Thunderbolt (Japanese: １０まんボルト 100,000 Volts) is a damage-dealing Electric-type move introduced in Generation I. It was TM24 in Generation I before losing its status in Generation II. It returned to being TM24 from Generation III to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and was TM36 in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!. In Pokémon Sword and Shield, it is TR08.

It can be upgraded to the special Z-Move Stoked Sparksurfer by Alolan Raichu holding Aloraichium Z, and to the special Z-Move 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt by Pikachu in a cap holding Pikashunium Z.

Effect

Generation I

Thunderbolt does damage and has a 10% chance of paralyzing the target. Thunderbolt cannot paralyze Electric-type Pokémon.

Generation II to V

Thunderbolt can now paralyze Electric-type Pokémon.

Thunderbolt can be used as the second move of a Pokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 4 bonus appeal points if Charge was used in the previous turn.

Generation VI onwards

Thunderbolt's power was decreased from 95 to 90. It can no longer paralyze Electric-type Pokémon once again, due to them now being immune to paralysis.

Thunderbolt can be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, with the user gaining an extra three appeal points if Charge was used in the prior turn.

In Pokémon UNITE, Thunderbolt is Pikachu's second move obtained at level 6 by upgrading Electroweb into it instead of Volt Tackle. The user attacks with a strong electric blast at a designated area; damaging and stunning enemies in the area for 1.1s. At level 13, its damage is increased.

Description

• In Pokémon Red and Green, the battle effect for Thunderbolt contains several more, shorter flashes compared to the animation in the international Pokémon Red and Blue. The move animation was likely toned down to prevent epileptic seizures.
• In some copies of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, using Thunderbolt or Thunder may cause the game to freeze during the moves' animation sequences. This, however, can be prevented by turning off the Battle effects in the options menu.
  • In Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald, the sound of Thunderbolt or Thunder may get stuck until the game resets.
• While Thunderbolt is depicted crashing down on the opponent in the handheld games, its depiction in the console games is more akin to how it is depicted in the anime, as the bolt goes straight toward the opponent. Despite this change, its description still stated "a strong electric blast crashes down on the target" until Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
• As revealed in Climbing the Walls!, Thunderbolt is Ash's favorite move.
• Because it is a staple in Pikachu's moveset since the very fifth episode, Thunderbolt is one of the most, if not the most, featured move throughout the entire anime.
• Thunderbolt's Japanese name, １０まんボルト, corresponds with the information present in some of Raichu's Pokédex entries, which state its electric bursts can reach and, in some cases, even exceed 100,000 volts.
• Thunderbolt is the only move that can be upgraded into multiple exclusive Z-Moves: Alolan Raichu's Stoked Sparksurfer and Pikachu's 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt.
• Thunderbolt is among the three attacks enhanced into "new" moves in the Pokémon Adventures manga, the others being Razor Leaf and Thunder.
