Spheal (Japanese: タマザラシ Tamazarashi) is a dual-type Ice/Water Pokémon.

It evolves into Sealeo starting at level 32, which evolves into Walrein starting at level 44.

Biology

Physiology

Spheals are round, baby seal-like Pokémon. Their plushy fur is a baby blue color, with several white spots on its back and a beige underside. They have circular eyes, small tusks protruding from their upper jaw, stubby ears, beige flippers and a little flat tail. Curiously, its rounded, spherical appearance makes it bear resemblance to a balloon, or a ball.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Spheal, and its evolution family, Sealeo and Walrein, are the only known Pokémon that can learn Ice Ball by level.

Behavior

Spheal always travels by rolling around on its ball-like body, for it is much faster than walking and because its body is poorly shaped for swimming. Despite this, it may dive into the sea, in which case its fur keeps it from feeling cold. When groups of Spheal eat, they all clap at once to show their pleasure. Because of this, their mealtimes are noisy.

Habitat

Spheal live in the Arctic seas and appear in Hoenn and Sinnoh.

Major appearances

Spheal first appeared in The Spheal of Approval alongside its evolved form. Both of them were at the Slateport City Oceanic Museum.

Minor appearances

A Spheal of North Petalburg appeared in A Double Dilemma.

A Spheal also appeared in Destiny Deoxys along with Sealeo and Walrein.

Spheal made a small appearance in The Rise of Darkrai as one of the Pokémon Darkrai hit with a Dark Void.

Multiple Spheal made brief cameo appearances in Giratina and the Sky Warrior.

A group of Spheal also appeared in Leading a Stray!.

A photograph of three Spheal appeared in The Four Seasons of Sawsbuck!.

Hitting a Spheal at this time will send it to a Sealeo's nose, earning five times the points from just bouncing the Poké Ball.

Trivia

  • Spheal's evolution line, along with Dewgong, are the only Pokémon to have a "triple resistance," thanks to the Thick Fat Ability.
  • Spheal can be seen as a parallel to Seel. Spheal is an Ice/Water-type Pokémon, while Seel evolves into a Water/Ice-type Pokémon. Spheal is exclusive Pokémon Pearl, while Seel is exclusive Pokémon Diamond, with both found in the same locations in their respective versions. Additionally, both can only be obtained by breeding their evolved forms in Pokémon Platinum. Both Pokémon also appear to be based on Pinnipeds.
  • Spheal's evolution line are the only Pokémon with the Water/Ice combination to have Ice as its primary type.

Origin

Spheal is based on a seal with spherical shape.

Name origin

Spheal is a combination of sphere (referring to its round shape) and seal.

Tamazarashi is a combination of 球 tama (sphere) and 海豹 azarashi (seal).
