Trivia
- The prototype name for Dragonair was "Dragyn," a play on the word "dragon."
- Dragonair is one of the only Pokémon who shrinks when it evolves, alongside Gloom into Bellossom, Porygon into Porygon2, and Haunter into Gengar.
- Despite being said to be able to change the weather as one of its natural abilities, Dragonair needs to use TMs to learn Hail, Sunny Day, Rain Dance, and Sandstorm.
- Also, it can not learn Fly, despite the PokeDex saying Dragonair have been seen flying.
Origin
It appears to be based on sea serpents or lóng, traditional Chinese dragons who bring good luck.
Name origin
Dragonair's name appears to be a combination of dragon and air, referring to its ability to change the weather, or "lair", the home of a dragon. It may also be a play on the word debonair. Hakuryū could be taken to mean 白竜, white dragon. Hakuryu was also the name of the dragonlike companion of Hakai from the legend of the journey to the west in Buddhist lore.
