Water Pledge (Japanese: みずのちかい Water Oath) is a damage-dealing Water-type move introduced in Generation V. Prior to Generation VII, only Water-type starter Pokémon and their evolutions could learn this move. It is TM145 in Generation IX.
Effect
This move effect may be in need of research. Reason: Does it work in tera raid battles? You can discuss this on the talk page. |
Generation V
Water Pledge inflicts damage. It has a regular power of 50.
When two allies attempt to use Water Pledge and either Fire Pledge or Grass Pledge on the same turn, the ally moving first will not itself use a move, but instead the ally moving second will use a combined attack with a power of 150 and an additional effect immediately after it:
- If Water Pledge and Fire Pledge are used in the same turn, the ally moving second will use Water Pledge with a power of 150, and create a rainbow on the user's side of the field for four turns. The rainbow doubles the probability of additional effects taking place for moves used by that side of the field (including the chance of flinching caused by King's Rock and Razor Fang, but not including Secret Power); this effect is cumulative with Serene Grace for chances to cause a stat change or inflict a status, but not for chances to cause flinching. Due to the way certain secondary effects are handled, this can lead to an overflow glitch.
- If Water Pledge and Grass Pledge are used in the same turn, the ally moving second will use Grass Pledge with a power of 150, and create a swamp on the target's side of the field for four turns. This swamp quarters the Speed of all Pokémon on that side of the field.
If a Pokémon uses one Pledge move and a partner has selected another Pledge move, but none of its partners are able to use their selected Pledge move that turn (e.g. paralysis, Sky Drop, etc.), no move will be executed.
Water Pledge is unaffected by a held Water Gem (and will not consume it). If a combined move is used, it will always receive the same-type attack bonus no matter which Pokémon is the one executing it, or what type the combined move is.
Generation VI onwards
Water Pledge's regular power changed from 50 to 80. In addition, Water Pledge does not work in Sky Battles.
Generation VIII
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
Water Pledge cannot be selected in a battle.

By Move Tutor
Various Move Tutors can teach Water Pledge to any Water-type starter Pokémon of any evolutionary stage. From Generation VII onward, Move Tutors will also teach Water Pledge to the Water-type elemental monkeys. From Generation V to VII, Move Tutors will only teach this move to Pokémon with maximized friendship.
The Move Tutors who teach this move are:
- BW: a man in the house to the right of the market in Driftveil City.
- B2W2: a man outside of the Pokémon World Tournament building.
- XY: a man in Laverre City.
- ORAS: a man in a shop in Mauville City.
- SMUSUM: a man on the second level of Hau'oli City's mall.
- SwSh: a man in Hammerlocke.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series
Water Pledge deals damage. In Super Mystery Dungeon, when Water Pledge is used with Fire Pledge in an Alliance, the user's party will get the rainbow condition for five turns, which increases the probability of secondary effects taking place. When used with Grass Pledge, the enemies in the same room will get the swamp condition for five turns, which reduces their Speed stat.
In Rescue Team DX, Alliances are no longer present. Instead, when Water Pledge is used with a teammate in a position from which it can use Fire Pledge (that is, also adjacent to the enemy), Water Pledge's power will be increased and the teammates in the same room will get the Rainbow condition. 1 PP of Fire Pledge will also be used (and the teammate with Fire Pledge can still make another move on that turn). Water Pledge's effect with Grass Pledge will only activate when Grass Pledge is used.

Trivia
- Starting in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Silvally is programmed to be able to be taught Water Pledge. However, the Move Tutor will only ever offer to teach it Grass Pledge, making Water Pledge and Fire Pledge unable to be learned legitimately.
