It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.
It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Azelf is the third member of the lake guardians, the Sinnoh region's Psychic legendary Pokémon trio.
Along with Uxie and Mesprit, Azelf is a member of the lake guardians, a Legendary trio first discovered in the Sinnoh region. Azelf is known as the Being of Willpower (Japanese: 意思の神 God of Willpower).

Biology
Biology
Physiology
Azelf is a small, gray-blue, fairy-like Pokémon. It has two tails that each have a red jewel on them. Azelf has a partially cyan face with another red gem encrusted into its forehead. Azelf has a cone-shaped head with elf ear-like protrusions on each side.
Azelf is a small, grayish blue, fairy-like Pokémon. It has two tails that each have a red jewel on them. These are, presumably, two of the jewels which complement the Red Chain. Azelf has a partially cyan face with another red gem encrusted into its forehead. Azelf has a cone-shaped head with elf ear-like protrusions on each side.
Gender differences
Azelf is genderless, although it is referred to as a male in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2.

Special abilities
Azelf's spirit can leave it's body without dying. It's spirit can return to the body at will. Azelf has the ability to control one's will, according to the Sinnoh Pokémon Handbook.
It can also enter the body of another Pokémon or a human. According to legend, it can cause humans to lose all will inside of them, making them completely immobile.

Behavior
Azelf can be very cautious around people and Pokemon but when it feels threatened it will reveal its bold side.

Habitat
Azelf sleeps beneath Lake Valor.

Diet
In the anime
Azelf appeared in spirit form (much like Mesprit did to Dawn in Following a Maiden's Voyage) to Ash in Pruning a Passel of Pals!.

Azelf first appeared in its physical form in DP151, where it was the first to be captured by J and Team Galactic. It was then controlled by the team to help fulfill its goal. In DP152, after breaking from their control with the help of Ash's Pikachu and Staraptor, it helped in stopping Cyrus's plot to use Dialga and Palkia.

In the manga
Azelf's spirit can leave its body without dying and can return to the body at will. It sleeps at the bottom of a lake to preserve the balance of the world. It can control an individual's will or enter the body of an individual. Legends say that if Azelf is harmed, it can cause humans to lose all will inside of them, making them completely immobile for all eternity. Azelf is highly feared due it having the power to manipulate the will of foes into its own puppets. It was shown in The Needs of the Three! and The Battle Finale of Legend! that it can teleport itself, as well as other Pokémon and humans. Azelf can be very cautious around people and Pokémon. However, if threatened, it will reveal its bold side. In the past, it has been referred to as the "Being of Willpower" due to its role in giving humans the determination to face challenges in life. Alongside the other lake guardians, Mesprit is needed for the creation of a Red Chain. Either through gems extracted from its body or through its fang. Together they're also capable of destroying a Red Chain. They even have the power to calm down Dialga and Palkia should the deities be enraged, but not both at once. In Legends: Arceus, Azelf is shown to be capable of speaking the human language via telepathy.
Pokémon Adventures
Azelf appeared briefly to Diamond and Pearl when they were trying to find Platinum at Lake Valor. Later, Pearl is sent to guard Azelf from Team Galactic. He was chosen because, fittingly, he is very hyper when compared to the Mesprit Diamond or the Uxie Platinum.

In the TCG
Azelf and the other lake guardians are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Mystical Power.

It was then controlled by Team Galactic to help fulfill its goal. In The Battle Finale of Legend!, after breaking from their control with the help of Ash's Pikachu and Staraptor, it helped in stopping Cyrus's plot to use Dialga and Palkia. It reappeared in Pokémon: The Arceus Chronicles, helping to stop a rampaging Heatran.

Other
In PK21, an Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie served Pikachu and his friends some apples.

Azelf (Japanese: アグノム Agnome) is a Psychic-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Along with Uxie and Mesprit, Azelf is a member of the lake guardians, a Legendary trio first discovered in the Sinnoh region. Azelf is known as the Being of Willpower (Japanese: 意思(いし)(かみ) God of Willpower).

Biology

Azelf is a small, gray-blue, fairy-like Pokémon. It has two tails that each have a red jewel on them. Azelf has a partially cyan face with another red gem encrusted into its forehead. Azelf has a cone-shaped head with elf ear-like protrusions on each side.

In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Azelf is shown to be capable of speaking the human language via telepathy.

Azelf and the other lake guardians are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Mystical Power.

In the anime

Main series

Azelf in the anime

Major appearances

Azelf (anime)

In Pruning a Passel of Pals!, Azelf's "soul" appeared to Ash, much like what Mesprit did to Dawn.

Azelf physically debuted in The Needs of the Three!, where it was the first to be captured by J and Team Galactic.

Minor appearances

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky - Beyond Time & Darkness, an Azelf, along with the other members of its trio, were the protectors of the Time Gear.

A silhouetted Azelf appeared in a fantasy in Healing the Healer!.

In the Diamond & Pearl arc, Azelf was to be captured as part of Team Galactic's plans. Commander Saturn led the operation to capture Azelf, and succeeded; despite the resistance of Pearl. Azelf connected with Pearl the most, as he had great determination; Pearl had been at the center of Lake Valor and saw Azelf on his last visit there. It first appeared in Tackling Tangrowth.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure!

Along with Uxie and Mesprit, Azelf was captured by Team Galactic to create the Red Chain so that they can control the legendary Dialga. It was eventually freed and helped stop Dialga by breaking the Red Chain. It first appeared in The Legendary Pokémon, Captured.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blazing Exploration Team

Azelf appeared in BET2.

In the TCG

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

On the Spear Pillar stage, occasionally the lake guardians make cameo appearances during the fight; however, they do nothing.

Trophy information

A Willpower Pokémon. Born from the same Egg as Uxie and Mesprit, this Pokémon maintains the balance of things in the world from the bottom of Lake Valor. Some say that anyone who injures it will become unable to perform any kind of action after seven days. It wields many strong attacks, like the devastating Last Resort. It can also protect itself from sleep attacks with Uproar.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Azelf appears as a Spirit alongside Mesprit and Uxie.

Trivia

Origin

Azelf seems to be based on a pixie or a fairy, although its Japanese name suggests that it is a gnome. The lake guardians could possibly have originated from the Imperial Regalia of Japan, which are also called the Three Sacred Treasures. Azelf would be the Kusanagi, which embodies valor. Additionally, it may draw inspiration from Thrones—one of the three highest ranking angel classes in Christianity—also known as the "valiant ones."

Name origin

Azelf may be a combination of A of the acronym UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animal, wasei-eigo for cryptid) and elf. It may also involve the pronoun us, as well as azure.

Agnome may be a combination of A of the acronym UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animal, wasei-eigo for cryptid) and gnome.
