Slugma (Japanese: マグマッグ Magmag) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.
It evolves into Magcargo at level 38.
Biology
Physiology
Slugma are fiery Pokémon that appear to consist entirely out of magma. They appear to resemble slugs, with a pair of bright yellow eyes on short stalks and a small mouth. The magma inside its body acts as a circulatory system, transferring vital nutrients and oxygen throughout their bodies. These Pokémon have to constantly keep moving to keep the magma in a liquid state - if it cooled the magma would harden and turn to rock.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Slugma have been documented to have two abilities: Magma Armor, which prevents this Pokémon from being frozen solid, or Flame Body, which give its opponents a 30% chance of being burned when coming in physical contact with Slugma. Flame Body has also been used in later generations to help hatch Pokémon eggs that trainers have in their party.
Behavior
Slugma have to keep moving in order to keep warm; if they stopped moving, the magma would cool and become rock, which would eventually break off and reduce this Pokémon's size. For this reason they never sleep. Although they aren't rock-type Pokémon, Slugma are capable of learning Rock Throw, AncientPower and Rock Slide Naturally. However, they will be a Rock Pokémon in a following evolutionary stage.
Habitat
Naturally, Slugma prefer warmer regions where they can keep their magma hot, so they are often found in volcanic regions.
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food
It is not known what these Pokémon eat, presumably they consume soil and rocks to both keep the volume of their magma and collect vital nutrients for their bodies.
In the anime
Flannery had two Slugma named Mag and Meg, one of which evolved to Magcargo in Poetry Commotion!.
In the manga
Pokémon Special
A trio of Slugma first appeared in Template:PSV. Professor Oak tried to capture them at the beginning of the volume, but failed. The Slugma later appeared outside Earl's Pokémon Academy at Violet City where they were captured by Crys.
Mack uses his Slugma to create illusions by generating waves of distorted air via heat, forcing targets to relive their worst memories.
