Weedle (Japanese: ビードル Beedle) is a dual-type Bug/Poison Pokémon.

It evolves into Kakuna starting at level 7, which evolves into Beedrill starting at level 10.

Biology

Physiology

Weedle is a small, brown, serpentine larva Pokémon with a segmented body. Weedle has dark, circular eyes, many little pink feet and a pink, round nose. Weedle has a poisonous stinger on both its tail and head. Its bright coloration is intended to warn off its enemies.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Weedle isn't very powerful, but it can spit a sticky thread to entangle its foes. It can also use one of its two stingers to poison a foe.

Behavior

Weedle generally prefer to remain undisturbed. They live in colonies with their evolved forms, Kakuna and Beedrill, and will recruit them to assist in their revenge if bothered.

Forest Pokémon

Weedle can be found in forests, misty wooded areas, and grasslands. Weedle usually hide in grass and bushes, under the leaves that they eat. They are commonly found in Kanto in Viridian Forest, and Johto in the Ilex Forest, although they also can be encountered in Sinnoh at Route 204 in Pokémon Diamond, Pokémon Pearl, and Pokémon Platinum, and Eterna Forest in Pokémon Platinum with Pokémon LeafGreen in slot 2 on rare occasions.

Diet

Weedle primarily eat leaves. They appear to prefer some leaves over others, and they can distinguish between them by smelling them with their big red proboscis, or nose. Weedle eats such a copious amount that it eats its weight in leaves every day. It has also been known to eat paper.

Major appearances

In Challenge of the Samurai, Ash was very close to catching a Weedle. He used his newly caught Pidgeotto to battle, Weedle was knocked unconscious and when Ash was about to throw his Poké Ball, Samurai came up and asked Ash if he was a Trainer from Pallet Town. This distracted Ash from catching the Weedle, so it got away. This same Weedle later warned its kind and together, they tried to avenge its near capture by attacking his friends.

Casey captured a Weedle during the Bug-Catching Contest in The Bug Stops Here. She released it in accordance with Contest rules.

Minor appearances

A Weedle appeared in Mewtwo Strikes Back.

Weedle appeared a few other times while Ash was in Viridian Forest, such as when a number of them ate Team Rocket's cardboard tank.

Weedle also appeared in The Kangaskhan Kid.

A Weedle appeared in The Ultimate Test under the ownership of a Trainer allowing Todd to photograph it. Due to a coloring error, this Weedle is the color of Green normally seen on a Caterpie. Despite being an error, Shiny Weedle are green in Generation II.

Multiple pink Weedle resided on the Pinkan Island in In the Pink.

Weedle had a small cameo in Tracey Gets Bugged, as one of the Bug Pokémon on Murcott Island.

A Weedle appeared in Illusion Confusion! as an illusion created by Haunter and Gengar.

Multiple Weedle appeared in For Crying Out Loud where they were accidentally wet by Wilhelmina's Marill.

Multiple Weedle also appeared in Celebi: Voice of the Forest.

A Weedle was one of the inhabitants of an oasis just for Pokémon in Got Miltank?.

Multiple Weedle appeared in For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll! where they protected the Tin Tower after Team Rocket stole the crystal bells on the top floor.

In Talkin' 'Bout an Evolution, Team Rocket's experiments made Pokémon feel sick, one being a Weedle.

A Weedle was one of the Pokémon seen in a forest outside the Ice Path in EP250.

A Weedle was used by one of the students of the Pokémon Trainer's School in Gonna Rule The School!.

Weedle's first appearance is a cameo in Bulbasaur, Come Home! as one of the Pokémon that escapes from Professor Oak's Laboratory. Also, Green caught a Weedle to try to use to trick people into trading better Pokémon for it at the Pokémon League tournament in Pokémon Adventures.

In the Pokémon Get da ze! manga

Shū befriended and caught a Weedle in Pokémon Get da ze!.

Weedle's early design, Kokana

• Weedle is the only Pokémon incapable of learning Normal-type moves, if Hidden Power's inability to be a Normal move in practice is not considered in Unown's case.
• Despite being classified as the Hairy Bug Pokémon, no artwork of it depicts it having any visible hair.
• Up until Platinum, Weedle was completely incapable of dealing damage to Steel-type Pokémon outside of Struggle. This was because Weedle could only learn Poison Sting, which Steel types are immune to. In Platinum onwards, Weedle can learn Bug Bite. However, Steel types still resist moves of its type.
• Weedle, along with Caterpie and Wurmple, evolves at level 7, the lowest level required for any Pokémon that evolves by leveling up.
  • Also, their known Abilities are the same, Shield Dust and Run Away.
• As of Generation V, Weedle is the only brown Poison-type type Pokémon.
• An early design of Weedle's sprite was shown on Game Freak's official Japanese website.

Origin

Weedle appears to be based on the larva of a bee.

Name origin

Weedle is likely a combination of worm and needle (referring to the stingers on its body). It also may derive as a corruption of weevil, another sort of bug. As well, the weed part of Weedle may refer to it eating plant life.
