Trivia

  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Pawniard and its evolution.
    • The types it has are coincidentally the two types introduced in Generation II.
    • Due to their typing, Pawniard and its evolution are also the only Pokémon that have double resistance to Ghost-type.
  • Pawniard and Wailmer are the only Pokémon that can evolve that can have Pressure as their ability.
    • Coincidentally, it is as a hidden ability in both cases.

Origin

It looks similar to a knight and may be based on Arthurian legends of black knights. It may also have gained origin from the Kaijin style of Japanese monster movies, involving a humanoid creature that acts as a villain. There is also a resemblance to the Super Sentai and Kamen Rider series' suited heroes.

Name origin

Pawniard is possibly a combination of pawn, the most basic piece in chess and poignard, a lightweight dagger. It may also derive from palliard, meaning "beggar" or "thief".

Its Japanese name is likely a combination of 細切れ komagire, small pieces, and 刀 katana, sword, or 小刀 kogatana, short sword.
