Totodile (Japanese: ワニノコ Waninoko) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves into Croconaw starting at level 18, who evolves into Feraligatr starting at level 30.

Along with Chikorita and Cyndaquil, Totodile is one of the three starter Pokémon available at the beginning of Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver.

It can also be obtained in Pokémon Emerald if the player has completed the Hoenn Pokédex and talks to Professor Birch.

Biology

Physiology

Totodile look like small, bipedal blue crocodiles (similar to its evolved forms) with red spines on their back and tail, the one on their back being larger with additional ridges next to the back spines. Totodile's head is large, with crocodilian ridges above its eyes, and much of the head’s size is composed of Totodile's snout and strong jaws. There are two visible teeth on the tip of its upper jaw, and two rows of three teeth on each side of its lower jaw. Totodile's mouth is often depicted open. On its chest is a yellow, somewhat V-shaped pattern that extends to Totodile's arms, with a line bisecting the pattern at the middle. Totodile have five sharp claws and three toes. Its eyes have red irises, and there is a dark-colored pattern around the eyes that is depicted as either dark-blue or black.

Special abilities

Despite their small size, Totodile are very powerful, especially when underwater. Totodile have a very large set of jaws for a Pokémon its size, just a playful nip can be painful. It can also bite with ice cold fangs. Like the other Template:Type2 starter Pokémon, the power of Totodile's Water-type attacks get stronger when in a pinch.

Behavior

Totodile have a habit of biting anything they see, including their trainers. It is unwise to turn one's back on a Totodile. Totodile also have a genuine playfulness about them, they are always ready for a good laugh. There is a tough side to Totodile though, as they can quickly react to difficult situations in a battle and bounce back with boosts of their water-type moves.

Totodile live close to the water. Being reptilian, they prefer tropical climates and are typically found around large rivers and ocean shores.

Diet

Due to their strong jaws and sharp teeth, it is most likely that they are a carnivorous species.

In An Egg Scramble!, Khoury's Totodile would not eat its food but Brock crushed up some Chesto Berries and Totodile would eat it.

Ash's Totodile

Ash later captured a Totodile in The Totodile Duel, after battling for it with Misty. Ash's Totodile, who had a very playful personality, remained with him throughout Ash's Johto adventures, before being left in Professor Oak's lab.

Other

A Totodile that belonged to Professor Elm went missing in Don't Touch That 'dile. That Totodile found Team Rocket and chomped down on Jessie's hair. Ash and co. managed to get the Totodile back to Prof. Elm.

Another Totodile appeared in An Egg Scramble!, under the ownership of Khoury. It made subsequent appearances in A Rivalry to Gible On! and then later in Bagged Then Tagged! where it evolved into a Croconaw.

Minor appearances

Marina has a Feraligatr nicknamed Wani-Wani that evolved from a Totodile that she received from Prof. Elm in The Legend of Thunder!.

A Totodile appeared in Up Close and Personable!.

Totodile had a minor role in Arceus and the Jewel of Life alongside the other Johto starters, Chikorita and Cyndaquil.

In the Magical Pokémon Journey manga

In Magical Pokémon Journey, Pikachu and Clefairy meet a Totodile in The Happiness Clover. Totodile tricks Pikachu and Clefairy into finding him a four-leaf clover, though in the end he admits to tricking them and they become friends.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

In Pokémon Adventures, Silver stole a Totodile from Professor Elm's lab. It was then able to evolve into Croconaw after destroying a built-in iron ball trap with Exbo's help, but being left in a coma after his trainer and Gold's defeat against the Masked Man left it unable to evolve until the fight with an outraged Lugia enticed all three of the Johto starter Pokémon to evolve. With its increased strength and Surf ability, it is the major mainstay of Silver's team.

In the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blazing Exploration Team manga

In the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blazing Exploration Team manga, an adaptation of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, the main character is a Totodile, who teams up with Chimchar to form Team Blaze.

Little but feisty is the best description for these Water-type Pokémon. The first thing they do when they see something move is latch onto it with their powerful jaws. Totodile was one of the three Pokémon that Professor Elm offered to Trainers in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. They evolve into Croconaw.

Trivia

• Totodile is the tallest and heaviest unevolved Water-type starter Pokémon.
• Totodile, along with Turtwig, is one of two starter Pokémon which evolve at level 18, the highest level for a starter Pokémon to evolve.
• In Generation IV, Totodile is the only Pokémon that can learn Dragon Claw by breeding, but cannot through TM. However, this is reversed in Generation V.
• So far, Totodile is the only Water-type starter Pokemon that does not have a spherically shaped head.

Totodile is based on a baby crocodilian.

Name origin

Totodile's name is a combination of the words tot and crocodile. Its Japanese name can be taken to mean 鰐の子, child of a crocodile/alligator.
