Wally (Japanese: ミツル Mitsuru) is one of the two rival characters in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, the other being Brendan/May. He is the first rival not to be the player's first battle, and the first rival not to have a starter Pokémon.
Wally is a young, sickly boy who just moved to Petalburg City. Despite his illness, his dream is to train Pokémon.
His illness is never explained, but his symptoms appear to clear up in clean air, suggesting that it may be asthma.
In the games
Role
Wally is a sick young boy who asks Norman, the Petalburg Gym Leader, to help him catch a Pokémon before he moves to Verdanturf Town to live with his aunt and uncle.
Norman allowed his child, the player of Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald to assist Wally, and loaned Wally a Zigzagoon.
Using this, Wally was able to capture a Ralts. This is the catching tutorial of Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. Ironically, it is the player who is teaching Wally to catch Pokémon.
Wally shows up again later in Mauville City, pleading with his uncle to let him challenge Wattson. He battles the player to prove his strength, but loses. He decides his uncle is right but says he will train to get stronger.
Wally eventually runs away from home and challenges the player at the end of Victory Road in Ever Grande City, seemingly totally recovered from his illness. He remains there, and it is possible to fight him several times per day.
Pokémon
This listing is for Wally's Pokémon in the video games in which he has appeared.

Quotes
- "Um… I… I'd like to get a Pokémon, please…
- "I'm going to go stay with my relatives in Verdanturf Town. I thought I would be lonely by myself, so I wanted to take a Pokémon along. But I've never caught a Pokémon before. I don't know how…
- "Oh, wow! A Pokémon!
- "Oh, wow! Thank you!
- "<Player>… Would you really come with me?
- "<Player>… Pokémon hide in tall grass like this, don't they? Please watch me and see if I can catch one properly. …Whoa!
- "I did it… It's my… My Pokémon! <Player>, thank you! Let's go back to the Gym!
- "Thank you, yes, it did. Here's your Pokémon back. <Player>, thank you for coming along with me. You two are why I was able to catch my Pokémon. I promise I'll take really good care of it. Oh! My mom's waiting for me, so I have to go! Bye, <player>!
- Before battle
- "Aww, Uncle, please? I want to challenge this Gym and see how much better I've become. Please? May I, please?"
- "I'm not pushing it. If I combine forces with Ralts, we can beat anyone!"
- "Oh! Hi, <player>! I've gotten a lot stronger since we met. <Player>, I want you and my Uncle to understand that. <Player>, please, will you have a battle with me?"
- Yes: "<Player>, thank you. Okay… Here I come!"
- No: "Oh… If you won't battle me, <player>, my Uncle won't know that I've become really strong."
- When defeated
- "I lost…"
- After being defeated
- "Uncle… I'll go back to Verdanturf…"
- "<Player>, thank you. Being a Trainer is tough, isn't it? It's not enough just to have Pokémon and make them battle. That isn't what being a real Trainer is about."
- "Oh, hello, <player>! I just wanted to tell you that my Uncle bought me a PokéNav! Now I can get in touch with you anytime, <player>!"
- Before battle
- "Hi! <Player>! I bet you're surprised to see me here! I made it all the way here, and it's all thanks to you! <Player>, losing to you that time made me stronger! But I'm not going to lose anymore! I'm going to win! For the Pokémon who gave me courage and strength! Okay… Here I come! "
- When defeated
- "Wow! <Player>, you are strong, after all!"
- After being defeated
- "I couldn't beat you today, <player>, but one of these days, I'll catch up to you!"
Wanda's house
- "I lost to you, <player>, but I'm not feeling down anymore. Because I have a new purpose in life. Together with my Ralts, I'm going to challenge Pokémon Gyms and become a great Trainer. Please watch me, <player>. I'm going to be stronger than you. When I do, I'm going to challenge you to another battle."

Trivia
- Though he is never classified as a "rival" in the games themselves, Wally essentially takes the place of Brendan/May as the player's rival after he/she decides to help with Professor Birch's studies rather than be a competitive Trainer.
- He shares the same Chinese name with Dawn.
- In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Wally challenges the player near the exit of Victory Road. However in Emerald he is met after crossing the first bridge.
- It is possible for the capture tutorial to end with Ralts fainting. This can only happen if Zigzagoon is generated with 11 Attack, and the wild Ralts has a nature that lowers Defense, an IV of 3 or less in HP, and 5 or less in Defense. With all this, Zigzagoon can do a maximum of 10 damage with its first Tackle, and after Growl is used on it, 7 with its second. This makes for a total of 17 damage, just enough to knock out Ralts. However, the game continues on as if it had been caught. The probability of this occurring is (182/800)*(4/25)*(4/32)*(6/32)*(5/16)*(7/16), or about 1 in 8574 slightly more then a Shiny Pokemon.
- It is also possible for Wally to catch a Shiny Ralts in the tutorial. However, it will not stay shiny for the later battles.
- Wally is the first rival that the player cannot name under any circumstances. This does not count Brendan and May, as they are also player characters, and thus the player can name them if they are chosen.
Names
Language | Name | Origin |
---|---|---|
Japanese | ミツル Mitsuru | 蔓 Tsuru, vine. Can mean "growing", "docile". |
English | Wally | Can mean "ruler of the army" or "foreigner" as a diminutive of Walter or Wallace, respectively. |
French | Timmy | Probably refers to the word "Timid"- which describes how Wally acts. |
German | Heiko | German form of the English name "Henry". |
Italian | Lino | |
Spanish | Blasco | |
Korean | 민진 Min Jin | 민/閔 Min is a Korean surname, but 閔 also means "mourn, grieve" as well as "urge on, incite", while 진 Jin in turn could mean 進/晉 "progression"; together it may reference Wally's story. Curiously, 민 min also means 玟/珉 "jade" while 진 jin could be 榛 "hazel"; two particular shades of green which are similar to Wally's color pallet. |
Chinese (Mandarin) | 小光 Xiǎo Guāng | From 光 mitsuru. Literally "young light." |
