One day, her friend Hop invites him to meet his big brother Leon, the Champion of the Galar League, so that they both can receive a starter Pokémon from him. After receiving their starters, Gloria and Hop follow a runaway Wooloo into the Slumbering Weald. Inside the foggy forest, they encounter a mysterious Pokémon that is completely unaffected by moves. They are soon rescued by Leon, and set out to receive an endorsement from him so that they can participate in Galar's Gym Challenge. After some convincing by Professor Magnolia, Leon agrees to give both Gloria and Hop an endorsement. Just then, two Wishing Stars fall out of the sky, and Professor Magnolia turns them into Dynamax Bands for Gloria and Hop, allowing them to Dynamax their Pokémon. They then travel together to Motostoke to attend the Gym Challenge's opening ceremony, where they meet Chairman, leader of Macro Cosmos and the chairman of the Galar League, as well as a band of hooligans known as Team Yell.

After the opening ceremony, Gloria sets out to collect the eight Badges required to compete in the Champion Cup. Along the way, Professor Magnolia's granddaughter and assistant Sonia tell her about Galar's history and a mysterious event known as the Darkest Day. Gloria ends up uncovering pieces of the Darkest Day's history during her journey, much to Sonia's pleasure. Eventually, Gloria manages to successfully collect the eight Badges and travels to Wyndon, where the Champion Cup is held. She wins her way through the Champion Cup semifinals, where she defeats Hop and ends his dream of surpassing his brother. After confronting Oleana at Rose Tower, Gloria participates in the Champion Cup finals and wins her way through it, earning herself the right to challenge Leon.
Gloria eventually collects the eight required Badges and travels to Wyndon, the biggest city in Galar and the setting of the Champion Cup, where she competes for the right to challenge Leon. Gloria wins the tournament, but her battle with Leon is interrupted before it can even begin by the actions of the Galar League Chairman Rose, who has awakened a Pokémon known as Eternatus brought about an event called the Darkest Day, which Galar had previously experienced thousands of years ago. However, before Gloria and Leon's battle can begin, Rose makes a public announcement about bringing forth the second Darkest Day to save Galar from an energy crisis a thousand years in the future. To stop the crisis, Gloria and Hop travel to the Slumbering Weald again to seek help from the Legendary Pokémon Zacian and Zamazenta, one of whom had been the mysterious Pokémon they had witnessed at the start of their journey. They find and take along a Rusted Sword and a Rusted Shield from the heart of the forest and go to confront Rose in Hammerlocke, where it is revealed that the Darkest Day is the result of Rose awakening a Pokémon known as Eternatus. After defeating Rose, Gloria and Hop go to face Eternatus at the top of the Hammerlocke Stadium, where Leon unsuccessfully tries to caught it, forcing Gloria to battle it. Once Eternatus seems to be defeated, however, it suddenly transforms into its even more powerful Eternamax form. However, thanks to the sword and the shield they found, Gloria and Hop are able to summon Zacian and Zamazenta to their aid, and together, they defeat Eternatus, allowing Gloria to catch it and thus end the crisis. Three days later, she finally takes on Leon in a battle at Wyndon Stadium and defeats him, ending Leon's career as the undefeated Champion of Galar and making Gloria the new Champion.
Later, Gloria and Hop are forced to deal with a group of rampaging Dynamax Pokémon let loose by a pair of rich brothers named Sordward and Shielbert, who are trying to reinstate the monarchy of Galar and denigrate Zacian and Zamazenta. Eventually, the brothers' plans are stopped, and both Gloria and Hop end up catching one of the two Legendary Pokémon.

During the post-game, Gloria and Hop travel to the heart of Slumbering Weald to return the Rusted Sword and the Rusted Shield, only to be confronted by the rich brothers Sordward and Shielbert, who try to steal the artifacts. Although Gloria manages to defeat one of the brothers and recover one of the stolen items, they still manage to get away with the other one. Gloria and Hop are then forced to travel around Galar to stop the Dynamax Pokémon the brothers have let loose at the Gym Stadiums. They finally confront them again at Hammerlocke Stadium, where Gloria is forced to battle one of the Legendary Pokémon the brothers had lured in. After it has been defeated, the other Legendary Pokémon appears as well, which Gloria battles and captures. Hop follows the other Legendary to the heart of Slumbering Weald, where he and Gloria have one last battle.

Trivia

 • Even though the player can choose the player character's uniform number, official artwork depicts their uniform number as "227", which can be read in Japanese as goroawase for 無事な bujina, meaning "safely". It also could be a reference to February 27, the release date of Pokémon Red and Green.
 • Pre-release media referred to Gloria as both "Gloria" and "Shield" (Japanese: シールド Shield).
