Typhlosion (Japanese: バクフーン Bakphoon) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves from Quilava starting at level 36. It is the final form of Cyndaquil.

Biology

Physiology

Typhlosion, in appearance, becomes much different than its pre-evolutions; however, some resemblances remain. For instance, it is both a biped and a quadruped, like Cyndaquil and Quilava, respectively. The fiery vents on its back disappear, making way for a new ring of them around its neck and shoulders.

Typhlosion has a somewhat bearlike physique, with bulky thighs and a collar of fire around its neck. Typhlosion’s ears are thinner compared to Quilava, and lack ear insides. Typhlosion’s face, underside, arms, and legs are a shade of cream, and its back is dark blue. The fur of a Typhlosion is very coarse and highly flame-retardant, giving it an extreme resistance to heat and fire attacks. This may also be to keep it from injuring itself during battle when using attacks such as Flamethrower or Flame Wheel. On Typhlosion’s rear is a spiky, coarse fringe of its back fur. Most of the time, when its mouth is open, it has a thick tongue.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

When a Typhlosion's health drops in battle, the Blaze ability comes into play. This gives its Template:Type2 attacks a boost of 1.5 times their normal power. Typhlosion hides behind a shimmering heat haze that it creates using its intensely hot flames. It can even generate enough heat to make any object go up in flames when angered. It can also rub its blazing fur together to cause huge, devastating explosive blasts, also capable of burning anything to cinders, and its Flame Wheel is second to none.

Behavior

Its personality has dramatically changed since it was a Cyndaquil, being rather quick-tempered and making anything go up in flames when angered. It also now is a natural biped, in contrast to its pre-evolutions. Most artwork of Typhlosion display it with its mouth open, as if yelling in fury.

Habitat

File:Grassland.gif
Grassland Pokémon

Typhlosion make their nests along mountainsides and heated grasslands. However, they are rarely found in the wild, with the majority being evolved from a Cyndaquil that Professor Elm gives to the Johto region's beginning Trainers.

Diet

Typhlosion have several sharp canine teeth along their gum lines, suggesting a carnivorous diet.

In the anime

Jimmy's Typhlosion

Major appearances

Jimmy's Typhlosion

Typhlosion's first anime appearance was in the The Legend of Thunder! special, under the ownership of Jimmy. It was his starter Pokémon, which he got as a Cyndaquil from Professor Elm.

Other

Minor appearances

Typhlosion made its main series debut in Gonna Rule The School at the Pokémon Trainer's School.

Another Typhlosion appeared in Poetry Commotion under the ownership of Mr. Moore, Flannery's grandfather.

In the manga

Gold's Typhlosion

Gold's Quilava, named Exbo, evolved into Typhlosion to protect Silver, Crystal, and himself from Lugia. Afterwards, its larger size allowed it to be a method of faster travel (akin to Crystal's Meganium), and with its increased power allowed Gold to hold his own and even overpower the Masked Man.

Another Typhlosion was seen under Kimberly's ownership, displaying its fantastically destructive Blast Burn attack alongside her Meganium with its Frenzy Plant. Doing so damaged much of the surrounding landscape, as well as a large girth of the ship nearby, earning the old woman much ire.

Trivia

  • Typhlosion is so far the only final form of a Template:Type2 starter Pokémon that does not have a secondary type: Charizard is Fire/Flying while Blaziken, Infernape, and Emboar are Fire/Fighting.
  • Typhlosion has the same total base stat values (534) as Charizard and Infernape, two of the other four fully-evolved Template:Type2 starter Pokémon. The base stat totals of both Blaziken and Emboar are lower: 530 and 528 respectively.
  • Aditionally, both Typhlosion and Charizard share the same base stats distribution. They are one of two paired Pokémon that have same of base stats which do not have same in each stat, such as common Legendary Pokémon with straight-100 base stats.
  • Typhlosion is the only final form of a Fire-type starter Pokémon that can only learn Flare Blitz by breeding. Charizard, Blaziken, Infernape, and Emboar all learn it by leveling up.
    • However, Typhlosion and its pre-evolutions can learn Eruption by level-up, which is one of the highest base power Fire-type moves. It is the only Fire-type starter line that can learn this move.
      • Typhlosion also haves the highest base Speed stat among the Pokémon capable of learning Eruption, with base 100 Speed tied with Entei, and the highest base Special Attack stat among the same Pokémon not counting event-obtained Heatran.
  • Although it is a bipedal Pokémon, its body style is shared with quadrupedal Pokémon. However, in the anime, games, Pokémon Adventures, and in artwork of it in The Complete Pokémon Pocket Guide, it can walk and run on four limbs.
  • Not counting Pikachu, Typhlosion and its evolutionary line are the only starter line in the Yellow color group.

Origin

The appearance of this Pokémon may be based on a variety of mustelids. It has a long and agile body, like weasels, though it is significantly larger and thicker than its pre-evolutions, giving this Pokémon a resemblance to badgers or wolverines. It's face is reminiscent of a honey badger or an american badger.

Name origin

Typhlosion's name is a combination of typhoon and explosion. Its name is also similar to the word typhus, a Greek word meaning 'hazy' (which would describe the effect that the intense heat Typhlosion generates has on the air surrounding it), and may also be related to tephra, volcanic material. It could also come from "Typhon", a monster in Greek mythology who fathered many other monsters with his wife, Echidna, after which the animal which partly inspired the Typhlosion family is named. The first three syllables of its Japanese name spell 爆風 bakufū, blast, and the second part comes directly from typhoon.

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Tornupto From tornado and eruption.
French Typhlosion
Korean 블레이범 Blaibom A portmanteau of blaze and Bom.
Chinese (Taiwan) 火暴獸 Huŏ Bào Shòu Literally "Fire fierce beast". 火暴 Huŏ Bào can also be derived from 爆 baku of its Japanese name.
