Focus Energy worked incorrectly in Generation I. While it was intended to multiply the user's critical hit ratio by four, it instead divides the critical hit ratio by four. Focus Energy will be removed by switching or Haze. The effect of Focus Energy cannot stack, and it will fail if the user is already under its effect.
In the Generation I handheld games only, Focus Energy divides the user's probability of landing a critical hit by 4; while it was intended to multiply it by 4, the move works incorrectly in these games.

In Stadium, Focus Energy was fixed to increase the user's critical hit ratio with this formula:
(BaseSpeed + 236) / 512
*
In Pokémon Stadium, the probability of landing a critical hit uses a different formula to the handheld games. Using Focus Energy changes the critical hit formula to make the user substantially more likely to land a critical hit (more than twice as likely as not using it, although the exact increase depends on the user's base Speed). This increase is so substantial that in Pokémon Stadium, using a Moves with a high critical-hit ratio while under the effect of Focus Energy always results in the user having the maximum 255/256 (~99.6%) chance of landing a critical hit.

Focus Energy (Japanese: きあいだめ Fighting Spirit Improvement) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation I. It was TR13 in Generation VIII.

Effect

Reason: How this move interacts with Costar?
You can discuss this on the talk page.

Generation I

In the Generation I handheld games only, Focus Energy divides the user's probability of landing a critical hit by 4; while it was intended to multiply it by 4, the move works incorrectly in these games.

This increase is so substantial that in Pokémon Stadium, using a move with a high critical hit ratio while under the effect of Focus Energy always results in the user having the maximum 255/256 (~99.6%) chance of landing a critical hit.

Focus Energy is removed by switching and by Haze. The effect of Focus Energy cannot stack, and it will fail if the user is already under its effect.

Generation II

Focus Energy increases the user's critical hit ratio by one stage. This effect can be transferred by Baton Pass.

Haze no longer affects Focus Energy.

Generation III-V

Focus Energy now increases the user's critical hit ratio by two stages instead of one.

Focus Energy can be used as the first move of a Pokémon Contest combination, causing Arm Thrust, Bone Rush, Brick Break, Cross Chop, Double-Edge, DynamicPunch, Focus Punch, Headbutt, Karate Chop, Mega Kick, Mega Punch, Sky Uppercut, Take Down, and Triple Kick to score double the normal appeal if used in the next turn.

Generation VI onwards

The effect of Focus Energy can be copied by Psych Up or Transform.

Focus Energy can also be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, causing certain moves (Aeroblast, Attack Order, Blaze Kick, Cross Poison, Drill Run, Karate Chop, Leaf Blade, Night Slash, Poison Tail, Psycho Cut, Shadow Claw, Spacial Rend and Stone Edge) to gain extra three appeal points if used in the next turn.

If powered up by a Normalium Z into Z-Focus Energy, the user's accuracy is raised by one stage.

Focus Energy fails if the user is already under the effects of Dragon Cheer.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

The user gains the Focus Energy status condition which raises the user's critical hit ratio. In the Rescue Team and Explorers series, all moves will be a critical hit by increasing the user's critical hit ratio to 999% (unless prevented by Battle Armor, Shell Armor or Lucky Chant), and the status condition lasts for 3-6 turns. From Gates to Infinity, Focus Energy raises the critical hit ratio to 80%, and the condition lasts for 3 turns.
