Falkner (Japanese: ハヤト Hayato) is the Gym Leader of Violet City's Gym, known officially as the Violet Gym. He hands out the Zephyr Badge to trainers who defeat him. He specializes in Flying-type Pokémon.
In the anime
Falkner's only anime appearance was in the episode Fighting Flyer with Fire. His Japanese voice actor is 石田彰 Akira Ishida, his Latin-American Spanish actor is Eduardo Garza and his English voice actor is Matthew Mitler.
When Ash's Pikachu gets stolen by Team Rocket, Falkner arrives and rescues Pikachu with the help of his Pidgeot. He flies around on a glider, yearning to be as close to Flying Pokémon as he possibly can be. He is usually seen with his Hoothoot on his shoulder.
Falkner has a self-righteous attitude when it comes to Pokémon training, which tends to anger Ash. Falkner also expresses an intense dislike for the prejudice against the Flying-types' weakness to Electric-types, but proves a slight hypocrisy as he criticizes Ash's poor choice of using Chikorita (weak to Flying-types) in their match.
The Violet City Gym itself is a very tall, spiral-shaped building. Falkner has his matches on the roof of the Gym.
Falkner has many students who chant in unison during his battles.
Ash was able to win the Zephyr Badge, despite his Charizard's wing being severely injured during the match.

In the games
Falkner's title is "The Elegant Master of Flying Pokémon". Falkner inherited the Gym from his father, who is never seen but apparently on the road.
Falkner is adored as a cool and handsome trainer, but it's said that his father is even more cool and more handsome. Falkner battles using his father's cherished bird Pokémon, and aspires to be the greatest bird master.
His gym is relatively simplistic, and is filled with bird cages.
Trainers in his gym: Bird Keeper Abe, Bird Keeper Rod.
In addition to the Zeyphrbadge, Falkner gives out TM31, Mud-Slap.

Quotes
"I'm Falkner, The Violet Pokémon Gym leader! People say you can clip flying-type Pokémon's wings with a jolt of electricity... I won't allow such insults to bird Pokémon! I'll show you the real power of the magnificent bird Pokémon!"
"Darn! My dad's cherished bird Pokémon... All right. Take this. It's the official Pokémon League Zephyr Badge."
In the Pokémon Special manga
In Pokémon Special, Falkner is a police officer. Believing that Gold is a Pokémon thief, he arrests him briefly before learning better from Professor Elm.
Despite the inconvenience, Gold catches a Skarmory for him. With it, Falkner was able to pass the Gym Leader exam.
Falkner's father was the previous leader of the Violet City Gym. The father is speculated to be Hayate.
He uses Poké Balls that have been turned into boomerangs by attatching Skarmory's shed feathers to their sides.

Trivia
- His Japanese Leader title is 大空を舞うサムライ.
- Falkner's right eye is always covered up by his hair (but scenes from the anime prove he has two eyes in that canon).
- Falkner is the only Gym Leader yet that is encountered first by players that does not use Template:Type2 Pokémon. Ironically, one of the Template:Type2's weaknesses is Rock-type moves.
- Falkner is the only Gym Leader, besides Brock in Generation I, who gives out a TM that contains a move that is not of his Gym's specialty type.
- Falkner's Pidgeotto is clearly underleveled; it is impossible for a Pidgeotto to be level 9. However, level 9 Pidgeotto can be captured in Pokémon Yellow to parallel the events of the Pokémon anime (Ash catches a Pidgeotto in Viridian Forest).
- Zexion, a character who is also voiced by Akira Ishida in Japan, seems to have a similar hairstyle as Falkner.
