Synopsis
After their adventures in Twist Mountain, Ash and friends decide to stay at Don George's Battle Club in Astilbe Town. Before checking in they see a Double Battle between Kensō and Shamus. Kensō commands Mienshao to use Drain Punch on Heatmor and Watchog to use Slam on Emboar. Both attacks hit their mark. The two Pokémon get up easily and dust themselves off. Next Shamus commands Emboar to use Hammer Arm, knocking down Kensō's Pokémon. Next Shamus asks Heatmor to use Flame Burst. The battle ends with Shamus being the victor.
After the battle Ash shares his thought on Shamus's victory. Iris hears Shamus demanding to see all and have one of Kensō's Pokémon. She runs over and tells Shamus that he has no right to take Pokémon even if someone lost a battle to him. Cilan tells Shamus he shouldn't do that, but Shamus just says to "Lay off". Then Don George comes to compliment Shamus on his battle. Knowing he couldn't take Pokémon in front of Don George, Shamus leaves.
When both Don George and Shamus are gone, Iris asks Kensō why he battled Shamus. Kensō admits that he told Shamus he didn't want to, but Shamus said he wanted to get his hands on powerful Pokémon.
At dinner Tepig sees Shamus and recognizes him as his former trainer. It runs over to him, but Shamus didn't recognize it. Ash apologizes and asks Tepig to come, but he doesn't leave. Then, Iris reminds Ash that Tepig was abandoned by its original trainer. Then Ash remembers meeting Tepig in Accumula Town. Ash goes to inform Shamus, but all he says that he was lucky Ash gave him a break. Iris and Ash both say it was wrong to throw a Pokémon away and demands he apologize to Tepig. Shamus refuses and throws Tepig to Ash. Cilan then says he's a judge connoisseur, and gives Shamus a fair trial. During the trial Shamus said he left Tepig for his own good. He said forcing a weak Pokémon into battle would be worse than abandoning it. Ash testified by pointing out that Tepig was tied up. Shamus argued that Tepig kept following him. Cilan couldn't decide whether Shamus was guilty or not. Then Don George suggested a battle to settle the argument. Shamus agreed only if it was a double battle. Ash told Shamus once the won,he would have to apologize to Tepig. Then Snivy comes over and volunteers to battle with Tepig. Cilan reminds Ash that Snivy had trouble with her trainer. Ash allows Snivy to battle, and the two trainers decide to battle in the morning.
Later that night Tepig reminisces Shamus abandoning it. The flashback shows Tepig going after Shamus while trying to leave. Then as Shamus ties Tepig to a post,he's at the brink of tears. Tepig starts to tear up,but when it hears Ash calling,it shakes away the tears. Ash tells Tepig that he and Snivy want to train. Tepig just sighs. Cilan tells Ash that Tepig may not want to battle his former trainer. Iris said after his actions, Tepig was being "too nice." Then Snivy goes up to Tepig and slaps him with Vine Whip. Tepig then agrees to battle.
The next day the battle between Shamus and Ash proceeded. Shamus used his Fire Warrios, Embaor and Heatmor. Ash used Tepig and Snivy. Though Snivy is ready, Tepig still is skeptical. Ash commands Snivy to use Leaf Storm on Emboar, but he dodges. Ash tells Tepig to use Flamethrower on Heatmor, but Tepig can't bring itself to do it. Then Emboar uses Hammer Arm on Tepig. Ash tells Tepig he understands. Then Shamus chuckles and say whenever he abandons a Pokémon he makes it think he's upset so they won't follow him. This makes immobilized by sadness. Snivy tries to help Tepig, but she fails. Ash then asks Snivy to cover for Tepig. Snivy uses Attract on Emboar along with Vine Whip. Shamus snaps Emboar out of it by having Heatmor use Fury Swipes on its team mate. Then Emboar uses Flamethrower and Heatmor to use Fire Spin. Snivy dodges, but the two attacks hit Tepig. Then Heatmor uses Fury Swipes and Emboar to use Heat Crash on Snivy. Snivy manages to get up, and tries to get Tepig to battle. Ash encourages Tepig as well, and he decides to battle. Tepig uses Flame Charge hitting both of Shamus's Pokémon. Shamus is not very impressed. The two Pokémon get up easily. After that Emboar uses Flare Blitz and Heatmor to used Fire Spin to make what Cilan called "Super Flare Blitz." Snivy protects Tepig, but she ends up unable to battle. She decides to stay and watch her teammate battle. Everyone encourages Tepig. At that moment Tepig evolved into Pignite. Shamus says that Pignite still had no chance of winning. Then Ash commands Pignite to use his new move, Fire Pledge. He hits both Emboar and Heatmor. Finally Ash tells Pignite to finish with Flame Charge. Shamus's Pokémon are knocked out and Ash is the victor. Everyone congratulates Pignite, and Cilan reaches the verdict that Ash was right. After recalling his Pokémon, Shamus goes over to Pignite, and apologizes. He also asks Pignite to come back to his team. Pignite responded by blowing flames in Shamus's face. Ash told Shamus that Pignite is "one of the gang." Then Shamus runs away saying "I won't forget this!" The episode ends with everyone running toward Pignite, and the narrator saying "Our heroes resume their travel toward Icirrus City".
