Outside of battle

In certain games, Rock Smash requires a specific badge to use outside of battle; the Marsh BadgeFRLG, Zephyr BadgeHGSS, Dynamo BadgeRSEORAS, or Coal BadgeDPPtBDSP.

Generations II and III

Rock Smash can be used to break breakable rocks to clear a path. Occasionally, breaking a rock will cause a wild Pokémon to be encountered.

Generation IV

Diamond, Pearl and Platinum

Rock Smash can be used to break breakable rocks, but no wild Pokémon will appear.

HeartGold and SoulSilver

Rock Smash can be used to break breakable rocks, and wild Pokémon or items can be found. Items that can be found include Heart Scales, shards, and Fossils.

Generation V

Boulders in Clay Tunnel

Rock Smash is no longer a field move.

In Black 2 and White 2, if a Pokémon in the player's party knows the move Rock Smash when they talk to one of the Workers in Clay Tunnel, they can help clear a section of boulders.

Generation VI

Rock Smash can be used to break breakable rocks and certain cracked walls. Wild Pokémon and items can be found when breaking rocks (but not cracked walls).

Generation VII

Rock Smash can no longer be used outside of battle.

Generation VIII

Rock Smash is a field move in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, usable via the Poketch's Hidden Moves app, which summons a wild Bidoof to use the move.

Generation IX

Rock Smash can no longer be used outside of battle.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

In the Rescue Team, Explorers and Adventure Squad series, Rock Smash is a non-damaging move which turns a wall tile in front of the user into a floor tile, even if there is a Pokémon inside it. It is incapable of destroying walls used for locked chambers as well as those at the edge of a floor, nor can it be used diagonally. The move was unaffected by Taunt prior to the Explorers series.

From Gates to Infinity onwards, Rock Smash is now a damaging move that may lower target's Defense. It retains its ability to remove wall tiles.

Rock Smash in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Rock Smash is Charizard's Side Special move. Unlike in the Pokémon games, Charizard will create a boulder and crush it with its head, producing multiple fragments of debris that fly off for extra damage. Rock Smash has high damage and knockback and can potentially KO a foe at low damage.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, Rock Smash has been made Charizard's Down Special move, with Flare Blitz taking its former position. It was weakened greatly, but now also grants armor to protect Charizard from incoming attacks.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Rock Smash was removed from Charizard's moveset in favor of Pokémon Change, as Charizard has been reincorporated back into the Pokémon Trainer character.

Trivia

  • Rock Smash is the only HM move that does not share its type with another HM move, past or present.
  • Rock Smash is the only move to be a TM, become an HM, revert to being a TM again, and then revert to an HM.
  • Rock Smash and Rock Climb are the only moves that have the word rock in their name, but are not Rock-type.
    • Coincidentally, both have been HM moves at some point.
  • Although Rock Smash is a Fighting-type move, it uses the Rock-type TM icon in the Generation V games.
  • Although Rock Smash is described as a "punch", it is not empowered by the Ability Iron Fist.
