Zigzagoon (Japanese: ジグザグマ Jiguzaguma) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves into Linoone starting at level 20.

Biology

Physiology

Zigzagoon looks like a brown and white raccoon. Its bristly fur alternates in layers of cream and brown, and, due to the jagged outline, the fur has a zigzag pattern. Zigzagoon’s head is brown with spiky ears and a jagged muzzle. Zigzagoon has a black ‘mask’ pattern over its brown eyes and a black nose. Zigzagoon’s feet have three claws, the forefeet colored cream and the hind feet brown, with pink paw pads on the underside. Zigzagoon also has a spiky, bristly brush tail. The upper portion of Zigzagoon's mouth is jagged in outline, and when Zigzagoon's mouth is open, two fangs can be seen on its lower jaw.

Special abilities

Since Zigzagoon have a keen sense of smell, and supported by the fact that they are curious about anything on the ground, they are able to locate and pick up items while traveling.

When the Generation IV games were introduced, Zigzagoon was given another ability. Due to the fact that it loves berries more than almost anything else, it is a complete glutton when it comes to them.

Behavior

Zigzagoon’s behavior is marked by its signature curiosity. Rubbing its nose to the ground, Zigzagoon restlessly wanders back and forth in search of something. As Zigzagoon shows an interest in everything it happens to see, it always zigs and zags, even leaving distinguishable zigzag footprints. Zigzagoon also rubs its bristly back hair against trees to leave territorial markings, and may play dead to fool foes in battle. Like real-life animals, when thirsty it will lap up water with its tongue.

Major appearances

Nicholai caught a Zigzagoon in In the Knicker of Time. It also appeared in Zig Zag Zangoose!.

Another one appeared in A Meditite Fight!.

In the Pokémon Ruby-Sapphire manga, a Zigzagoon appears in the chapter Let's Go Catch The Dumpling Thief!!. Isamu Akai's Clefairy is accused of stealing dumplings from a shrine, but it turns out that they were being eaten by a mischevious Zigzagoon.

Trivia

• Zigzagoon is one of the two Pokémon left out of the Hoenn Pokérap; the other is Relicanth. It is unknown why.
• In each region, there is a two-stage Template:Type2 Pokémon encountered early in the region. Zigzagoon is the Hoenn variation on this theme that also includes Rattata, Sentret, Bidoof, and Minezumi.
• Zigzagoon and Aipom are the only Pokémon that can have Pickup whose evolutions retain the ability.

Origin

Zigzagoon is based on the tanuki (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus). Japanese folklore and legend claims that tanuki are tricksters, masters of disguise and capable of shapeshifting, though also absent-minded and gullible. It also has similarities to ordinary raccoons.

Name origin

Zigzagoon's name appears to be a combination of zigzag, referring to its fur pattern and unusual habits, and raccoon.

Jiguzaguma may be a combination of zigzag and 洗い熊 araiguma, meaning raccoon, or 穴熊 anaguma, meaning badger. Also of note, the guma suffix is often used for mammals that resemble bears.

• Chinese (Taiwan): 蛇紋熊 Shé Wén Xióng - Literally "Snake-patterned bear", referring to the zigzag pattern in its fur, which resembles a wriggling snake.
