Litwick is a small, candle-like Pokémon with a purple flame atop its head, which is powered by life energy that it absorbs. Its body and two stubby arms are made primarily out of white wax. The folded, melted wax lays over its right eye and leaves only the bright yellow left eye visible. It has a small smile under a protruding upper lip.
Litwick pretends to guide people and Pokémon around by illuminating darkened areas. However, it is sucking away their life energy and leading them to the Ghost World. In the anime, the flame is shown to grow as it continually absorbs life energy and interferes with electronic devices such as Pokédexes.
In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, a group of four Litwick take residence in Serene Village's Ancient Barrow alongside a Solosis. As they feed off of scaring people, the Litwick went from village to village scaring people for nourishment, but would be driven out time and again until they eventually ran out of tricks and failed to scare anyone. Solosis would take pity on the group and created illusions to help the group scare others as they made their way to Serene Village. Visiting during the Player's summer vacation, the group would use their embers and Solosis' illusions to scare residents at night, even abducting Farfetch'd and dropping him off the next morning. While this scares the adults, the children are only made curious, and they visit the school at night to confirm rumors. This run-in leads to both Pancham and Shelmet being abducted, and the children entering Ancient Barrow to rescue the pair. After both the Litwick and Solosis' illusion of Giratina are defeated, they apologize and explain their reasons for their actions. Unexpectedly, the partner chooses to forgive the group, knowing they weren't acting on malice but having them promise to do subtle good things in exchange for their antics. Much later on in the story, a Litwick reveals that they've come forward and have been accepted into the village but are advised to keep their pranks in moderation.

Litwick, the Candle Pokémon. Litwick appear to be helping to guide the way of people by illuminating areas that are darkened, but in reality they are actually leading them to the Ghost World. They feed off the life energy of people and Pokémon, and use it as fuel for the flames on their heads.

Hitomoshi may be derived from 火点し hi-tomoshi, which literally means "lighting a lamp" but can also refer to a person who leads a funeral procession with a torch. The name can also be interpreted as 人燃し hito-moshi (to burn a man to death).
