A battle item is, as its name implies, an item given to a Pokémon during battle to enhance its stats. Like the stat-raising effects of moves like Howl and Agility, the stat rise is only temporary. These items cannot be used on a Pokémon if the specific stat is already raised by six levels.

Trivia

  • Both X Attack and X Defend appeared in the TCG as Trainer cards; however, their English language release used their Japanese names, PlusPower and Defender. Their sprites introduced in the Generation III games also indicate that they are the same item by their appearance and color.
  • Some Gym Leaders in Generation I, as well as Trainers at the Petalburg Gym, use these items. Various Trainers in Pokémon Platinum (usually School Kids and Scientists) use them occasionally.
  • In Black and White, the Japanese name of Dire Hit was changed to one one character shorter.
