Giratina (Japanese: ギラティナ Giratina) is a dual-type legendary Pokémon.

While it is similar to other legendary Pokémon in Diamond and Pearl, including its post-National Dex appearance and lack of relation to the games' overall plot, it was revealed in early February, 2008 to have an alternate form known as the Origin Forme, in addition to the form it takes in Diamond and Pearl, the Altered Forme. It is in this new form that Giratina took its place as version mascot of Platinum, the third version of Generation IV.
(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer to Game data&rarr;Form data for these details.)

It is not known to evolve to or from any other Pokémon.
Giratina's Origin Forme was officially revealed in early February 2008.

Biology
Giratina is the game mascot of Platinum, appearing on the boxart in its Origin Forme.
Physiology
As first revealed by Japan's CoroCoro Magazine, Giratina has two forms. The first (Altered Forme) is the form that appeared in Diamond and Pearl. In this form, Giratina is has a large, gray, centipede-like body with six short legs. Its legs have gold claws and gold bands on them. It has a tail and a thick black stripe running vertically along the front of its body. There is a series of red horizontal stripes running across the large black one. Three gold half-rings circle the back half of Giratina's neck at the same points that three of the red stripes are at on its front, resembling a ribcage. On its back are two large, black wings that are decorated with red, conical objects that also could be claws. The wings seem oddly out of place, due to the fact that Giratina seems far too heavy to fly effectively. The wings also seem to be ghostly, as they can change shape as if they were made of a liquid.

Giratina's head and eyes resemble those of Dialga and Palkia, causing many to theorize that it is related to the two. This assumption is confirmed in Pokémon Platinum. Giratina's shiny2 form is nearly opposite in color compared to the original. The colors of the shiny Origin Forme is the same as the Altered Forme's except for the wings which appear to be a dark shade of brown.
Along with Dialga and Palkia, it is one of the Pokémon of Myth, representing antimatter.

The second is a new Origin Forme which made its debut in Giratina and the Sky Warrior; it uses this form when traveling through dimensions other than ours, such as the Distortion World. The form-altering is triggered by a change of gravity. This form is more serpentine than Giratina's Altered Forme. The Origin Forme of Giratina has six black streamers on its back that each have a red spike at the end. Its mouth is hidden by the head plates, which swing open sideways when the mouth is opening. Giratina's legs have been reduced to spike-like protrusions. There are four more golden spikes near the edge of the tail. This version of Giratina also appears in Platinum, and can be activated outside of the Distortion World if it is holding a Type-enhancing item.
Biology
Giratina is a large gray draconic Pokémon with three gold half-rings on each side of its long neck. Its head has a gold crown-like object surrounding it with two large horns pointing sideways. A thick black stripe runs vertically along its front with five red horizontal stripes. In its Altered Forme, it has two large black ghostly wings with three red tips on each that can resemble claws. These wings can change shape as if made of a liquid or gas. Its six legs are thick and have golden claws. Two golden half-circles similar to those on its neck are on each side of each leg, resembling shackles. It has a tail with two band-like markings.

Giratina's body is likely made up of antimatter, like all things from the Distortion World.
According to the myths and legends of the Sinnoh region, in the beginning of time, the Mythical Pokémon Arceus created the Pokémon of antimatter–Giratina, the Pokémon of time–Dialga, and the Pokémon of space–Palkia, all three in their Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina. After the Pokémon universe was created, due to Giratina's violent nature, Arceus banished it to the Distortion World, a world that lies on the reverse side of the Pokémon world. Since then, Giratina carried a strong grudge against its creator Arceus and was willing to stand against it with the help of a human named Volo, but after being beaten by a human from another time and fleeing, it would start to change its ways and protect the universe from threats such as Cyrus, who had a similar goal to its former partner.
Gender differences
Giratina is a genderless species.

Special abilities
Giratina is highly aggressive and territorial, likely other reasons for its banishment. It has been reported to appear in ancient cemeteries. Giratina has the power to tear holes in reality, sometimes even creating a space-time rift. It is so big and powerful that it can even throw both Dialga and Palkia into a frienzy. The rift will also create smaller Space-time distortions all over the region it was created in. The rift can also release lightnings that drive noble Pokémon into a frenzy as well. It is also capable of Shadow Force. It generally moves by levitating itself in the air, as opposed to walking on its six legs. Giratina is said to be equal in strength to its siblings Dialga and Palkia.
As to be expected with other Ghost Pokémon, Giratina is capable of using Ghost, Dark, Psychic and Electrical attacks. Unlike other Dragon Pokémon, Giratina lacks the ability to wield Ice- and Fire attacks (save for Will-O-Wisp, which most Ghost-types learn anyway). Giratina is one out of seven Pokémon that is capable of using Aura Sphere. Since Giratina is a "true" Dragon Pokémon, it is also capable of using Draco Meteor.

In Platinum, Giratina can transform to its Origin Forme by equipping the Griseous Orb. If the orb is unequipped in battle, it goes back to Altered Forme. The Origin Forme has higher offensive stats while the Altered Forme has higher defenses. Since Giratina's Origin Forme (and the Griseous Orb, for that matter) is exclusive to Platinum, when it is traded to Diamond or Pearl it will revert back to its Altered Forme, and the Griseous Orb it was holding goes back into the player's bag.
Due to its typically violent nature, the history of Giratina was covered up out of fear from the ancient Sinnoh people. Giratina is said to have observed the real world silently while in its home dimension. It remains in its Altered Forme while outside of its home dimension. Unlike in the games, Pokémon movies depict Giratina only opening portals through reflective surfaces. Giratina also had many different titles throughout the years: "the banished Pokémon", "Arceus's shadow", "the Pokémon of Shadows", and "the being on the other side of our world".

Giratina is able to control dimensions besides those of time and space.
Giratina is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Shadow Force by leveling up, which gives it the ability to temporarily turn invisible.

Forms
Giratina can change between its Altered Forme and Origin Forme.

When in its Origin Forme, it is able to pass through dimensions at will, however, it will turn back to its Altered Forme due to the gravity change from the Reverse World. It does so by emitting a whirlwind from its mouth which creates a portal.
Compared to Palkia and Dialga, both of which resemble Arceus in their Origin Formes, Giratina's Origin Forme takes on a serpentine look. Its legs are reduced to golden-tipped spikes, and four additional golden spikes appear near the edge of its tail. While in Origin Forme, the six gold half-rings can grip objects. The back points of each half-ring have a black ghostly tendril with a red spike at its tip. The horns on its head are now facing the back. The sides of the golden "crown" cover its mouth and separate vertically like an insect's mandible when it opens its mouth. The black vertical stripe is broken into pieces and runs down its body.

It also seems to have a connection to reflective objects, such as mirrors and pools of water. Reflections embody the concept of an antimatter world.
The Origin Forme of Giratina is said to be Giratina's true form, capable of traveling through and controlling dimensions besides those of time and space. Giratina can only be in its Origin Forme when in its home, the Distortion World, or when holding either a Griseous Orb or Griseous Core. Giratina can also maintain its Origin Forme in the real world without items should it get a sufficient amount of power, enough to potentially be equal to Arceus. Giratina is at its full power when in the Origin Forme, and is always levitated in this state. When in its Origin Forme, it can pass through dimensions at will, although it will turn back to its Altered Forme due to the gravity change from the Distortion World. Giratina has the power to turn itself into a shadow and to merge the Distortion World with the Pokémon world, as seen during the events of Spear Pillar. However, this has the dangerous side effect of distorting it to the risk of being destroyed.

Judging by the events in Pokémon Platinum and Giratina and the Sky Warrior, its portrayal in ancient folklore, and its Platinum Pokédex entry, it's assumed that Giratina is a highly aggressive Pokémon protective of its home. It should be noted that despite the legends depicting it in a more evil light than the others in its trio, Giratina arrived at Spear Pillar to save the world from Cyrus' attempted apotheosis; though it may have arrived to protect its own world from destruction.

Giratina made its anime debut in Giratina and the Sky Warrior.  In the movie, Giratina ambushes and drags Dialga into the Reverse World in order to exact revenge against the Temporal Pokémon for causing damage to it during its fight with Palkia some time before. Zero also attempts to copy Giratina's powers in order to take control over the Reverse World. Throughout the movie, Giratina takes on its Origin Forme whenever it is in the Reverse World, and its Altered Forme whenever it is in the real world.

The Giratina makes a second appearance in the twelfth movie alongside Dialga, Palkia, and Arceus.

Along with the other members of the Pokémon of Myth, Giratina has the ability to switch to a second form: Origin Forme. However, Giratina is unique in that its standard form is called Altered Forme.

Giratina's Altered Forme debuted in Diamond and Pearl, while its Origin Forme was introduced in Platinum. From Platinum to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, it transforms into its Origin Forme while holding a Griseous Orb. In Platinum, it also transforms into its Origin Forme while in the Distortion World. In Legends: Arceus, it changes between its forms when exposed to a Griseous Core. In Scarlet and Violet, Giratina transforms into its Origin Forme while holding a Griseous Core. If it is deposited in HOME, it will revert to its Altered Forme.

The forms differ in their base stats: Giratina's Origin Forme has its Defense and Special Defense switched with its Attack and Special Attack (its base stat total is unchanged). In Legends: Arceus, its signature move, Shadow Force, has modified base power and accuracy when used by its Origin Forme, as well as a unique animation.

Major appearances
Giratina (movie)
Giratina debuted in Giratina and the Sky Warrior, where it sought revenge against Dialga for the damage it caused to its home, the Reverse World, during its battle with Palkia in The Rise of Darkrai. Zero later attempted to copy Giratina's powers so he could conquer the Reverse World. Throughout the movie, Giratina would take on its Origin Forme whenever it is in the Reverse World, and its Altered Forme whenever it is in the real world.

In Arceus and the Jewel of Life, Giratina was shown for the first time with both the other members of its trio. It resumed its attack on Dialga, but was finally calmed down through the intervention of Ash and Sheena. It later joined forces with Dialga and Palkia to fight Arceus.

Other
In Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, Giratina was one of six Legendary Pokémon summoned and hypnotized by the shadow List of Pokémon with form differences as its reinforcements. It and its teammates engaged in a battle against the Latios, Latias, and Shiny Rayquaza summoned to protect the real Hoopa in Dahara City. Eventually, after the shadow Hoopa was sealed in a Prison Bottle, the hypnosis on Giratina and the other Legendary Pokémon was lifted, and Giratina departed for its home. It appeared in both of its formes.

Minor appearances
Giratina made its animated series debut in Try for the Family Stone! as an illusion that was created by Mitchell's Murkrow.

In Dealing With a Fierce Double Ditto Drama!, MTR's boss fantasy featured Giratina.

* Giratina has many differences from the other members of its trio:

** In Platinum, it has its own unique battle music, can change forms between Giratina, and has two different menu sprites.
* Giratina is the only dual-type Pokémon that has weaknesses to both of its own types, as well as the only Ghost legendary Pokémon.
** It is the only member without any double resistances.
* No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Giratina.
** Its HP is its highest stat rather than Special Attack.
* Giratina has the highest HP stat of all legendary Pokémon, however, it is tied with non-legendaries Slaking and Drifblim and beaten by Snorlax, Wailord, Wobbuffet, Chansey, and Blissey, all non-legendary.
** It does not have a Pokémon of Myth orb in Diamond and Pearl (the Griseous Orb was introduced in Pokémon Platinum).
* Giratina is one of very few non-Flying Pokémon that is able to learn Fly. The others are: Vibrava, Flygon, Latios, and Latias (all four of which have the ability Levitate), Mew, Smeargle, and Arceus (all three of which can learn all HM moves). It is the only one who does not permanently keep Levitate. Additionally, before the revelation of its Origin Forme, it was unique in learning Fly but not having legitimate access to Levitate at all.
** It is met at level 70 in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl while the other members are met at level 47. This is reversed in Pokémon Platinum.
* It is one of eight Pokémon which can change forms, the other seven being Castform, Deoxys, Cherrim, Burmy, Rotom, Shaymin, and Arceus. Giratina's Origin Forme is only available in Platinum.
** It is separated from the other members of its group in the Pokédex by Heatran and Regigigas.
* In , Giratina is met at level 70, while Dialga or Palkia are met at level 47, but in Platinum, Giratina is met at level 47, while Dialga and Palkia are met at level 70.
** It is the only member without a 100% recruit rate in the Mystery Dungeon series.
*Among all members of the Dragon trio, Giratina is the only one not having Special Attack as its highest stat, having HP as its highest stat.
** It is the only member whose box art differs from its official art released with Diamond and Pearl.
* Giratina, as of Platinum, is the only Pokémon to come out from above instead of from the left of the screen during the start of the battle.
* Giratina's encounter in the Distortion World in Pokémon Platinum has several distinctions from other battles:
* When Giratina is first fought against in Platinum, it does not have a shadow. After capturing it, though, it has one when leaving a Poké Ball. This may also occur following the use of Shadow Force.
** At the start of the battle, it uniquely descends from the top of the screen, and is accompanied by the unique message "The Distortion World's Giratina appeared!". It is still a wild Pokémon despite the unique message.
** Coincidentally, Cyrus keeps referring to Giratina as the shadowy creature.
** No platform is displayed beneath Giratina, and it does not have a shadow until it uses Shadow Force or breaks out of a Poké Ball.
* The first shown sprite of its Origin Forme was not used in Platinum.
* Giratina is tied with Lunala, Necrozma Necrozma, and Calyrex Calyrex for the highest base stat total of all Ghost Pokémon.
* Giratina is the only one of the dragon trio with a catch rate of 3.
** Giratina is tied with Drifblim for the highest base HP stat of all Ghost-type Pokémon.
* In its Origin Forme, Giratina has the highest Attack stat of all Ghost Pokémon.
* Giratina is the only Legendary Pokémon that can be obtained in all five of the Generation IV core series handheld games.
* Giratina's Altered Forme is the second heaviest of all Pokémon, surpassed only by Groudon; however, its Origin Forme is the fourth heaviest.
* In HeartGold and SoulSilver, the second frame of Giratina's Altered Forme sprite was changed, but the static sprite remained the same.
* Giratina is the only Pokémon in a legendary trio that is separated from the other members of its group in the Pokédex; Heatran and Regigigas separate Giratina from Dialga and Palkia.
** This sprite is also present in Pokémon Platinum's data, but is unused.
* Giratina is the only Pokémon of its trio whose Shadow Force is not of the Dragon.
* In , Fantina has an Origin Forme Giratina without a Griseous Orb in The Battle Between Legendary Pokémon.
* Giratina is the only one of its trio without a jewel located somewhere on its body.
* Altered Forme Giratina is the heaviest Ghost-type Pokémon and the only Dragon Pokémon List of Pokémon by shape.
* Giratina is considered to be the forgotten one among itself, Dialga and Palkia, even though all three were created by Arceus.
** Origin Forme Giratina is both the tallest Ghost-type Pokémon and the tallest Generation IV Pokémon.
* Giratina is the only Pokémon that is able to hold the Griseous Orb; a Ditto that transforms into an Origin Forme Giratina during battle will immediately change back into Altered Forme (unless in battle with it in the Distortion World).
* In Legends: Arceus, Shiny Giratina in its Origin Forme causes a game crash when using Shadow Force. This bug has yet to be fixed.
* In Platinum, if Giratina is knocked out in the Distortion World, it can be battled again in Turnback Cave (and thus in Altered Forme).
* The symbols for the Platinum expansion and the Lost Origin expansion resemble Giratina's Origin Forme, seen from the front.
** If it is defeated a second time in the Turnback Cave battle, it will reappear in one week for another battle. It shares this trait with Heatran. However, the items rewarded for completing Turnback Cave's maze will be unavailable during this time.

* In interviews Junichi Masuda and Takeshi Kawachimaru did for G4, it was said that Giratina and its Distortion World were created to be personifications of antimatter.
* Giratina is the only Pokémon at the end of a regional Pokédex listing that is not an event-exclusive Pokémon.
Origin
Origin
Giratina is possibly based on a basilisk. In the Altered Forme, the wings may be based on a bat's, and its body has an insect-like, six-legged feature, but its posture is similar to a sauropod. Its Origin Forme has a body similar to a serpent, while the six protrusions on its body may be based off of a scorpion's stinger.
According to Junichi Masuda and Takeshi Kawachimaru, Giratina and the Distortion World are personifications of antimatter.

Giratina may also draw inspiration from fallen angels, celestial beings that rebelled against God and were excommunicated to Hell — analogous to Giratina being exiled by Arceus to another dimension due to its belligerent nature. Furthermore, it might allude to Samael, who is the ruler of the 5th Heaven and has grim and destructive duties whilst being a member of a heavenly host.

In its Altered Forme, Giratina resembles a European dragon or sauropod. It also shares similarities with some kaiju depictions in popular media. Its wings may be based on a bat's, and its body has an insect-like six-legged feature.

Origin Forme Giratina's serpentine body may be based on a Chinese dragon, an Amphiptere, or an Ōmukade, a giant centipede with dragon-like features, said to prey on dragon and be as large as a mountain. It may also be based on a Seraph, a class of angels known for its six wings and, in some depictions, a serpentine body. Similarly, it also shares some similarities with other serpents or dragon-like creatures in Abrahamic religions, such as the Serpents in the Bible#Ancient serpent or the Leviathan. The design of its six wings may be based on a scorpion's stinger or spider legs.

Additionally, Its Ghost type may parallel its counterparts' type: Palkia is part Water, and Dialga is part Steel — all three may reference the three primary State of matter; gas, liquid, and solid.

Name origin
Name origin
Giratina's name may be derived from platinum (written as プラチナ platina in katakana; compare to ギラティナ) and either guillotine, <span class="plainlinks">girasol</span>, giraffe or girare (meaning to wander).
Giratina may be derived from platina (Spanish for platinum). It may also involve guilty, guillotine, ギラリ girari (onomatopoeia for glaring), and possibly girasol (a type of opal).

Giratina (Japanese: ギラティナ Giratina) is a dual-type Ghost/Dragon Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

While it is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, Giratina transforms from its standard form, called its Altered Forme, into a second form, called its Origin Forme, while either holding a Griseous Orb (Generation IV to Generation VIII), a Griseous Core (Generation VIII onward), or while in its home, the Distortion World.

(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer to Game data→Form data for these details.)

Giratina's Origin Forme was officially revealed in early February 2008.

Giratina is the game mascot of Pokémon Platinum, appearing on the boxart in its Origin Forme.

Along with Dialga and Palkia, it is one of the Pokémon of Myth, representing antimatter.

Biology

Altered Forme Giratina's wings shaped into claws

According to the myths and legends of the Sinnoh region, in the beginning of time, the Mythical Pokémon Arceus created the Pokémon of antimatter–Giratina, the Pokémon of time–Dialga, and the Pokémon of space–Palkia, all three in their Origin Formes.

It is also capable of cloaking itself in darkness as it attacks. It generally moves by levitating itself in the air, as opposed to walking on its six legs. Giratina is said to be equal in strength to its siblings Dialga and Palkia.

Giratina is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Shadow Force by leveling up, which gives it the ability to temporarily turn invisible.

Forms

Origin Forme Giratina's plate mask opened

Giratina can change between its Altered Forme and Origin Forme.

Form data

Along with the other members of the Pokémon of Myth, Giratina has the ability to switch to a second form: Origin Forme. However, Giratina is unique in that its standard form is called Altered Forme.

Giratina's Altered Forme debuted in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, while its Origin Forme was introduced in Pokémon Platinum. From Platinum to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, it transforms into its Origin Forme while holding a Griseous Orb. In Platinum, it also transforms into its Origin Forme while in the Distortion World. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it changes between its forms when exposed to a Griseous Core. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Giratina transforms into its Origin Forme while holding a Griseous Core. If it is deposited in Pokémon HOME, it will revert to its Altered Forme.

Other

It and its teammates engaged in a battle against the Latios, Latias, and Shiny Rayquaza summoned to protect the real Hoopa in Dahara City. Eventually, after the shadow Hoopa was sealed in a Prison Bottle, the hypnosis on Giratina and the other Legendary Pokémon was lifted, and Giratina departed for its home. It appeared in both of its formes.

Trivia

Origin

According to Junichi Masuda and Takeshi Kawachimaru, Giratina and the Distortion World are personifications of antimatter.[1]

Origin Forme Giratina's serpentine body may be based on a Chinese dragon, an Amphiptere, or an Oomukade, a giant centipede with dragon-like features, said to prey on dragon and be as large as a mountain. It may also be based on a Seraph, a class of angels known for its six wings and, in some depictions, a serpentine body. Similarly, it also shares some similarities with other serpents or dragon-like creatures in Abrahamic religions, such as the ancient serpent or the Leviathan. The design of its six wings may be based on a scorpion's stinger or spider legs.

Additionally, Its Ghost type may parallel its counterparts' type: Palkia is part Water-type, and Dialga is part Steel-type — all three may reference the three primary states of matter; gas, liquid, and solid.

Name origin

Giratina may be derived from platina (Spanish for platinum). It may also involve guilty, guillotine, ギラリ girari (onomatopoeia for glaring), and possibly girasol (a type of opal).
