Its appearance is based on that of a fully-grown lion. It has three rings on the backs of its legs, similar to Luxio (which has two) and Shinx (which has one) and has red eyes. Luxray has a spiky black mane that covers its head down to its legs. It's back legs are black and blue and it has a black tail with a star-like shape on the tip.
Luxray have extraordinary eyesight. It is so powerful that they can see through most objects, like x-ray vision.
Behavior
Luxray are extremely vicious and predatorial, although when tamed and trained correctly they can become very loyal and faithful, protecting their Trainer from danger. Abusing a Luxray can cause it to become antagonistic and vengeful towards their Trainer. Luxray need a lot of compassion and praise to maintain their satisfaction, as they are proud creatures.
A Luxray made an appearance in The Rise of Darkrai. During Alice's flashback, Alicia was running up a hill to the garden. She saw Luxray fire a Hyper Beam upon Darkrai, but Darkrai retaliated with a Dark Void, trapping Luxray into a nightmare. However, Alice played Oración, allowing it and the other effected Pokémon sleep peacefully.
Later, when the trio are traveling through Mt. Coronet, a Luxray that evolved from a Luxio they had helped earlier in their journey saved Pearl and Platinum after they were trapped by a rock slide. This same Luxray later appeared to Pearl as he was traveling to Lake Valor, and after defeating the Houndoom that was trying to burn them alive, joined him as his third Pokémon, now named Torahiko.

Luxray is one of only two second stage Template:Type2 Pokémon that was released in the same generation as its evolutionary relatives, the other being Ampharos.
Interstingly enough, both Luxray and Ampharos evolve from their previous forms at level 15 and 30.
Unlike most Electric-types, Luxray has Speed as its lowest stat. It shares this trait with Ampharos and Magnezone.
Even though it is shown attacking with its claws in the anime, it couldn't learn Scratch or any other claw-based moves until Pokémon Platinum, where a move tutor can teach it Fury Cutter.
Luxray is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 523.
Even though Luxray is renowned for its x-ray like vision, there is no attack or ability associated with it. It cannot even learn Foresight.
Luxray is based on an adult male lion, or possibly the constellation Leo, due to the fact that it resembles a lion and bears a star shape on the end of its tail.
Name origin
Luxray is derived from lux, a measure of brightness, and x-ray, referring to its x-ray eyes.
Its Japanese name is a combination of Röntgen, the physicist who discovered X-rays, and 虎 tora, tiger.
