Yamask (Japanese: デスマス Desumasu) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves into Cofagrigus starting at level 34.

Physiology

The mask of a Yamask

Yamask is a shadow-like Pokémon holding a simply designed stone face which was from its time as a human, one rather similar to that of the one in the forehead of Cofagrigus. It has two shadowy, tendril-like arms and large, red eyes.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Due to being a human long ago, it has memories of being a human. If someone wears the mask Yamask carries, they will become possessed by the Yamask in question.

Behavior

Yamask are known to have once been human, and as such, they retain memories of their former lives. Each Yamask carries a mask depicting the face it once had. Sometimes, it looks at this mask and cries, apparently in longing.

Habitat

Yamask can be found in pyramids where people have been buried.

Major appearances

Yamask made an appearance in A Night in the Nacrene City Museum!, where it was causing havoc in the Nacrene City Museum because its mask had been put on display after it accidentally dropped it while sleeping. In the end Lenora, along with Ash, Iris, Cilan and Hawes gained an understanding with it and gave its mask back and Yamask left the museum peacefully.

James's Yamask

A Yamask appeared before Team Rocket in BW025 where James proceeded to catch it.

Trivia

• According to both of its Pokédex entries, Yamasks are the spirits of deceased humans. As such, Yamask is a Ghost-type that is also a literal ghost, the first of its kind.
• Yamask's base Speed is the same as its evolution.
• Yamask and its evolution are the only pure Template:Type2 Pokémon introduced in Generation V.
• No other Pokémon has the same egg group combination as Yamask and its evolution.
• Although Yamask is able to learn Nightmare through breeding and Dream Eater through a TM, it does not learn any sleep-inducing moves.
  • It shares this trait with its evolved form, Cofagrigus.
• Yamask is the only Pokémon that is not part of the Yanma family to begin with Y.

Origin

Yamask is based on an Egyptian Ba holding a death mask.

Name origin

Yamask is possibly from 闇 yami, meaning darkness, や ya, meaning bad, or yama, the Lord of the dead in Hindu and Buddhist mythology, and mask. Desumasu could be derived from デス desu meaning death, and マスク masuku meaning mask.
