* Spheal can be seen as a parallel to Seel. Spheal is an -type Pokémon, while Seel evolves into a Water/Ice-type Pokémon. In Generation IV, Spheal is exclusive to Pokémon Pearl, while Seel is exclusive to Pokémon Diamond, with both found in the same locations in their respective versions. Additionally, both can only be obtained by breeding their evolved forms in Pokémon Platinum. Both Pokémon also appear to be based on Pinnipeds.
* Spheal's evolution line are the only Pokémon with the Water/Ice combination to have Ice as its primary type.

Spheal is a spherical, seal-like Pokémon with a short, flat tail. Its plushy fur is light blue with several white spots of various sizes on its back. This covering of fluffy fur protects Spheal from the cold. It has black, circular eyes, small tusks protruding from its upper jaw, and small, rounded ears. Its stubby flippers and its underside are both beige. When happy or cheerful, such as when eating in a group, this Pokémon will clap its fins. Because its body is poorly shaped for swimming and can only walk slowly, it moves primarily by rolling across ice floes. It can even coat itself in ice while rolling to use its former signature move, Ice Ball. This Pokémon lives in and around the sea.
Glacia of the Elite Four has a Spheal that she uses, along with a Snorunt, to try to open Regice's seal to no avail. Several other Spheal are seen throughout following chapters.
Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire: Spheal stars in the Bonus Field Whiscash or Pelipper takes the player to. They will swim in the pool and occasionally try to climb up the ice slide. Hitting a Spheal at this time will send it to a Sealeo's nose, earning five times the points from just bouncing the Poké Ball.
Pokédex entries
This Pokémon was unavailable prior to Generation III.
Spheal is much faster rolling than walking to get around. When groups of this Pokémon eat, they all clap at once to show their pleasure. Because of this, their mealtimes are noisy.
Spheal always travels by rolling around on its ball-like body. When the season for ice floes arrives, this Pokémon can be seen rolling about on ice and crossing the sea.
