Heatran (Japanese: ヒードラン Heatran) is a dual-type Fire/Steel Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Heatran on a wall

Heatran is a reddish-brown, quadrupedal Pokémon. It is dotted with orange and gray spots, and it has metal bangles locked on its legs. Its four claws on each of its feet are in a cross formation. Heatran has a gray underside, and its face is covered by an iron mask, with red-orange eyes uncovered. Its eyes seem to remain open even when it is asleep. Whenever it is seen with its mouth open, an orange glow emanates from inside it. Boiling magma-like blood circulates through its body. While its body is rugged steel, certain parts of it are partially melted, due to Heatran's own intense body heat.

Heatran is a fierce guardian. Without the power of the Magma Stone, Heatran would rampage and cause the volcanic crater where it dwells to erupt. Heatran's claws allow it to dig deep into walls, and its feet allow it to stick to a surface, so it can hang and climb from walls and ceilings. According to legends, Heatran was said to have been created from the magma hidden beneath Mount Coronet. The body of Heatran is said to hold many unsolved mysteries. Heatran has the ability to form a shield around itself in order to protect itself from harm.

Heatran is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Magma Storm.

Heatran in the anime

Major appearances

Heatran (recurring)

In The Arceus Chronicles (Part 1), Saturn caught a Heatran to be used in Team Galactic's plan to bring back Cyrus, using it and a Flame Plate to power an energy cannon. However, in The Arceus Chronicles (Part 2), Saturn accidentally overloaded the cannon, causing it to backfire and send Heatran on a rampage when its Flash Fire Ability overloaded, melting its Dusk Ball and escaping. Its rampage was eventually stopped in The Arceus Chronicles (Part 4).

Heatran's known moves are Stone Edge and Magma Storm, and its Ability is Flash Fire.

Other

Heatran debuted in Arceus and the Jewel of Life, under the ownership of Marcus. It was a powerful opponent, but it was eventually freed by Pikachu after it chose to no longer fight for Marcus's cause.

Heatran made its main series debut in Pokémon Ranger: Heatran Rescue!. It was being followed by Ben, who was on a mission to capture it and protect it from a collapsing mountain.

In the Hoopa's Surprise Ring Adventures short Heated Battle, a Heatran was summoned by Hoopa alongside a Slugma, Rapidash, and Magmortar. They all used Fire-type attacks to set Ash and Pikachu on fire.

Minor appearances

In An Old Family Blend!, a Trainer's Heatran was seen entering the Lily of the Valley Conference. This made it the first Legendary Pokémon to be entered by a Trainer in a formal competition.

A Heatran appeared in the opening sequence of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

Pokédex entries

Pokémon Generations

In The Magma Stone, a Heatran was awakened by Charon and subsequently began rampaging inside of Stark Mountain, but was calmed by Buck and resealed when he returned the Magma Stone to its original resting place on a stone altar.

In the manga

Movie adaptations

Heatran appeared in the manga adaptation of Arceus and the Jewel of Life as one of the Pokémon under Marcus's control, along with Bronzong. Marcus used Heatran in an attempt to kill Arceus, Damos, Ash, and his friends.

Phantom Thief Pokémon 7

Heatran is one of the Pokémon a Team Galactic Grunt used while attacking Sun Sun in A World Covered In Darkness. It was bested by Hiori's Lucario.

Pokémon Adventures

In Pokémon Adventures, Heatran is referred to as the "Lord of Stark Mountain." It first appeared in Clobbering Claydol, where Buck sought to protect it from Team Galactic by taking the Magma Stone with him. However, him doing this caused Heatran to be unsealed, allowing Charon to catch it for his own use. Throughout the Platinum arc, Charon used Heatran in his battles against Sinnoh's other Legendary Pokémon, until he was finally defeated at the end of the chapter. Following Charon's arrest, Buck agreed to take Heatran back to Stark Mountain.

A Heatran appeared as a silhouette in a fantasy in Unplugging Rotom (Heat, Wash, Mow, Fan, Frost).

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure!

Heatran appeared in A Clash! Hareta vs. Charon. When Charon raided Stark Mountain, he disturbed the Magma Stone and awakened Heatran, leaving Hareta to battle it until the Magma Stone was restored to its proper place.

Trivia

  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Heatran.
  • In the Japanese version of Pokémon X and Y, two women in Jaune Plaza mimic the sounds of Pokémon. One mimics the sound of a Heatran, while the other compliments her. However, this is mistranslated in the English version to say that there is a Lava Dome Pokémon in Jaune Plaza.
  • Heatran is the only Pokémon introduced before Hidden Abilities that cannot be obtained with its Hidden Ability in any game without an Ability Patch.

Origin

Heatran may be based on volcanic remains. Its Steel typing may reference how the Earth's inner core is made of solid metal under immense pressure. It may be also based on a personification of magma. In the ancient mythologies of most cultures, the eruptions of volcanoes were explained by the presence of a fire monster living within it, often a dragon.
