Teru-sama

Teru-sama (Japanese: カビチュウ Kabichū) is an unused item in the Generation II games. Therefore, it is considered a glitch in these games.

Purpose

The Teru-sama is akin to Missingno. in the Generation I games; it was created by the Game Freak developers as a filler for the empty spaces in the internal item list of the games' ROM. Beyond this purpose, it can be sold for $19660.

Acquisition

By modifying the Bag's item data to include items with certain index numbers or by performing the Celebi Egg glitch with a move's index number that matches the index number of the item, the player can obtain a Teru-sama. There are 29 variations of it in Pokémon Gold and Silver and 25 in Pokémon Crystal, with three of them having unique effects in all games (when forced to have a Use button).

The following Teru-sama become exclusive Pokémon Crystal key items when traded from Pokémon Gold and Silver.

These four Teru-sama, when viewed in Pokémon Stadium 2, show up as the exclusive item from Pokémon Crystal, even if the games connected to the Transfer Pak are Pokémon Gold and Silver.

In all the Generation II games, Teru-sama with index numbers 0x06 and 0x38 actually have an effect after being modified to include the Use option onto them, which reveals that they are actually leftover items from the Generation I games.

• Teru-sama 0x06 works as a faulty version of the old Town Map.
• Teru-sama 0x38 is the Poké Flute and works exactly the same; however, the audio only plays if used on a sleeping Pokémon outside of battle. It also does not affect the sleeping Snorlax in Vermilion City.

Name origin

Teru-sama, as the English name, is likely a reference to Teruki Murakawa, a programmer who appears listed on the staff of Pokémon Gold and Silver and Pokémon Crystal under "US Version Staff".

Its Japanese name, カビチュウ Kabichū, could be a corruption of ガービッジ gābijji, a gairaigo for "garbage". Since it is a placeholder for item data, with no otherwise useful purpose, it can refer to ごみ gomi (also commonly spelled in katakana as ゴミ), the Japanese equivalent of garbage in programming jargon, although ごみ is used to refer to municipal solid waste as well. Of note is that カビ kabi is part of Snorlax's Japanese name, カビゴン Kabigon, while チュウ chū is part of the Japanese names of Pichu, Pikachu, and Raichu.
