Oddish (Japanese: ナゾノクサ Nazonokusa) is a dual-type Grass/Poison Pokémon.

It evolves into Gloom starting at level 21, which evolves into Vileplume when exposed to a Leaf Stone or into Bellossom when exposed to a Sun Stone.

Biology

Physiology

Oddish resembles a plant bulb with round feet. Its body is blue in coloration, and it has beady red eyes. It has five green leaves sprouting from its head with the top of the center leaf bending backwards.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Oddish is able to restore health in moonlight. Its leaves are prehensile; that is, they can be used as limbs. The Oddish in Foul Weather Friends could climb a wire cage and catch a Hoppip being blown away by only using its leaves. This ability is first seen in Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village, in which an Oddish catches Misty's tear with one of its leaves.

Behavior

Oddish planted in the ground

Oddish searches for fertile, nutrient-rich soil, then plants itself. During the daytime, while it is planted, its feet are thought to change shape and become similar to the roots of trees. Oddish grows by absorbing moonlight, and the more fertile the soil, the glossier its leaves become. As only its leaves are exposed above ground when it is buried into the soil, in order to avoid detection by enemies, it is said to look like a clump of weeds. It is also said to scream loudly if anyone tries to yank it out. Oddish is nocturnal, and awakes upon being exposed to moonlight. Upon awakening, it roams about actively, walking nearly 1000 feet and scattering its seeds.

Oddish live in grassy plains, and can also be found in tropical areas such as jungles and swamps, where the ground is rich in nutrients. They are very common, being native to Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh. They have also been recorded living in White Forest in Unova.

Diet

Oddish most likely absorb some nutrients from the ground when they are buried.

Major appearances

An Oddish owned by Mariah wanted to fly with its Hoppip friends in Foul Weather Friends, even trying to color itself pink like a Hoppip. While it never flies, it still proves powerful enough to defeat Team Rocket on its own.

In Whichever Way the Wind Blows, Ash and his friends came across three Oddish belonging to Steven who used them to study the evolution of Grass Pokémon from that area. Multiple of them also appeared in the same episode.

Minor appearances

Oddish are commonly found in the anime. Most of the time they play the victim and are usually being chased or attacked.

Misty attempted to catch an Oddish which was in Melanie's care in Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village despite not being a Water type because she thought it was cute, but she was prevented from doing so by a Bulbasaur. Misty later apologized for trying to catch it while in the Hidden Village. It reappeared in a flashback in Bulbasaur... the Ambassador!.

An Oddish appeared in Electric Shock Showdown under the ownership of an unnamed Trainer.

An Oddish appeared in Battle Aboard the St. Anne.

An Oddish was seen in a Pokémon Center in Hypno's Naptime.

An Oddish also appeared in Pokémon Fashion Flash.

Oddish appeared in a fantasy in Dig Those Diglett!.

Oddish also appeared in Sparks Fly for Magnemite, The Kangaskhan Kid, The March of the Exeggutor Squad, A Chansey Operation and The Ultimate Test, The Breeding Center Secret and Pallet Party Panic.

James's fiancée, Jessiebelle, had an Oddish when she was a little girl, before it evolved into a Gloom and soon after, into a Vileplume which first appeared in Holy Matriony!.

Multiple Oddish were among the Pokémon seen at Professor Oak's Laboratory in Showdown at the Po-ké Corral and Showdown at the Oak Corral.

In The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga

Ash owns an Oddish in the manga The Electric Tale of Pikachu. It is one of the few Pokémon that Ash owns in the manga but not in the anime.

Oddish first appears in the chapter You Gotta Have Friends. Its capture is not shown, instead, it appears with several of Ash's other Pokémon with a note explaining that "Ash has been very busy since the last comic".

Oddish was one of the Pokémon seen during the mass migration of Pokémon at the Seafoam Islands (Chapter 063).

Trivia

• In Generation II, Bill's grandfather asks the player to bring him a round, green Pokémon that has leaves growing on its head, which is obviously Oddish. However, in those games, and in subsequent generations, Oddish's body (unless it is Shiny) is blue. The mistake might have been a translation error caused by the ambiguity of the word "aoi", which can mean both blue and green. This is fixed in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
• Oddish has a scientific name: Oddium Wanderus, given in its FireRed Pokédex entry. The only other Pokémon with a known scientific name is Kabutops, with Kabutops maximis.
  • Oddish's alias name is アルキメンデス Arukimendesu, as stated in the Japanese version of FireRed as well as Red and Green Pokédex entry. This can either be seen as a corruption of Archimedes, the Greek mathematician, or as a direct reference to a popular Japanese instant noodles brand Archimendes that literally means instant noodles on the go. The latter may reference Oddish's appearance when walking.
• In Pokémon Platinum, Oddish is the one of the few Pokémon not in the Sinnoh Pokédex, and not introduced in Generation IV, to have a new sprite. Muk, Meowth, Hitmonlee, Ninetales, Krabby, Primeape, and Registeel are the others.
• Oddish is the first Pokémon in National Pokédex order to be part of a branched evolutionary family.
• Oddish can be seen as a parallel to Bellsprout. Both of them are Grass/Poison-type Generation I Pokémon and are part of a three-stage evolutionary line, who evolve into their evolved forms at or above level 21, and whose second evolutionary event utilizes a Leaf Stone. Oddish is exclusive to Pokémon Red and FireRed, while Bellsprout is exclusive to Pokémon Blue and LeafGreen, with both Pokémon found in the same locations in their respective versions. Additionally, both can be found at White Forest in Pokémon White, and both Pokémon have had their Egg designs revealed.

Oddish is a combination of odd and radish (a vegetable) and a pun on oddish, meaning "somewhat odd."

Nazonokusa literally means "enigmatic grass" (謎の草 nazo no kusa).
