In the anime
Blackthorn Gym appeared in two episodes of the anime.
Ash battled Clair for the Rising Badge in Fangs for Nothin'. Although he battled hard, Ash wasn't doing very well in the match for his final badge. However, before the battle could end, an alarm went off alerting Clair that somebody had stolen the Dragon Fang. She told Ash that the battle would have to continue some other time, and that more important matters had to be taken care of.
After dealing with Team Rocket and returning the Dragon Fang, Ash and Clair had a second battle in Better Eight Than Never. This time, Ash came prepared with his Snorlax and Charizard. He was much more successful than his previous attempt, and after defeating Clair's Dragonair, he earned the Rising Badge.
The Blackthorn Gym has a retractable roof, which is used when both Clair and the opponent's Pokémon can use flight in one way or another.
Trivia
- In the games, both the Generation II Cianwood Gym and the Blackthorn Gym are currently the only two gyms that require the use of an HM in order to progress. Coincidentally, both gyms require HM04, Strength.
- The Blackthorn Gym is the only gym that specializes in Template:Type2s.
- This is one of the few places in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver where the player is required to keep his or her Pokémon inside of its Poké Ball.
