The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero Part 1: The Teal Mask (Japanese: 碧の仮面 The Turquoise Mask) is the first expansion in The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. It was released on September 13, 2023 at 10 a.m. JST.

It is followed by The Indigo Disk. In order to begin the main story of The Teal Mask, the player must have reached the start of the Treasure Hunt in the main story of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.[1]

Jacq contacts the player, informing them that they, along with three other students, have been chosen to partake in a trip to the the land of Kitakami in the east. Guiding the academy students to this new land is Briar, a teacher from Naranja Academy'sS/Uva Academy'sV sister school in Unova, Blueberry Academy. Introducing herself to the player, Briar reveals that she is a descendant of Heath and posseses an uncensored manuscript of the Scarlet BookS/Violet BookV that he wrote, which mentions a Pokémon called Terapagos, which she hopes to find in order to restore the creditability of Heath's name. However, she is still waiting to obtain permission to enter Area Zero from the Pokémon League.

With all the chosen students gathered, the trip to Kitakami begins. Upon arriving in the foreign land, the player makes their way to Mossui Town and meets Carmine and Kieran, local siblings who are also students at Blueberry Academy, with the former acting aggressively towards foreigners. Once the students have settled down at the local community center, their caretaker tasks them with forming pairs and finding three signboards around Kitakami and reading the tale they describe. At Carmine's suggestion, the player forms a pair with Kieran and visits the first two signboards, which describe the tale of the trio of Pokémon known as the Loyal Three and an ogre they sacrificed their lives fighting against years ago. Unlike his sister, however, Kieran is a fan of the ogre, and takes the player to visit its supposed home, the Dreaded Den, on Oni Mountain.

The player and Kieran choose to leave finding the last signboard until the next day in order to participate in the first day of the yearly celebration known as the Festival of Masks, where the Loyal Three are honored. During the celebration, the player and Carmine have an unexpected encounter with the ogre, Ogerpon, who accidentally drops her Teal Mask. Carmine chooses to keep the encounter a secret from her brother for now. The next day, the player shows the mask to Kieran and Carmine’s grandfather Yukito, who reveals the true story of Ogerpon and the Loyal Three: ages ago, a man arrived in Kitakami with Ogerpon, but they were shunned due to their unusual appearances, forcing them to live on Oni Mountain. Only the village's mask maker pitied them, creating them a set of masks adorned with jewels the man had brought with him, which allowed the man and Ogerpon to hide their faces and take part in the village festival. However, the word of the beautiful masks attracted three greedy Pokémon to Kitakami. They attacked the man and stole three of the four masks he tried to protect. Finding her home in ruins, Ogerpon, full of anger, donned the remaining mask, found the three Pokémon with the masks they had stolen, and defeated them. The townspeople, not understanding what had happened, assumed the three Pokémon had fallen trying to protect them from the violent ogre, and named them the Loyal Three. Ogerpon subsequently returned to the mountain alone and was not seen again.

Carmine is outraged upon finding out that the people of Kitakami have been worshipping evil Pokémon for all this time, but Yukito tells her not to reveal the secret to anyone, as the mask maker, who had known the truth, had been labeled as a heretic for speaking against the Loyal Three in the past. Since the Teal Mask was chipped when it was dropped, the player leaves it for Yukito to be repaired while they visit the last signboard with Kieran, unaware that he had secretly listened to his grandfather's story and is feeling betrayed for having been lied to regarding the player's encounter with Ogerpon. The next day, the player and Carmine visit the Crystal Pool at the summit of Oni Mountain to gather a Crystal Cluster required to fix the Teal Mask. At the summit, the player has a brief encounter with Briar, who reveals that the crystals found there emit energy similar to the Terastal phenomenon, which she hopes to use to make the phenomenon usable outside of Paldea.

Upon returning to Mossui Town, the player and Carmine find out that Kieran has stolen the Teal Mask. Chasing him down to Loyalty Plaza, he accuses the player and Carmine for treating him no better than the townspeople of the past treated Ogerpon, and challenges the player to a battle over the mask. Upon losing, Kieran punches the Loyal Three Monument in rage and returns the Teal Mask before running away. Suddenly, a burst of light erupts from the monument, and the Loyal Three are inexplicably resurrected from their grave. They make their way to Kitakami Hall, where the townspeople, still unaware of the truth, hand the three masks kept there to them and feed them mochi, making them bigger and more powerful. After saving Ogerpon from the Loyal Three, the player and Carmine set out to retrieve the masks, while Kieran stays behind to do something else.

The player and Carmine track down the empowered Loyal Three and defeat them, retrieving Ogerpon's masks one by one. Once they're done, Kieran tells them to come back to Mossui Town, where he's succeeded in convincing the townspeople of Ogerpon and the Loyal Three's true natures, clearing Ogerpon's name. The player, Carmine, and Kieran escort Ogerpon back to her home, where she expresses her desire to come with the player. Kieran suddenly demands that he should get to be Ogerpon's partner instead and challenges the player to a battle over her. After defeating Kieran, the player proceeds to battle Ogerpon with all of her masks and catch her. Distraught, Kieran runs away and locks himself in his room. After one more battle with Carmine, the player is informed that Briar, Carmine, and Kieran are heading back to Blueberry Academy early due to a development involving the Great Crater of Paldea, though Carmine invites the player to come and see them again later. Back at Blueberry Academy, Kieran continues obsessing over getting strong enough to defeat the player and starts preparing for their next battle.

Kitakami natives Carmine and her little brother Kieran are introduced along with their grandparents Yukito and Hideko.[2] Blueberry Academy teacher Briar[3] and Photographer Perrin appear as well.[4] A couple named Billy and O'Nare are also introduced in the expansion.

Pokémon

New Pokémon and forms

The Legendary Pokémon Ogerpon debuts in The Teal Mask. It has four forms, Teal Mask, Wellspring Mask, Hearthflame Mask, and Cornerstone Mask, with each form having a special Tera form when terastalized.[5] A Legendary trio called the Loyal Three[6], consisting of Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti, are introduced. An evolution of Applin called Dipplin debuts as well.[7] Another Pokémon revealed is Poltchageist.[8][9] It evolves into Sinistcha. While both heavily resemble Sinistea and Polteageist, they are an entirely different species. Poltchageist has two forms, Counterfeit Form and Artisan Form. Sinistcha shares the same pattern with its pre-evolution, having two forms, Unremarkable Form and Masterpiece Form. A new form of Ursaluna called Bloodmoon Ursaluna debuts as well.

New activities

Timeless Woods

A side quest in Kitakami involves the player working together with Perrin in the Timeless Woods, an area in Kitakami where people rarely visit. The main goal is to help Perrin look for a mysterious Pokémon, revealed to be Bloodmoon Ursaluna. The player will take snapshots of Pokémon living in the forest while searching for the mysterious Pokémon.[4] The side quest is unlocked after capturing 150 Pokémon in the Kitakami Pokédex and speaking to Perrin.

Ogre Oustin’

Ogre Oustin' is a minigame the player can participate in, which involves the player collecting Berries by popping Ogre Balloons while riding KoraidonS/MiraidonV and bringing them back to the Berry Tables for points. Up to three other players can join either online or via local play. Some tasks players can focus on are collecting far-away Berries or driving away greedy Pokémon seeking to eat the collected berries. The reward for finishing the minigame is Mochi.[10] Clearing all three difficulty levels of Ogre Oustin' grants the player a Shiny Munchlax as a reward.

Mass outbreak events

Limited-time mass outbreak events differ from a normal mass outbreak, in which the same species of a Pokémon will appear in multiple mass outbreaks for a limited time as part of an online event. Pokémon in these outbreaks will have a higher chance of having a Mark without the added effects of a Sandwich. The first Mass Outbreak Event announced featured Clefairy, which ran from September 29 to October 1, 2023 in both Paldea and Kitakami.[11]

Kitakami Ogre Clan

Kitakami Ogre Clan members are eight Trainers that specialize in a type or a specific battle style. As the name suggests, members are exclusively found across Kitakami and are significantly more challenging compared to other Trainer classes in the game. The player will need to defeat seven members to be able to challenge the eighth member. The first seven will have four Pokémon each, two of which will have a held item. The eighth Trainer will award the player with items commonly used for competitive battling, an item for each member defeated, and will also battle the player with a team of five, three of which will have a held item.

Moves

Several new moves have been introduced for The Teal Mask.

Several moves have returned as TMs. New TM Materials were also made available that can be obtained from new Pokémon found in Kitakami.

With the return of several moves as TMs, few existing Pokémon received additions to their move pool, these additions can also be obtained through breeding.

While some Pokémon can no longer learn moves that were previously available for them.

Also, the move Grassy Glide had its base power reduced from 70 to 55.

Abilities

The Loyal Three Pokémon share a new signature Ability called Toxic Chain.[12] Dipplin debuts its signature Ability Supersweet Syrup[7], while Poltchageist and its evolution Sinistcha have the new signature Ability Hospitality.[9] Bloodmoon Ursaluna is revealed to have the signature Ability Mind's Eye. When Ogerpon Terastallizes, its Ability, in any mask, becomes Embody Aspect, a new signature Ability exclusive to Ogerpon's unique Terastallized states.

Additionally, two existing Pokémon had one of their Abilities changed.

  • Eight new hairstyles can be accessed in Paldea after obtaining the Teal Style Card.
  • The Jinbei outfit is introduced for The Teal Mask, which comes in four different color variants.
    • Jinbei cannot be purchased and is obtained during the story of The Teal Mask.
  • New clothing items and eyewear can be purchased in Paldea after obtaining the Teal Style Card.
  • Six wearable masks can be purchased from the Mask Vendor in Kitakami Hall.
  • 12 new Rotom Phone cases are made available.
  • The upper and lower border of the player's Bag menu can be set to the Kitakami theme or the default Paldea theme by speaking to the receptionist at the Community Center in Mossui Town.
  • Pressing R or L while viewing the map will switch between the Paldea map and Kitakami map.
  • New emotes are introduced: three camera emotes and six overworld poses.
  • The field camera can now be adjusted in the Options menu while exploring the open world. The distance to the player character can be set to close, normal, or far.
  • While taking selfies, players can change their facial expression and pose, making it easier to combine emotes and expressions to set unique shots.
  • Background music can now be played while taking photos or selfies. The player's Pokémon that are out of their Poké Balls and other characters react to the music.
  • Photographs can now be directly taken using the A button and automatically saved to the player's Nintendo Switch album.
    • Photographs taken during Union Circle sessions can also be shared with members of the group.[10]
  • Players can now filter for moves learnable by Pokémon in their party when using the TM Machine.

Trivia

The poster outside of the Treasure Eatery
  • Outside of the Treasure Eatery in Medali, a poster containing silhouettes of the Pokémon Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti can be seen, which hinted at this expansion.
  • Version 2.0.1 has a glitch where the game only registers 300 battles, preventing the player's victory against additional Trainers from being recorded.[14]
