if she were to turn around on a whim while walking about and find her Marill in the process of evolving, or having evolved, into an Azumarill. She follows that thought up with: "But that would never happen!"
* According to one source, Lyra replaced Kris as the female player in HeartGold and SoulSilver because Takao Unno did not consult Ken Sugimori's original artwork before beginning Lyra's design. .

Trivia
*Much like Silver received the fan name "Kamon" from the list of Gold's names in Silver for discerning purposes, Kotone was known by much of the fandom as "Soul", following the precedent of Red's Leaf introduced in FireRed and LeafGreen. Interestingly, Gold was the only one who appeared in-game in demos with the name Soul: Kotone's name was in fact "Heart" (though likewise, Leaf was a default name for Red in LeafGreen, and Fire and Red default names for Leaf in FireRed).

*Previously to the announcement of Kotone's name in 6 September 2009's episode of Pokémon Sunday, she was seen by many fans as an updated form of Kris, rather than a new character; the announcement of her name, however, means that the developers do intend to distinguish her from her Gold and Silver counterpart.

Lyra (Japanese: コトネ Kotone) is the female player character in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. Her male counterpart is Ethan. She replaces Kris from Pokémon Crystal.

Silver via Route 28. Her journey comes to a close when she comes to the summit and faces the Champion from Pallet Town and Pokémon Trainer, Red, who had been training there since shortly after he became Pokémon League Champion three years prior.

As a non-playable character

Lyra speaking with Ethan

If playing as Ethan, Lyra appears as an NPC in the game. When playing as Lyra, Ethan takes on this role instead.

Lyra meets the player in New Bark Town at the start of the game. In this particular scene, she is seen with a Marill. She teaches the player how to catch Pokémon on Route 29 (replacing the Dude from Gold, Silver, and Crystal). Her grandparents run the Pokémon Day Care on Route 34. She also gives the player the Fashion Case in Goldenrod Tunnel and the Vs. Recorder on Route 31.

When called from certain locations, Lyra will mention that something will happen if the player takes a certain Pokémon there.

Pokémon

Lyra uses this party to show the player how to catch Pokémon when Ethan is selected as the player character in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Trivia

 • Lyra is 4'11" (1.52 m) tall and weighs 90.4 lbs (41 kg). This was confirmed by checking the heights and weights of certain Pokémon in the Pokédex. The height was eventually confirmed by the Pokémon Scale World series of 1/20 scaled figures.[4]
 • Lyra shares many of her Japanese default names with Leaf and Dawn. She also shares all of Kris's default Japanese names.
 • Occasionally, Lyra will call and claim that her Marill evolved into Azumarill.
 • According to one source, Lyra replaced Kris as the female player in HeartGold and SoulSilver because Takao Unno did not consult Ken Sugimori's original artwork before beginning Lyra's design. [5].
